There are three Types of Sentences viz. Simple, Compound, and Complex.
➢ Simple Sentences : A simple sentence contains only one independent clause. It
expresses a complete thought and has a subject and a predicate.
For Example : The bird flew across the sky.
Alice and Bob went to the market.

➢ Compound Sentences : A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses

joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon. Each
clause can stand alone as a complete sentence.
For Example : I wanted to buy a new phone, but I didn’t have enough money.
The sun was shining brightly, and the birds were singing.

➢ Complex Sentences : A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least
one dependent (subordinate) clause. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a
complete sentence and is connected to the independent clause with subordinating
conjunctions (because, although, since, if, when, while, unless, etc.).
For Example : We stayed inside because it was raining heavily.
If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
Although she was tired, she continued working on her project.
A Quick Recap:
• Simple Sentence = One independent clause.
• Compound Sentence = Two or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction or
semicolon.
• Complex Sentence = One independent clause + one or more dependent clauses.
