ACTIVITY 1

BIOCHEMICAL FUNCTIONS OF CELL

Objectives:

1. To label and describe the different organelles of the animal cell

2. To determine the metabolic processes occurring in each organelle
3. To describe the structure and components of the cellular membrane

Discussion:

Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. The human body is composed of
trillions of cells. They provide structure for the body, take in nutrients from food, convert those
nutrients into energy, and carry out specialized functions. Cells also contain the body’s hereditary
material and can make copies of them. Eukaryotes and prokaryotes are two kinds of cells.

Eukaryotes are bigger than prokaryotes. They are so complex that group of cells are
organized together in tissues which perform a similar function like bone, muscle and nervous
tissue. Several tissues are arranged together to form an organ which performs a particular function
like the stomach where initial digestion of food takes place. In spite of the diversity in cell
characteristics, there are a number of structural metabolic features that are common to all cells.

Living cells may contain various organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, golgi
apparatus, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and protein filaments. Each organelle has specific
metabolic functions. Most cells can be classified according to size and complexity; as prokaryote
and eukaryote. The eukaryotic cell contains a well-formed nucleus, whereas the prokaryotic cells
is devoid of a nucleus. The only structural feature that both cells have in common is a membrane
which completely encloses the cytoplasm and separates the cell from the external environment and
its neighbor cells.

Organelles are the components of the cell that synthesize new materials, recycle old
materials, transport molecules, and anything else that is essential to ensure the proper survival of
the cell and its propagation. Organelles incorporate all broad ranges of organic molecules including
nucleic acids, amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids to produce a viable cell.
