Grade 8 Careers Assignment
Grade 8 Careers Assignment
Interviews
Background
During the week of Nov. 27th -Dec. 1st, the Career Centre staff and Elgin Park PLC’s (Peer Leadership
Council) organized an online Career Fair series, interviewing former Elgin graduates or members of the
wider Elgin community about their profession and the journey they have experienced to get there.
Students at Elgin were able to view the interview live in their classroom and ask questions of the
speaker. It was a great experience to connect with former Elgin students and the community members
that support our career programs.
The great thing about organizing these interviews virtually is that they were recorded and made
available online so students could access all the speakers in case they missed a day or if their class was
unable to participate on a certain day.
Your Task:
Watch at least one career interview in order to reflect on what that person can offer us about a
specific career and general ‘Life’ advice. (Please DO NOT choose the interview with Mark Flynn-
it will not be considered for the assignment. You may watch on your own time to hear his
thoughts on Career Exploration. 😊)
You are more than welcome to watch more than one video. In fact, I encourage it! Watch them
all if you want!! However, for the actual assignment, you only need to focus on one interview.
While you are watching the interview, complete the chart on the next page.
Please download your own copy to fill in as you watch the interview.

Challenges on their career journey What do they like/dislike about their job?
Every projects are different especially in Likes Dislikes
environmental problems due to many laws, Creativity Mathematics(I
and new laws everyday. Socialize disagree)
You also need new designs and move items Brain intensive
or remove items even after done.
Good advice & suggestions from the speaker for students in the process of career
exploration (or just figuring out life in general) Identify and explain at least 2 ideas.
For highschool students, take a summer job. If you absolutely love it, you can get a
diploma. You can also go a generic route, with a bachelor of engineering and grow from
there.
Would you pursue a career in this profession? Why or why not? (3-4 sentences
minimum.)
I wouldn’t because i like the technology side of engineering much more. Mechanical
engineering is mostly structural and architectural combined. I want to perhaps become a
software or hardware engineer. I also suck at communicating so I could sit at the computer
all day, but not get much work done.
Based on what you learned in the presentation, why do you think having a mentor
(someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger
person) is important in the exploration and success of a career pathway? (3-4 sentences
minimum.)
I feel like if you do not have a mentor, you could easily get mislead into a different career
path. It is also great to have someone with experience and knows the subject well to guide
you. They know the struggles and the easier things, the mechanics and the traits/skills you
need.
