1.1 Number Systems and Notation

The document contains practice exercises on linear programming, focusing on various real-world scenarios such as sales commissions, investment in furniture, juice mixing for dietary requirements, airline ticket sales, clothing manufacturing, and calculator production. Each problem requires the application of linear programming techniques to maximize profits or minimize costs while adhering to specific constraints. Solutions must show all steps and simplifications for credit.

1 An appliance salesperson earns a fixed weekly salary of €300, plus a commission of €50 for
each washing machine she sells and €120 for each refrigerator she sells. How many washing
machines and refrigerators must the salesperson sell to make at least €1500 in a week?

2 A furniture dealer deals in only two items: tables and chairs. He has $51,000 to invest and
has storage space for 60 pieces at most. A table costs $2500 and a chair $500. He estimates
that from the sale of one table, he can make a profit of $250 and that from the sale of one
chair a profit of $75. He wants to know how many tables and chairs he should buy, from the
available money, to maximise his total profit, assuming that he can sell all the items which he
buys.

3 A dietician wishes to mix carrot juice and orange juice in such a way that vitamin contents of
the mixture contain at least 8 units of vitamin A and 10 units of vitamin C.
Carrot juice contains 2 units/100 g of vitamin A and 1 unit/100 g of vitamin C. Orange juice
contains 1 unit/100 g of vitamin A and 2 units/100 g of vitamin C.
It costs 50 cents per 100 g to purchase carrot juice and 70 cents per 100 g to purchase
orange juice.
How much carrot juice and how much orange juice should the dietician buy in order to
minimise the cost of such a mixture?

4 An airline offers coach and business-class tickets. For the airline to be profitable, it must sell
a minimum of 40 coach tickets and a minimum of 25 business-class tickets. The company
makes a profit of $225 for each coach ticket and $200 for each business-class ticket. At most,
the plane has a capacity of 150 passengers. How many of each ticket should be sold in order
to maximise profits?

5 A manufacturer produces trousers and sports jackets for department stores. At present, they
have the following material available: 750 m2 of cotton textile and 1000 m2 of polyester.
Every pair of trousers (1 unit) needs 1 m2 of cotton and 2 m2 of polyester. Every jacket
needs 1.5 m2 of cotton and 1 m2 of polyester. The trousers are priced at $50 and each
jacket is priced at $40. How many pairs of trousers and jackets must the manufacturer give
to the stores so that these items obtain maximum sales revenue?

6 A small subcontractor for a calculator company produces scientific and graphing calculators.
Long-term plans show an expected demand of at least 100 scientific and 80 graphing
calculators each day. Because of limitations on production capacity, no more than 200
scientific and 170 graphing calculators can be made daily. To satisfy a shipping contract, a
total of at least 200 calculators must be shipped each day. If each scientific calculator sold
results in a €2 loss, but each graphing calculator produces a €5 profit, how many of each
type should be made daily to maximise net profits?
