A MOVIE CHALLENGE
We asked a movie fan, Jenny, to watch
every movie playing at her local theater for
a month. Let’s find out what she thought.

Movie Magic Why did you want to do our movie challenge?

Jenny I love movies! I usually go to the movie theater once or
twice a week. And I’m happy to watch anything on the big
screen. I sometimes just decide when I get to the theater.

Movie Magic What movies did you watch for us?

Jenny I watched everything at my local movie theater! I
went five times a week. I saw romcoms, action movies, and
animated movies. I also saw a musical and a Bollywood movie
from India. I watched that with subtitles in English. I didn’t see
any horror movies!

Movie Magic Which movie did you enjoy the most?

Jenny The acting in the Bollywood movie was great, but my
favorite was a superhero movie. I love action movies. This one
had good special effects and a great ending!

Movie Magic Did you dislike anything about your experience?

Jenny I stopped buying popcorn because it was really
expensive. Oh, and some people didn’t turn their phones off. I
can’t stand it when a phone rings during a movie!

Reading Understand an article about an unusual school

Do schools need rules?

Imagine a school where students don’t have to go to classes and they
spend all day doing anything they want. Awesome, right? Well, schools
like this really exist. They are called Agora schools, and there are
twelve of them in the Netherlands, in Europe.

At Agora schools, there are no classes or

schedules. Instead, students find something that
interests them and they do a project. For example,
some pupils recently converted a large car into
a camper van. They learned about electricity,
working with wood, design, and many other
things. They had to use math and art skills. And
they worked with anybody in the school who was
interested in the project, from ages 12 to 18.
Agora schools don’t have traditional teachers. They
have coaches who help students find solutions to
problems they have with their project. If a group
needs an expert, the coach encourages them to
find and contact the right person. If a student
wants a desk to work at, the coach tells them to
design and make one.
Agora schools believe that students learn when
they are happy, allowed to play, and find subjects
that really interest them. What do you think?

Riding the New York City Subway

The New York City Subway is the perfect way to get
around. The subway opened in 1904, and today it’s the
busiest subway in the world. For less than $3 a ride,
you can go anywhere in the city. The subway runs every
minute of every day and helps millions of people to get to
one of its 472 stations.
Here are a few things to know about traveling
on the subway:
Paying for your trip
You must always pay for your trip, but you don’t buy a ticket.
You must pay using a contactless card, your smartphone, or
a special MetroCard. You can buy those from machines or
small stores near subway stations.
Subway rules
Once you are in a station, there are some rules you
have to follow.
• You must always let other people off the train before
you get on.
• When you are getting on the train, you mustn’t hold the
doors open for other people because it wastes time.
• You mustn’t put your bags on the seats because other
people might want to sit there.
• If you are wearing a large backpack, you must take
it off and hold it or put it on the floor.
