For an Effective Interview
Seung Won is a director in a human resources department for one of the biggest corporations
in Korea. We asked his advice for job applicants in the interview stage of the hiring process.
How should the job applicant speak?
It is the most important to be confident, but modest. This is a difficult balance that can only be
acquired through practice every day life. The interviewer can easily detect a lack of confidence.
Moderate use of gestures is effective. They grasp the interviewer's attention as well as make you
more persuasive. However, continuous and exaggerate hand movements can have a negative
effect. Also unnecessary body movements such as nervously bouncing one's leg can reveal a
lack of confidence. Smile throughout the interview, but be careful not to look different or
condescending. Don't speak too fast. It is natural to speak faster when under pressure, so try to
speak slower than usual at an interview. Humor can be helpful in lightening the atmosphere of
the interview, but there is the risk of the interview losing focus.
In the interview, what qualities are you looking for?
An interview's main purpose is not to determine who is nicer smarter or more hardworking. It is
a process to find a person who will suit the company, be loyal and give one hundred percent.
Through the interview, companies try to judge whether the applicant has the qualities the
company needs, and has seriously considered and understood what having a job mean (has the
right attitude)
Quality
For potential recruits just out of university, applicants are not expected to have job skills and
even if they do, the job skills acquired during university life is not the same as those needed in
the actual workplace. Academic excellence and positive attitudes towards learning are what
recruiters look for. Academic excellence means having curiosity and the mental capacity to
satisfy that curiosity.
Attitude
35 In the workplace, you must sacrifice your personal time as you are now part of a team and
must move according to the team's schedule. You are investing your youth in order to become a
future CEO and like all investments, the rewards are not guaranteed. Endless effort and passion
40is what it takes to make the investment worthwhile. To be aware of this rather difficult life
can prevent failure, as nearly half of new recruits change jobs within three years. This why the
recruiter looks for someone who will adjust well to the working environment and not just for
someone with outstanding accomplishments.
45 What kind of answers of common interview questions are not effective?
The internet has allowed the sharing of answers to interview questions and model self-
introductions are also circulating on the internet. Recruit teams of companies are aware of this
50and are monitoring the main online communities. "Model" interview answers from these
communities are easily caught and have a negative impact on the applicant's interview result, as
it shows a lack of creativity as well as honesty.
What kinds of answers are likely to impress you?
55Personally, as the director of human resources, I pay more attention to the body language of
the interviewee, not to the answers. The interviewee cannot give his or her best answer under
so much pressure and focusing too much on spoken details will interfere with the evaluation of
his 60character. Thus, I am more impressed by posture, eye contact, and how interviewee
answers a question.
What are some of the most common mistakes that job applicants make in interviews?
With so much pressure, interviewees make many mistakes even as they are just walking into the
room. They either bow too many times or none at all, or sit before being asked. The waiting
room is being monitoring by interviewers. This is where the interviewees are at their natural
state. Observations made while the interviewee is waiting have a big influence on the overall
interview. Also, when moving from one waiting room to another or from the waiting room to
the interview, monitors are observing the way the interviewee walks and the way he interacts
with others along the way. Thus, it is important to remember that informal areas outside of the
interview room are also part of the interview.
75 What kind of English language skills do you look for in interviews?
For students applying for jobs in Korea, scores for the TOEIC or TOEFL are required to
determine English proficiency. Although I don't think these tests objectively evaluate English
skills, a score of 850 or above does show the applicant's preparation. Students should study
80business English and spoken English not to get into a company, but also to do well after they
get in.
Q1/ decide if the sentence is true (T) or false (F). Then write the correct information if the

7. If you work hard and sacrifice your free time for the company, you have an excellent

Time out! The instant replay debate
In every sporting event, officials will inevitably make poor calls on the field which result
in unfair outcomes. American football has addressed this issue by allowing coaches to challenge
questionable calls by referees using instant replay technology. Many football fans were initially
opposed to this intervention; but several years after its implementation, it has become an
accepted part of the game. With the relative success of instant replays in American football,
more and more people call for it to be used in other sporting events, particularly World Cup
soccer. In games where the outcomes are too often determined solely by a single referee call (or
non-call), to many it seems logical that this technology should be used to avoid the tragedy of
blown calls. However, other fan argue that soccer and American football are different sports,
and what works for one may not work for the other. Soccer is a game that permits few breaks,
and even occasional stops for instant replays may disrupt the flow of play.
