ABSTRACT
The Hand Gesture Controlled Car project utilizes an Arduino-based system to allow the user to
control a car through hand gestures. This project integrates an MPU6050 accelerometer sensor
with an Arduino and communicates wirelessly using Bluetooth technology (HC-05 modules). The
hand-mounted Arduino detects hand movements using the accelerometer, such as tilting in
different directions, and sends the corresponding data to a car-mounted Arduino via Bluetooth.
The car's Arduino receives the gesture data and operates the motors accordingly, enabling the car
to move forward, backward, left, or right based on the user's hand movements. This system
eliminates the need for traditional physical controllers, providing a novel and intuitive way to
control a robotic car.
The hand-mounted device detects gestures like forward, backward, left, right, and stop based on
the orientation of the hand. The Bluetooth modules (HC-05) on both devices communicate
wirelessly, transmitting the gesture information. On the car side, the data is received and processed,
and a motor driver (L298N) controls the motors to move the car.
In addition, the ESP32-CAM module is integrated into the system to add real-time video streaming
capabilities. This camera module allows the user to monitor the car's environment remotely via
Wi-Fi, enhancing the overall functionality and providing a visual feedback system for the user.
The ESP32-CAM can be programmed to stream live video to a smartphone or web browser,
providing an additional layer of control and interaction with the car.

1.1 Introduction
The Hand Gesture Control Robot Car project is a cutting-edge system designed to provide intuitive
control of a robot car using hand gestures. This project integrates the power of Internet of Things
(IoT) with gesture recognition to build an interactive and user-friendly robot control system. The
robot’s movement is determined by the gestures made by the user, which are captured by an
accelerometer and processed by a microcontroller. The data captured is communicated wirelessly,
allowing the user to control the robot from a distance.
This project integrates multiple technologies, including Arduino Uno, NodeMCU, and
Accelerometers, providing a versatile and flexible solution for robot control. By incorporating the
IoT aspect, the system allows for wireless interaction between the user and the robot, which adds
a layer of functionality and accessibility to the control mechanism.
Motivation
The motivation behind this project is to explore the possibilities of controlling robotic systems
using natural and intuitive input methods. Hand gestures provide a more natural interaction,
making the experience of controlling the robot more engaging. Furthermore, the integration of IoT
technology enables the robot to be operated remotely via wireless communication, making it more
adaptable to various environments and use cases.
The combination of gesture recognition and wireless communication opens doors to future
advancements in automation, assistive technology, and remote control systems. By integrating
these technologies, the project not only serves as a proof of concept but also lays the groundwork
for more complex systems.
The Hand Gesture Control Robot Car project is an innovative solution that utilizes gesture
recognition technology to control a robot car in real-time. This system allows users to control the
movement of the car by simply using hand gestures, eliminating the need for traditional input
devices like remote controls or joysticks. Instead of physically interacting with a device, the

user’hand movements are detected and processed by sensors, providing a natural and intuitive

At the heart of this system is an accelerometer, a device capable of detecting acceleration and tilt
in three-dimensional space. This sensor is responsible for capturing the user’s hand gestures, which
are then interpreted by a microcontroller, specifically an Arduino Uno, to control the motors of the
robot. Additionally, the system incorporates NodeMCU, a Wi-Fi-enabled microcontroller that

1. Gesture-Based Control

The primary objective is to design and implement a gesture-based control mechanism for the robot
car. The system will utilize an accelerometer (such as MPU6050 or ADXL335) to detect hand
movements and translate them into actionable commands that control the robot's motion. Hand
gestures, such as tilting forward, backward, left, or right, will be recognized by the accelerometer
and used to direct the robot accordingly. This goal emphasizes ease of interaction, allowing users
to control the robot in a more natural, intuitive way without the need for physical controllers.
An essential feature of the project is the integration of IoT technologies to enable wireless
communication between the robot and a remote user. The NodeMCU, a Wi-Fi-enabled

LITERATURE REVIEW
The Hand Gesture Control Robot Car project draws upon several key concepts and technologies
that have been explored in existing research and development in the fields of gesture recognition,
robotics, and IoT (Internet of Things). This chapter provides a comprehensive review of relevant
literature, identifying the key technologies, methods, and trends that have shaped the design and
development of this project. It highlights existing work in gesture-controlled systems, wireless
communication, and IoT integration in robotics.
• MPU6050: The MPU6050 is a six-axis motion tracking device that combines a 3-axis
accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope. Studies show that it is highly effective for detecting
simple hand gestures such as tilt, shake, and rotation, which can be mapped to directional
commands for robot control.
These accelerometer-based systems typically involve setting thresholds for acceleration changes
that correspond to specific gestures (e.g., a forward tilt for moving the robot forward). The system

then processes the raw data from the accelerometer, translates it into a gesture, and converts that
gesture into a command for the robot.
While vision-based systems offer rich and more complex gesture recognition, they require higher
computational resources and are more sensitive to environmental conditions (lighting, background,
etc.). They are also typically more complex to implement compared to accelerometer-based
solutions, which makes them less suited for low-cost, embedded systems such as the one developed
in this project.
• Noise and interference: Accelerometer data can be noisy, especially if the sensor is subject
to vibrations or erratic movements. Various filtering techniques such as Kalman filters and
low-pass filters are often employed to smooth out this noise[5].

2.2.1 Iot In Robotics
The integration of IoT with robotics opens up a variety of possibilities, from simple remote control
to advanced features such as cloud-based monitoring and data analytics. IoT technologies are
particularly useful in scenarios where long-range control, monitoring, or automation is required.
In many systems, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee are used to communicate with robots, with Wi-Fi
being the most common for long-range communication due to its availability and ease of setup [9].
• Security: Ensuring secure communication between the robot and user is vital. Common
methods involve using encryption (e.g., SSL/TLS) and authentication mechanisms to
protect communication (Madhusree et al., 2020).
• User Interface: Developing intuitive and easy-to-use mobile apps or web dashboards that
interact with IoT-enabled robots. Platforms like Blynk and ThingSpeak are often used to
create these interfaces due to their ease of integration and real-time data streaming
capabilities.

2.3.1 Motor Control Using Arduino
Arduino-based motor control has become a standard for small robot projects. The L298N motor
driver is commonly used in such systems because it can control the direction and speed of motors
based on input signals from the Arduino. The motor driver interfaces between the low-power
microcontroller and the high-power motors, protecting the controller from high currents[12].
• H-Bridge Motor Control: The L298N uses an H-Bridge configuration to control the
motors. The motor’s direction and speed can be controlled by adjusting the PWM signals
sent from the Arduino, making it an efficient way to control robotic movement
(Bastarrachea et al., 2017).
• Speed control: Maintaining smooth movement of the robot requires precise PWM control
to adjust the speed of the motors.
• Direction control: Ensuring that the motors react instantly and accurately to gesture-based
inputs, which requires real-time processing.
• Assistive Technology: Gesture-controlled robots have been explored for use by people

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This system enables a robotic vehicle to be controlled using hand gestures. The transmitter section
detects and processes gestures, converting them into commands, while the receiver section
interprets these commands and controls the vehicle accordingly.

TRANSMITTER SECTION:
The transmitter is responsible for detecting gestures, processing them, and sending commands to
the robotic vehicle. It consists of the following modules:
1. Start Transmitter
When powered on, the transmitter system initializes its components.Ensures all modules, including
the microcontroller (ATmega 32), sensors, and communication modules, are ready.
2. Initialize Arduino
The Arduino microcontroller initializes hardware components and loads necessary libraries for
gesture processing.The system checks sensor connections, verifies power levels, and ensures stable
communication with peripherals.
An LCD display (16x2 or OLED) is used to provide real-time feedback on detected gestures and
system status.

5.Wireless Communication (Bluetooth HC-05)
The HC-05 Bluetooth module enables two-way wireless communication.Operates on a 2.4 GHz

3.2.2Transmitter Module
An RF transmitter module is a small PCB i.e., printed circuit board sub-assembly capable of
transmitting a radio wave and modulating that wave to carry data. Transmitter modules are usually
implemented alongside a micro controller which will provide data to the module which is
transmitted. RF transmitters are usually subject to regulatory requirements which dictate the
maximum allowable transmitter power output, harmonics and band edge requirement. The
transmitter module of the gesture control robot consists of an accelerometer, a microcontroller, and
a wireless communication module. The accelerometer detects hand movements and provides raw
X, Y, and Z-axis values, which are processed by the microcontroller. To ensure accuracy, filtering
techniques such as a Kalman filter or moving average can be applied to remove noise. The

processed data is then mapped to specific gestures, such as tilting forward to move the robot
forward or tilting left to turn left. Once a gesture is recognized, the microcontroller encodes the
corresponding command into a data packet and transmits it wirelessly using modules like
nRF24L01, HC-12, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. To maintain reliable communication, error-checking
mechanisms like CRC or checksum can be implemented.

RF. The ordinary 433 MHz RF modules are used in this project. Arduino microcontroller is used
in this project. These robots are used basically for industrial applications. This is an improved
version of the joy stick control robot which has been designed years ago. Intelligent spy robot
project has been designed for the spying purpose .it is radio controlled and can be operated at a
radial distance of 100m radius. Most probably our army youth need to venture into the enemy area
just to track their activities. Which is often a very risky job and may cost precious life? Such
dangerous job could be done using small spy robot all the developed and advance nations are in
the process of making it, a robot that can fight against enemy. Our robot us just a step towards
similar activity. Heart of our robot is microcontroller, we are using ARDUINO uno, ARDUINO
nano in these two microcontrollers the first microcontroller which acts as a transmitter micro
controller, encodes all the commands to RF transmitter. Then, the RECEIVER Microcontroller is
responsible for executing all the commands from the transmitter through the RF transmitter and it
gives the command to moto driver circuit which drives 4 Nos. of. Motors. Transmission through
RF (Radio frequency) is better than IR (infrared) because of many reasons. Firstly, signals through
RF can travel through larger distances making it suitable for long range applications. Also, while
IR mostly operates in line Of sight mode, RF signals can travel even when there is an obstruction
between transmitter & receiver. Next, RF transmission is more strong and reliable than IR
transmission. RF communication uses a specific frequency unlike IR signals which are affected by
other IR emitting sources. This RF module comprises of an RF Transmitter and an RF Receiver.
The transmitter/receiver (TX/RX) pair operates at a frequency of 433MHz an RF transmitter
receives serial data and transmits it wirelessly through RF through its antenna connected at pin4.
The transmission occurs at the rate of 1Kbps-10Kbps. The transmitted data is received by an RF
receiver operating at the same frequency as that of the transmitter.

3. ESP32-CAM Module : A Wi-Fi-enabled camera module that captures real-time video and

4. L298N Motor Driver : Controls the speed and direction of the motors based on the signals

Arduino. It is considered as the powerful board used in various projects. Arduino developed the
Arduino UNO board. Arduino UNO is based on an ATmega328P microcontroller. It is easy to use
compared to other boards, such as the Arduino Mega board, etc. The board consists of digital and
analog Input/Output pins (I/O), shields, and other circuits. Arduino is an open source platform
based around programmable development boards that can be integrated into a range of simple and
complex projects. The Arduino family consists of different types of development boards, with the
most common being. the Arduino UNO. An Arduino board contains a microcontroller which can
be programmed to sense and control devices in the physical world. The microcontroller is able to
interact with a large variety of components such as LEDs, motors and displays. Because of its

flexibility and sustainability, Arduino has become a popular prototyping development board which
is widely used across the world.
Types of Arduino:
All boards are entirely open-source, allowing users to build them separately and finally adapt them
to their exact needs. Over the years the different types of Arduino boards have been used to build
thousands of projects, from daily objects to compound scientific instruments. Arduino board is an
open-source platform used to make electronics projects. It consists of both a microcontroller and
a part of the software or Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that runs on your PC, used
to write & upload computer code to the physical board. The platform of an Arduino has become
very famous with designers or students just starting out with electronics, and for an excellent cause.
Unlike earlier programmable circuit boards, the Arduino doesn’t require a separate part of
hardware in order to program a new code onto the board you can just use a USB 10 Cable. As well,
the Arduino IDE uses a basic version of C++, making it simpler to learn the program. At last, the
Arduino board offers a typical form factor that breaks out the functions of the microcontroller into
a more available package.
ARDUINO UNO R3 :
Arduino UNO is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328. It has 14 digital input/output
pins 6 analog input pins, a USB Connection, an I2C bus and a reset button .It is an open source
electronic prototyping board which can be programmed easily.
The 14-digital input/output pins can be used as input or output pins by using pin mode(), digital
read() and digital write() functions in arduino programming . Each pin operates at 5V and can
provide or receive a maximum of 40mA current, and has an internal pull-up resistor of 20-50 K

Ohms which are disconnected by default . Out of these 14 pins, some pins have specific
functions as listed below:
Communication using Arduino Board: Arduino can be used to communicate with a computer,
another Arduino board or other micro controllers. The ATmega328P microcontroller provides
UART TTL (5V) serial communication which can be done using digital pin 0 (Rx) and digital pin
1 (TX). An ATmega328 on the board channels this serial communication over USB and appears
as a virtual com port to software on the computer. The Arduino software includes a serial monitor
which allows simple textual data to be sent to and from the Arduino board. The Arduino software
includes a Wire library to simplify use of the I2C bus.

two distinct values: HIGH (1) or LOW (0). You use digital signals where the input or output will
have one of those two values. 20 For example, one way that you might use a digital signal is to
turn an LED on or off
• LED: There is a built-in LED driven by digital pin 13. When the pin is high value, the LED is
on, when the pin is low, it is off.
• VIN: The input voltage to the Arduino/Genuine board when it is using an external power source
(as opposed to 5 volts from the USB connection or other regulated power source). You can supply
voltage through this pin, or, if supplying voltage via the power jack, access it through this pin.
• 5V: This pin outputs a regulated 5V from the regulator on the board. The board can be supplied
with power either from the DC power jack (7 - 20V), the USB connector (5V), or the VIN pin of
the board (7-20V). Supplying voltage via the 5V or 3.3V pins bypasses the regulator, and can
damage the board.

Li-ion batteries are a popular choice of rechargeable battery for use in many applications like
portable electronics, automobiles as well as stationary applications for providing uninterruptable
power supply. State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) are important metrics of a Li-ion
battery that can help in both battery prognostics and diagnostics for ensuring high reliability and
prolonged lifetime .They are recharged using TP4056 Li-Ion Battery charging Module.
One of its key features is the OV2640 camera, capable of capturing images at a resolution of up
to 1600x1200 pixels. Additionally, it includes a microSD card slot, making it easy to store photos
and videos without relying on an external Server.

Jumper wire is simply wires that have connector pins at each end, allowing them to be used to
connect two points to each other without soldering . Jumper wires are typically used with
breadboards and other prototyping tools in order to make it easy to change a circuit as needed.
Jumper wire typically come in three versions; male-to male, male-to-female, female-to-female.
The difference between each is in the end point of the wire. Male ends have a pin protruding and
can plug into things, while female ends do not and are used to plug things into .When connecting
