Statement of Purpose

Shruti Niyogi

Concurrent advancements in science, technology, and finance have made it possible to live
beyond common expectations. Surprisingly, though, certain global issues such as hunger,
poverty, and social imbalance are still prevalent. My perception of such disparity amidst apparent
prosperity led me to be captivated by the subject of Economics and its nuances.

As a student, I understand that perspectives are not linear but exist in multitudes and are often
intersectional. While in the initial phases of my junior high, scientific concepts intrigued me, I
took a greater interest in Economics in my 12th standard. I attribute my shift in affinities to the
greatly interdisciplinary nature of the subject, which draws equally from the analytical world of
Science and the creativity offered by the Humanities. The technicalities of the realm of
Commerce also have their fair share. It is, therefore, a domain in its own right, which touches
upon all areas of human cognition, prompting me to delve deeper into more advanced concepts
and their applications by means of a Master’s degree in Economics. By pursuing the program, I
intend to understand the means to bring about social parity through a structured pursuit of
finance and microfinance.

As I joined my undergraduate program, I learned about concepts related to Microeconomics,

Macroeconomics, Mathematical Methods for Economics, and Econometrics, among others. My
research-based internship at Generation Finance, TATA Power allowed me to learn the
procedures and challenges of operating a large-scale power production unit. I was also
introduced to the different financial strategies employed to generate revenue and make the billing
process efficient. I spent a month learning the operational details, and at present, I will be
analyzing it in my research paper with purposive sampling, quantitative analysis, and hypothesis
testing.

Currently, while in my senior year, I have the opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge to
real-world applications through courses like Industrial and International Economics. This is
enabling me to apply economic principles to solve real-world problems. I find this extremely
enjoyable since Economics is not just a subject to me, but a tool for understanding and shaping
the world around me.
Moreover, I am working on my seminar paper, which involves understanding the extent to which
high interest rates in India's microfinance sector impact financial inclusion efforts for
low-income groups and the strategies that these groups employ to access financial services while
managing the associated costs. These activities have further strengthened my interest in
Economics as a subject and made me confident about pursuing higher education in this field.

I am particularly drawn to the Graduate School of Arts and Science at NYU due to its
distinguished faculty, interdisciplinary curriculum, and location at the heart of one of the world’s
most dynamic economic hubs. The Master’s program in Economics at NYU offers a rigorous and
comprehensive approach to economic analysis, with a strong focus on quantitative methods and
policy applications. This aligns perfectly with my academic interests and career aspirations. In
particular, the program’s emphasis on advanced econometrics and applied research resonates
strongly with my goal of using economic tools to address global challenges, including financial
inclusion and equitable growth.

Furthermore, the opportunity to learn from esteemed professors at NYU and engage in research
initiatives addressing contemporary economic issues excites me. The program’s emphasis on
fostering critical thinking and practical problem-solving will equip me with the skills necessary
to make meaningful contributions to the field of Economics. I am particularly inspired by NYU’s
global perspective and commitment to leveraging academic research for social impact, which
aligns closely with my own aspirations of advancing economic policies that foster sustainable
development and financial equity.

Looking ahead, I see Economics playing a crucial role in shaping policy responses to pressing
issues such as the impacts of artificial intelligence on labor markets and the need for more
resilient global supply chains. Soon after completing my Master’s degree, I wish to pursue a
career focused on economic policy analysis and sustainable development, specifically within the
context of financial inclusion and poverty alleviation. I aim to work in international
organizations where I can contribute to policy frameworks that address global economic
disparities and enhance access to financial services for underserved communities. Ultimately, my
goal is to use the knowledge and skills gained through the Master’s program at NYU to promote
inclusive economic growth, particularly in developing regions like India. By applying economic
theories to real-world challenges and developing solutions that balance innovation with social
equity, I hope to make a lasting impact on the global economy and contribute to a more just and
prosperous world.
