Practice 02. Delgadillo Celis

The document outlines a simulation practice for a one-stop-shop student service system, detailing calculations for probabilities and average times related to student arrivals and service. It includes a block diagram for simulations conducted over one and eight hours, along with steps for building the model and an analysis of results. The practice emphasizes the importance of simulation in decision-making for industrial systems, enhancing understanding of object interactions in FlexSim.

Objective: Consider a one-stop-shop for student service where 15 students arrive per hour
and the service rate is 20 students per hour.

Calculate the following elements:

Probability that there are no students in the system.

𝜆 15
𝑃𝑜 = 1 − =1− = 0.25
𝜇 20

Average number of students (units) in the waiting line.

𝜆2 152
𝐿𝑞 = = = 2.25
𝜇(𝜇 − 𝜆) 20(20 − 15)

Average number of students (units) in the system.

𝜆 15
𝐿𝑠 = = =3
(𝜇 − 𝜆) (20 − 15)

Average time each student (the unit) passes on the waiting line.
𝐿𝑞 2.25
𝑇𝑞 = = = 0.15
𝜆 15

Average time a student (unit) stays in the system.

𝐿𝑠 3
𝑇𝑠 = = = 0.2
𝜆 15

Probability that an arriving student (unit) has to wait for service.

𝜆 15
𝑃= = = 0.75
𝜇 20

Probability that the system has 7 students (units).

𝜆 𝑛 15 7
𝑃𝑛 = ( ) 𝑃𝑜 = ( ) (0.25) = 0.03337
𝜇 20
Objetive: Model the above case with the help of flexsim. Simulate first for one hour. Then,
simulate 8 hours.

1) Block diagram of the simulated system.

Simulation 1 hour.

Simulation 8 hours.
2) Describe the steps to build it.

Origin: It is the beginning of the production of the product towards the line.
Queues: These are the waiting lines that represent shipments to operations or processes.
Process: Oversees the respective product testing.
Outlet: This is the output of the finished product and must meet the specifications
correctly.

3) Analyze results.

By using formulas that describe the steady-state operating characteristics of a single-

channel waiting line, we can obtain accurate probability-based results. However, in a
simulation with Flexsim, for example, if we consider 5 people where the first 2 do not wait
in line to enter, there would only be waiting time for the other 3. However, the calculations
include a waiting time for all, from 1 to 5 people.

4. Conclusions.

This practice allowed us to understand the fundamental concept of how simulation works in
FlexSim. Having created our own model, we gained a clear view of how objects interact in
the program. In addition, we confirm that the simulation of a model developed in FlexSim
facilitates better decision-making in the management of industrial systems focused on
improving their profitability.
