❝ TIME AND DISTANCE ❞

Rule 1. Distance = Speed × Time

Speed = Distance/Time , Time = Distance/Speed
1 m/s = 18/5 km/h, 1 km/h = 5/18 m/s
Rule 2. If a man travels different distances d1,d2,d3, and so on with different
speed s1,s2,s3.respectively
then, Average Speed = (d1+d2+d3+.....) / {( d1 / s1 ) + ( d2 / s2) + (d3 / s3 )+..}
Rule 3. If a man travels different distance d1,d2,d3,...and so on in different time
t1,t2,t3, respectively then, Average speed = (total travelled distance)/(total time
taken in traveling distance)
Rule 4. If a distance is divided into n equal parts each traveled with different
speed then,
Average speed = n/(1/s1+1/s2+1/s3+1/s4) Where n = number of equal parts
s1,s2,s3,........sn are equal.
Rule 5. If a bus travels from A to B with the speed x km/h and returns from B to A
with the speed, y km/h, then the average speed will be (2xy/x+y)
Rule 6. If d1 distance is travelled in t1 time and d2 distance is travelled in
t2 time then,
d1t2 = d2t1 or (d1/t1 = d2/t2)
⇒ Distance ∝ time [provided speed is constant]
Rule 7. If an object increases/decreases its speed from x km/hr to y km/hr. to
cover a distance in t2 hours in place of t1 hours then [Here (t2 – t1) will be
given].
Distance = {xy/(Difference of x and y )} × (Change in time)
Rule 8. If an object travels a certain distance with the speed of A/B of its
original speed and reaches its destination ' t' hours before or after then the
taken time by an object traveling at original speed is.
Time = {A/(Difference of A and B )} × time in (hours)
Rule 9. Speed (s) ∝ 1/time(t) ⇒ s ∝ 1/t
∴ s1t1 = s2t2 (Provided distance in constant)
Rule 10. If a man travels at the speed of s1, he reaches his destination t1 late
while he reaches t2 before when he travels at s2 speed then, the distance between
the two-place is D = {(S1 × S2) (t1 × t2 )}/(s2-s1)
Rule 11. If both objects run in the opposite direction then, Relative speed = Sum
of speed.
If both objects run in the same direction then, Relative speed = Difference of
speeds.
Time taking in meeting = (Distance between them)/(Relative Speed)
Rule 13. Let a man take ‘t’ hours to travel ‘x’ km. If he travels some distance on
foot with the speed u km/h and remaining distance by cycle with the speed v km/h,
then the time is taken to travel on foot.
Time = (vt-x)/(v-u)
Distance traveled on foot = Time × u
Rule 14. Formula to calculate the no. of rounds.
Circular Distance = (circumference) × No. of rounds,
D = 2πr × n
Rule 15. If anyone overtakes or follower another, then the time is taken to catch
= distance between them/(Relative Speed)
or meet = {(Speed of 1st traveler) × time}/(Difference of speeds)
Total traveled distance to catch the thief
= {(Product of speed) × time}/(Difference of speeds)
Rule 16. Formula to calculate the no. of poles,
Distance = (n - 1) x
where n = No. of poles
x = distance between consecutive two poles.
Rule 17. If in a certain time, ‘d1’ distance is traveled with ‘s1’ speed and d2
distance is traveled with ‘s2’ speed then,
d1/s1 = d2/s2
Rule 18. If a man covers 1/x part of Journey at u km/h, 1/y part at v km/h, and
1/z part at w km/hr and so on, then his average speed for the whole journey will
be 1/{( 1 / xu ) + ( 1 / yv ) + ( 1 / zw ) +...........}
