UPSC Prelims Strategic Study Plan

Strategic Approach for UPSC Prelims

Exam Pattern:

Paper 1 (GS): 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours. Covers History, Polity, Geography, Economy, Environment, Science,

Current Affairs.

Paper 2 (CSAT): Qualifying (33% or 66 marks). Comprehension, Reasoning, Math.

Negative Marking: -0.66 per wrong answer in Paper 1. Focus on accuracy.

High-Weightage Topics:

- Polity, Economy, Environment, Current Affairs (15-25 questions each)

- History, Geography (10-20 each)

- Science & Tech (5-15)

Time Allocation: 60% static syllabus, 40% current affairs (last 12-18 months). Revise static 2-3x, current affairs monthly.

Practice: Solve 30-50 mock tests. Analyze errors for accuracy.

Modified Study Plan

1. History

Resources: NCERTs (Class 6-12), Tamil Nadu Board books (Class 11-12), Spectrum for Modern India.

Focus: Modern India (High Priority), Ancient & Medieval (Low-Medium Priority). Use timelines, mind maps.

2. Polity

Resources: M. Laxmikanth, NCERT Class 11.

Focus: Constitution, Fundamental Rights/Duties, Parliament, Judiciary, Federalism, etc.

3. Geography

Resources: NCERTs (Class 6-12), GC Leong, Atlas.

Focus: Indian Geography, World Geography, Mapping. Link to current events.

4. Economy

Resources: NCERT Class 11-12, Budget 2025-26, Economic Survey 2024-25.

Focus: Inflation, Banking, Policies, Schemes. Balance theory and news.

5. Environment & Ecology

Resources: Shankar IAS, NCERT Biology, PIB.

Focus: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Protected Areas, Laws.

6. Science & Technology

Resources: NCERT Science (6-10), Newspapers.

Focus: Space, Defence, Biotech, AI, Health. News-oriented.

7. Current Affairs

Resources: The Hindu/Indian Express, Vision/Insights, PIB.

Focus: Schemes, International Relations, Reports, Environment, Economy.

8. CSAT (Paper 2)

Resources: Previous papers, Arihant.

Focus: Comprehension, Reasoning, Math. Practice regularly.

Additional Tips for Higher Marks:

- Revision: Static 2-3x, current affairs monthly.

- Mock Tests: 1-2/week initially, 4-5/week closer to exam.

- Elimination Technique: Use MCQ strategies.

- Time Management: Prioritize high-weightage and weak areas.

- Weakness Focus: Target low-scoring areas via practice.

Daily Study Plan (~8-10 Hours):
