02 Moment S1 - 20182019 JTKP

The document outlines Lab 2 of the Statics course at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, focusing on the equilibrium of moments on a two-arm lever. It includes objectives, theoretical tasks, experimental procedures, and analysis requirements for comparing theoretical calculations with experimental results. The lab aims to enhance understanding of lever principles and the relationship between calculated and measured moments.

LAB 2
EQUILIBRIUM OF MOMENTS ON A TWO-ARM LEVER

INTRODUCTION
In this lab work, you must compare the calculated moments (theory) with
measured moments (experiment).

OBJECTIVES
1. To investigate the fundamentals of the equilibrium of moments
2. To prove the action of forces dependent on the lever arm.
3. To compare experimentally obtained results with theoretical calculations.

PART A: THEORETICAL WORK

TASK 1: FIND THE THEORIES

The theory related to this experiment are:
Calculation of equilibrium of moments using the basic principles of the
equilibrium of moments and the lever principles.

TASK 1: Write your related theory here

TASK 2: DRAW THE FREE BODY DIAGRAM

The experiment setup is shown as figure below. The unit consists of a centrally
supported, symmetrical lever and displaceable supported slides with sets of
weights. The lever is supported by a vertical column. A reliable base plate
guarantees its stability. Draw the FBD at point lever in the box below.

TASK 3: DERIVE THE EQUATIONS AND CALCULATE THE LEVER ARMS

1. Based on your FBD above, derive the equation to calculate lever arm c if
the level arm a and level arm b are given in the table
2. Report your data using table below. Start the load F1 and F2 with
10N.Then hang the F3 with 15 N
3. Repeat step 1-2 with different level arm a and level arm b

TASK 3: Derive your equation here

TASK 3: Record your calculations here

PART B: EXPERIMENTAL WORK

TASK 4: FIND THE EQUIPMENTS

Figure 2 Equilibrium of Moments on a Two-Arm Lever.

Slide and weight hanger have a dead-weight force of 1 N each, together 2 N.

For example, the following combination is possible to compose a force of 10 N:
Slide 1N 1x
Weight hanger 1N 1x
Weight 5N 1x
Weight 1N 3x

TASK 5: RUNNING THE EXPERIMENT

1. Place the slide 1 on the left lever arm a = 280mm and suspend weight
hangers with a weight force of F = 10N.
2. Suspend the second slide on the left lever arm b =140 mm with a
weight hanger and a weight force of F = 10N.
3. Shift the third slide with a weight hanger and a weight force of F =15N
onto the right lever arm until the lever is in equilibrium.
4. Measure the lever arm c at the slide.
5. Repeat step 1-4 with different lever arm a and b according to table
6. Record all data and calculate the results.

TASK 7: COMPARE THEORY VALUES WITH EXPERIMENT VALUES

Compare calculated values with the one measured from the experiment.
Calculate the error between both result.

TASK 7: Show your calculation sample of error

TASK 7: Record your error analysis here

PART C: DISCUSSION,ANALYSIS & CONCLUSION

TASK 8: DISCUSSION
1. Your result in TASK 3, TASK 6 and TASK 7. What is the relation between
theory and experiment.
2. What do you experienced from this lab work.
3. Discussion 1 is based on what you get, what you calculate, basically fact
and figures. Asking the questions WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? of your lab
works
4. Discussion 2 is asking the questions WHY? And HOW? of your lab
works. E.g. How do you get the result?, why the graph curve like that?,
why the error small or big?
