ESTIMATION-OF-PARAMETERS

The document discusses the estimation of population parameters, defining key terms such as estimation, point estimator, interval estimator, and margin of error. It provides examples of calculating sample proportions and confidence intervals using survey data from Filipino students and graduating high school students. Additionally, it outlines a method for assessing the proportion of students who can pursue college based on survey results.

ESTIMATION OF PARAMETER

ESTIMATION OF PARAMETER TERMINOLOGIES AND ASSUMPTIONS

Estimation- Is the process of determining parameter values
Estimate- Is a value or a range of values that approximate a parameter.
It is based on sample statistics computed from sample data.
Point Estimator - It is a rule or formula that describes an estimate. It is used to estimate a
population parameter and does not provide information as to how close the estimate is to the
population parameter.
Interval Estimator - It is a range of values that is likely to contain the true value of the
parameter.
An interval estimate is associated with the degree of confidence.
The degree of confidence (alpha) is a measure to determine if the population parameter is
within the interval. It is the probability that the population parameter is within the confidence
interval, usually expressed in percentage value.
Critical Value - It is a factor used to compute the margin of error to determine the interval
estimate of the population parameter.
Margin of Error- It is used to estimate a population in the probability, 1-α.

Estimating a population parameter

In this section, we shall consider estimating and determining the sample size by applying
proportion instead of using the means.
To solve the sample proportion, we shall use the formula:
P(hat)= x/N
Where P(hat) is the sample proportion
x= is the sample size
N= is the total population
Example:
1. Suppose a survey is made to determine the proportion of Filipino students of age 12-16
years old favoring face to face classes. Assume that 7,500 were surveyed and 4,350 students
favored the face to face classes.
Solution:
p(hat)=x/N
p(hat) = 4350/7500
p(hat) = 0.58 or 58%

Hence, 58% is the proportion of Filipino students of age 12-16 years old favor face to face
classes.
The sample proportion p(hat) is the best point estimate of the population proportion.

2. Suppose 650 graduating high school students from region IV-A were randomly selected and
surveyed. It was found out that 420 students can pursue college next year.
a. Find the point estimate of proportion of high school students who can pursue
college next year.
b. Find the interval estimate of proportion at 95% level of confidence of high school
students who can pursue college next year
Solution:
For a,
find the point estimate of p(hat)
𝑥
P(hat)=𝑛
420
P(hat)= 650

P(hat)= 0.373 or 37.5 %

For b,
find the interval estimate (we should find first the Margin of Error)
The interval estimate requires that we should find first E
P(hat)= 0.375

q(hat)=1-P(hat)
q(hat)=1-0.375
q(hat)= 0.625
𝛼
Z 2 =1.96
𝛼 𝑷(𝒉𝒂𝒕) 𝑿 𝒒(𝒉𝒂𝒕)
E= Z 2 . 𝒏
(0.375)(0.625)
E=1.96 650

E= 1.96 X 0.0190
E=0.037
Therefore, the interval estimate is P=0.375±0.037

ASSESSMENT
Four hundred graduating high school students from Marikina City were randomly selected and
surveyed. It was found out that 250 students can pursue college next year.
a. Find the point estimate of proportion of all high school students who can pursue college
next year.
b. Find the interval estimate of proportion at 95% level of confidence of all high school
students who can pursue college in the succeeding year.
