HAIR PERMING REVIEWER OUTLINE

A. BASIC CONCEPTS OF HAIR PERMING

 Purpose of hair perming (adding waves or curls permanently)
 Chemicals used in perming (perm lotion, neutralizer)
 Types of perming:
o Thermal perming (uses heat)

o Cold wave/acid/alkaline perms

 Exothermic vs. Endothermic process

 Role of neutralizer (locks new hair shape)
B. HAIR STRUCTURE & PROPERTIES
 Porosity: Hair's ability to absorb moisture/chemicals
 Elasticity: Hair’s ability to stretch and return to shape
 Density: Number of hair strands per square inch
 Texture:
o Fine (thinnest strands)

o Medium

o Coarse (most resistant to breakage)

 Signs of hair conditions:

o Highly porous hair = dull, breaks easily

o Low elasticity = breaks easily

o Over-processed = brittle, dry, breaks

C. TOOLS AND MATERIALS

 Perm rods: Used to form curls
 End papers: Protect hair ends
 Barrier cream: Protects skin around the hairline
 Rat tail comb: Sections the hair
 Cotton strip: Prevents solution from dripping
 Styling comb: Used in finishing
 Gloves & apron: Personal protective equipment
 Towel cape: Protects client’s clothing
D. CLIENT PREPARATION & CONSULTATION
 Importance of client consultation (assess condition & expectations)
 Scalp & hair analysis before treatment
 Client must sign an agreement
 Explain full procedure before starting
E. PROCEDURES IN PERMING
1. Preparation
o Wash hair with clarifying shampoo

o Section the hair properly

o Wrap perm rods with end papers

2. Application
o Apply perm solution (based on hair type)

o Wrap cotton around hairline

o Process time depends on hair condition

o Observe S-pattern for proper processing

3. Neutralization
o Rinse hair thoroughly before applying neutralizer

o Rinse again after neutralizing (usually 5 minutes)

4. Styling
o Remove rods only after neutralizing & drying

o Gently style and check final look

F. CURLING PATTERNS & TECHNIQUES

 Single halo: For larger heads
 Zigzag/Crosshatch: For creative styles
 Start rod wrapping at the middle section
 Use even tension when wrapping rods
 Improper rod placement = uneven curls
G. SAFETY, HYGIENE, AND ERGONOMICS
 Store tools in clean, closed containers after sterilization
 Follow ergonomic principles:
o Keep proper posture

o Reduce excessive force

 Take breaks and stretch to avoid fatigue

 Avoid overlapping chemicals on the skin
H. POST-PERM CARE & CLIENT SATISFACTION
 Handle thick/frizzy hair gently
 Use minimal styling products on fine hair
 Confirm final result with client
 Record client feedback and results
 Disinfect all tools and clean the work area
I. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SALON MANAGEMENT
 Proper storage of chemicals (to avoid spoilage or accidents)
 Proper waste disposal (for hygiene and environment)
 Always sanitize tools before serving the next client
