Greetings! As Mayor of Philadelphia - the most historic city in the United States - I want to encourage you to consider my great city for your degree. As a life-long Philadelphia resident and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, I can speak first-hand to the opportunities that an education in Philadelphia brings to college and graduate students. Theres no question that the United States has the greatest university system in the world, and with Philadelphias more than 100 universities and colleges, we offer you unlimited choices to build your career and your life. India is the worlds largest democracy and I want you to know that Philadelphia was where American democracy began. The city was founded in 1682 on the concept of freedom of religion, and is where American independence was proclaimed in 1776, and the U.S. Constitution adopted in 1787. The values that founded my country are why the United States has such a great university system - including emphasis on questioning ideas and on evaluating people on the quality of their work. I invite you to come for your education, to explore Americas great city, and to make it your own. Discover your favorite neighborhoods, cafes and restaurants, cultural venues and parks. Volunteer at one of our many outstanding neighborhood organizations or nonprofits and make a difference. Intern at a regional employer or with a local start-up and jump start your own career. There's much ahead of you and so much to take advantage of! I do hope you choose Philadelphia for your education, and I look forward to personally greeting you at the annual International Student Reception that's held every October to welcome Philadelphia's many international students. Sincerely
oure invited to Philadelphia for your American education! To appreciate what we can offer you, let me tell you a little about Philadelphia and its history
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, who arrived from England on his ship, The Welcome and welcomed is how we want you to feel, too. Philadelphia is the most historic city in America and is where the United States began. It is where we declared our separation from England in 1776 and where the U.S. Constitution was written and ratified in 1787. For ten years it was the Capital of the United States as Washington, D.C. was being built. When you visit and walk through Old Philadelphia you will see that its a city of Benjamin Franklins ideas, a city of important architecture, a city of firsts, and the city of William Penns vision. William Penn the son of a wealthy British navy admiral came to Philadelphia in 1682 for religious freedom. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. (They were called Quakers because they felt that people should tremble at the name of God.) Quakers also believed in the essential goodness of each person, and in equality and freedom to worship as one pleased. These were radical and dangerous ideas for the time, and they landed Penn in jail in England many times. Penn later created a refuge in Pennsylvania for the Quakers and for all oppressed people, and it became known as the only place in the world where all faiths could worship freely. In 1701 Penn created the Charter of Privileges which gave Pennsylvanians the same rights and privileges he was jailed for in England. The Charters democratic principles were an inspiration for the U.S. Constitution, and his legacy of toleration still protects religious freedom with the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Perhaps Penns legacy is within Indias Constitution, too. Another famous Philadelphian, Benjamin Franklin, came to Philadelphia from Boston when he was 17. Franklin left Boston because he heard that there was more freedom in Philadelphia than anywhere else. He brought his creativity to Philadelphia and was responsible for having the streets paved, starting the first lending library, inventing the lightning rod, starting a fire insurance company, introducing the first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, and two universities the University of Pennsylvania and Franklin and Marshall. And he did much more. Today, Philadelphia is the only modern American city where you can find 18th century British-style townhouses among high-rise apartments and condominiums. You can also find neighborhoods of lush country estates and rows of historic mansions all within city limits. It has endless restaurants of every cuisine, the worlds greatest orchestra, the largest outdoor art collection in the world, and the largest number of Impressionist artworks outside of Paris. Philadelphia is also well known as a major center for medical research with four schools of medicine, 12 teaching hospitals, and schools of dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, optometry and podiatry. There were no limits to achievement in Philadelphias past and that remains true today. By choosing one of Philadelphias 102 great colleges or universities, you can also be where creativity, independence and dreams are valued and rewarded. Philadelphia is the most welcoming city in the U.S., and I look forward to personally welcoming you soon!

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America's most notorious criminals, including bank robber "Slick Willie" Sutton and Al Capone. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone's Cell, and Death Row. A critically acclaimed series of artist installations is free with admission. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is located at 22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue, just five blocks from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
