Deserts are well known for being hot and dry. But in the winter time
and at night, deserts get cold. Deserts have a very small amount of
water in the ground. As temperatures drop, the desert floor gets
cold. Since there’s not much plant or animal life, strong winds blow
across the desert floor. These conditions can lead to thin sheets of ice
forming on a hard desert floor.

Are there any interesting things that happen where you live when
the weather changes?

This happens in the Death Valley Desert National Park in California,

USA. Ice forming in the desert is surprising, but it’s not amazing.
However, 180 kg rocks moving across the desert floor is amazing.

People didn’t know how the rocks moved until very recently. A
scientist named Richard Norris, from the University of California San
Diego, discovered how the rocks moved. Strong winds blow the rocks
along sheets of ice and scrape the desert floor. They leave a trail
behind that are often up to 100 m long.

There are four seasons. When the seasons change, the earth’s surface
changes, too. Some of these changes are easy to see and understand.
For example, in winter it gets cold, and snow falls. But depending on
the environment, other changes are not so easy to understand.
