Reading Project: "Design Your Own City"

Task Overview:

Students will search and read an informative text about (1) a guide on urban planning, (b)
famous cities, or (3) sustainable cities and then complete a project that applies the knowledge
they gained. The goal is to design their own fictional city based on the principles and facts they
learned from the reading.

Project Steps:

1. Reading Assignment:
o Students, working in a group of three, search and read a text about urban
planning, sustainable cities, or the design of famous cities.
o Key points to focus on could include city infrastructure, transportation, green
spaces, cultural attractions, and sustainability.
2. Project Guidelines:
o City Concept: Students will design their own fictional city. They need to
incorporate key elements from the reading (e.g., public transportation, green
spaces, sustainability).
o Map: They can either draw or use a digital tool to create a map of their city.
o City Features: Students should include descriptions of their city’s features, such
as:
 Infrastructure (roads, transportation systems, etc.)
 Landmarks or cultural attractions
 Environmental features (parks, rivers, green initiatives)
 A brief description of the city's history and culture
o Presentation: Students will present their city to the class, explaining how they
used the information from the reading to create their design. They should
highlight key decisions and how their city reflects the ideas from the text.
3. Final Product:
o Students will submit their project, including:
 A city map
 A written description of their city
 A presentation (either oral or digital) that outlines their design process and
how it aligns with the reading.
