What is a Vape

A vape is a device used to inhale vapor, typically containing

nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. It is part of a
category of products called electronic cigarettes (e-
cigarettes), and is often used as an alternative to traditional
smoking. The device works by heating a liquid (often referred
to as "e-liquid" or "vape juice") that usually contains nicotine,
propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavorings. When
the liquid is heated, it turns into vapor, which is then inhaled
by the user.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN THE
MENTAL HEALTH
1. Nicotine Addiction
Nicotine is a highly addictive substance, and many vapes contain nicotine.
Regular use of nicotine can lead to dependence, which can affect mental
well-being in various ways:
Mood Swings and Irritability: When a person is addicted to nicotine, their
mood can fluctuate based on nicotine levels in their system. As nicotine
levels drop, withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and
depression may occur.
Increased Anxiety and Stress: While nicotine can provide a temporary
feeling of relaxation, over time, it can increase feelings of anxiety and
stress. This is because nicotine stimulates the release of dopamine, but
prolonged use can disrupt the brain's natural balance, leading to
heightened anxiety when not using it.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN THE
MENTAL HEALTH

2. Cognitive Effects
Nicotine can have detrimental effects on brain development, particularly in
adolescents and young adults, whose brains are still developing:
Impaired Memory and Learning: Studies have shown that nicotine can
affect areas of the brain responsible for memory and learning,
potentially leading to difficulties in concentration, memory retention, and
decision-making.
Decreased Attention and Impulsivity: Nicotine use can impair attention
and increase impulsive behavior, making it harder to focus and regulate
behavior in certain situations.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN THE
MENTAL HEALTH
3. Increased Risk of Mental Health Disorders
Nicotine addiction from vaping can be linked to an increased risk of various
mental health disorders:
Depression: There is evidence to suggest that nicotine can contribute to
depressive symptoms, particularly in individuals with a predisposition to
mood disorders. Nicotine may alter neurotransmitter function, such as
serotonin and dopamine, which play key roles in mood regulation.
Anxiety: While some individuals may vape to manage anxiety, the
opposite effect may occur in the long run. Nicotine addiction can
worsen anxiety disorders, leading to cycles of temporary relief followed
by increased anxiety.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN THE
MENTAL HEALTH
4. Social and Psychological Effects
Vaping can also have social and psychological implications:
Social Isolation: Nicotine addiction can lead to social isolation as users
may feel the need to vape in private or may spend excessive amounts
of time using their device, potentially straining relationships with family,
friends, and coworkers.
Escalating Habit: People may find themselves using vaping as a coping
mechanism for stress, boredom, or negative emotions. Over time, this
can become a psychological crutch, making it more difficult to manage
emotions without relying on the vape.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN THE
MENTAL HEALTH

5. Sleep Disruption
Nicotine is a stimulant, and using it, especially close to bedtime, can disrupt
sleep patterns:
Difficulty Falling Asleep: Nicotine may interfere with the ability to fall
asleep and stay asleep, leading to poor sleep quality and daytime
fatigue.
Sleep Disturbances: Chronic use of nicotine may result in longer-term
sleep disturbances, affecting mental clarity and emotional regulation.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH
1. Respiratory Issues
Lung Irritation: Inhaling the vapor from e-cigarettes can irritate the airways,
leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. The chemicals in the
vape liquid, such as propylene glycol and glycerin, can cause inflammation in the
lungs.
Popcorn Lung (Bronchiolitis Obliterans): This rare and severe lung condition is
associated with exposure to diacetyl, a chemical sometimes used to create
buttery flavors in e-liquids. While the FDA has banned diacetyl in food products,
it is not always regulated in vaping products. It can cause scarring of the small
airways in the lungs, leading to a persistent cough and difficulty breathing.
Increased Risk of Respiratory Infections: Vaping can weaken the immune system
in the lungs, making them more susceptible to infections such as pneumonia and
bronchitis.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH

2. Cardiovascular Effects
Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: Nicotine is a stimulant that can increase heart
rate and blood pressure. This puts extra strain on the cardiovascular system and
can raise the risk of developing heart disease over time.
Increased Risk of Heart Disease: Research suggests that long-term nicotine use,
such as through vaping, can damage the blood vessels, increasing the risk of
cardiovascular issues like heart attacks and stroke. Nicotine promotes the release
of chemicals that contribute to the narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis).
Blood Clotting: Nicotine can also increase the risk of blood clotting, which can
lead to dangerous conditions like heart attacks or strokes, especially in
individuals with existing cardiovascular risk factors.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH

3. Damage to Oral Health

Gum Disease: The nicotine and other chemicals in vape liquids can lead to gum
inflammation, dryness, and an increased risk of gum disease (gingivitis). This can
cause bleeding gums, bad breath, and tooth loss if left untreated.
Tooth Decay: Some studies have shown that vaping can lead to dry mouth,
which reduces the mouth's ability to wash away bacteria and food particles. This
increases the likelihood of tooth decay and cavities.
Mouth and Throat Irritation: Vaping can cause irritation in the mouth, throat, and
gums. This can result in discomfort, a sore throat, and an increased risk of
infections in the oral cavity.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH

4. Chemical Exposure
Toxic Chemicals: E-liquids contain various chemicals, some of which are harmful
when inhaled. These include formaldehyde, acrolein, and acetaldehyde—
chemicals known to be toxic and carcinogenic. Heating the liquid in the vape
can release these harmful substances into the lungs.
Metals from Heating Coils: Vaping devices often use metal coils to heat the
liquid. In some cases, these coils can release metals such as lead, chromium, and
nickel into the vapor, which can be inhaled and pose long-term health risks,
including organ damage and cancer.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH

5. Increased Risk of Cancer

Carcinogenic Chemicals: Some studies have found that vaping can expose users
to carcinogenic substances, particularly from flavoring chemicals (like diacetyl)
and metals from the coils. Although the levels may be lower than those in
traditional cigarette smoke, they still pose a cancer risk over time.
Lung Cancer: Though not all studies have shown conclusive evidence, there is
concern that long-term exposure to the toxic chemicals in e-cigarette vapor
could contribute to the development of lung cancer, especially if combined with
other lifestyle risk factors like smoking.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH

6. Addiction and Behavioral Health Effects

Nicotine Addiction: The most significant physical risk of vaping is nicotine
addiction. Nicotine dependence can lead to cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and
an increased likelihood of using higher doses over time. This can perpetuate the
cycle of vaping, making it harder to quit.
Negative Impact on Development: For adolescents and young adults, nicotine
use can have more severe consequences, as the brain is still developing. Vaping
can interfere with brain function, memory, attention, and mood regulation,
potentially leading to long-term developmental issues
NEGATIVE EFFECTS IN
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH

8. Explosions and Injuries

Battery Explosions: There have been incidents of vape pen batteries
overheating and exploding, causing burns, lacerations, and other serious
injuries. Though rare, these accidents can be extremely dangerous.
WHY CAN IT BE DANGEROUS RECEIVING
SUBSTANCES FROM OTHE PEOPLE
1. Lack of Quality Control and Contamination
Unknown Ingredients: When substances are obtained from
unregulated sources, there's no guarantee of their contents. The
substance could contain harmful ingredients, contaminants, or even
toxic chemicals that may not be listed or disclosed. For example, in
cases of illicit drugs, substances might be cut with dangerous
additives that increase the risk of harm.
Contamination: Substances can be contaminated during production,
packaging, or distribution. This could lead to the introduction of
bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens that pose health risks when
consumed.
WHY CAN IT BE DANGEROUS RECEIVING
SUBSTANCES FROM OTHE PEOPLE
2. Risk of Overdose
Unknown Dosage: When substances like medications or recreational
drugs are obtained from others, there's no way to be sure of the
dosage or concentration. This can lead to accidental overdose,
especially with substances that have narrow safety margins (like
opioids or alcohol). Even a small difference in dosage can cause
serious health consequences, including poisoning or death.
Unpredictable Potency: Substances from unregulated or illicit sources
may have varying potencies, meaning the effects of a single dose can
vary dramatically. This increases the risk of overconsumption, adverse
reactions, or overdose.
WHY CAN IT BE DANGEROUS RECEIVING
SUBSTANCES FROM OTHE PEOPLE
3. Potential for Harmful Interactions
Drug Interactions: If someone is already taking prescription
medications, combining them with substances from others (such as
illicit drugs, alcohol, or even supplements) can lead to harmful
interactions. Some combinations can cause life-threatening reactions,
such as respiratory failure, heart attacks, or organ damage.
Synergistic Effects: Certain substances, like alcohol and drugs, can
amplify each other's effects, leading to an unexpectedly high level of
intoxication or impairment. This can increase the risk of accidents,
injuries, and severe health complications.
WHY CAN IT BE DANGEROUS RECEIVING
SUBSTANCES FROM OTHE PEOPLE
4. Addiction and Dependence
Substance Abuse: Receiving substances from others, especially if they
are addictive (such as opioids, nicotine, or alcohol), can increase the
risk of developing dependence or addiction. What may start as a
one-time or occasional use can quickly escalate into regular use,
leading to physical and psychological addiction, which can be difficult
to overcome and harmful to health.
Inability to Control Intake: When substances are shared or provided by
others, users may have less control over how much they consume,
making it harder to gauge when to stop or limit use.
LEGAL CONSEQUENCES
Underage Vaping
Age Restrictions: In many countries and states, there are strict age restrictions on the
sale and use of e-cigarettes and vaping products. For example, in the United States,
the minimum age for purchasing and using vaping products is 21 (as of 2020). In
many countries, the legal age is 18 or higher.
Penalties for Minors: If a minor is caught vaping or possessing vaping products, they
may face consequences such as fines, mandatory counseling, or community service.
Some places may even have legal consequences like probation or restrictions on future
access to vaping products.
Selling to Minors: It is illegal for adults to sell vaping products to minors. Retailers or
individuals who violate this law can face fines, suspension of business licenses, or
criminal charges, depending on the jurisdiction.
GROUP REFLECTION

As 14-year-olds, we deeply regret vaping at school. We thought it was cool and something
to fit in with, but now we realize how foolish and irresponsible it was. We didn’t understand
the health risks or how our actions affected those around us, especially at school where we
should be focused on learning.
Vaping at school was disrespectful to our teachers, peers, and ourselves. We regret not
having the courage to say "no" when pressured by others. Looking back, we see that true
strength is in making the right choices, even if it's hard.
We are sorry for setting a bad example and hope others learn from our mistakes. Vaping
isn’t worth it, and we’re committed to making better decisions from now on.
THANKS FOR PAYING
ATTENTYION, AND WE ARE
DEEPLY SORRY FOR OUR
