RULES AND REGULATIONS

a. Spelling Bee – Elementary School ( Category A ; Grade 1 - 3)

A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a


broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. The
aim of this competition is to train the participants in hearing English words,
to spell them correctly, and also to enrich their English vocabulary. The
words will be derived from the Merriam – Webster Dictionary. Words will
be general words, we will try our best to prevent the usage of different
accent word pronunciations, homophones, and homonyms.

COMPETITION SEQUENCES:
The competition consists of 2 (two) rounds:
i. Round 1 (one): Preliminary Round 10 (ten) participants with the
highest score will go to the final round.
ii. Round 2 (two): Final Round
The winners will directly be determined from the results of this round.

SPECIFIC RULES:
1. Participants must be in elementary school (Category A ; grade 1 - 3)
2. Participants are required to use school uniforms.
3. Participants are required to bring their own stationeries.
4. Each participant must do the re-registration and come at least 1 (one)
hour before the competition begins. We do not compromise any
tardiness.
5. The words given are based on the Merriam-Webster dictionary. We will
not give out a word list to the participants.
6. Please be aware that the speller should spell the alphabet/letter that made
up the word, not spell the pronunciation of the alphabet/letter.
e.g: Apple (should be spelled as A-P-P-L-E) NOT (AE-PI-PI-EL-I)
7. The speller must not exceed the time frame given for him or her to start
spelling.
8. In the final round, participants should pronounce the word first, then
spell it, and lastly close with the pronunciation of the word again.
9. Having started to spell a word, a speller may stop and start over,
retracing the spelling from the beginning, but in retracing there can be
NO change of letters or their sequence from those first pronounced. If
letters or their sequence is changed in the respelling, the speller will be
eliminated.
10. If a word has one or more homonyms, the pronouncer will indicate
which word is to be spelled. If the listed word is not properly identified,
either by defining it or using it in a sentence, then any correct spelling of
any homonym of the word will be accepted.
11. Only the committee and the participants are allowed to be in the venue,
for the spectators and supporters may stay and wait outside the venue.
12. Any person or persons should not enter or leave the competition venue
when a participant is performing because it may cause a distraction for
the participant.
13. The committee and judges are in complete control of the competition.
Their decisions are final.

MATCHES ROUND

ROUND 1 (ONE): PRELIMINARY


1. Each participant must write down the right spelling for the words
pronounced by the pronouncer and the participant is not allowed to ask
for the definition of the word.
2. The participants must bring their own stationeries (because the
committee will not be providing any). This is to test the listening and
spelling skills of the participants.
3. There is no reduction point for this round.
4. Each correct answer will be worth 1 (one) point. In total, participants
must write down 10 words to gather 10 points
5. Participants will be given 10 (ten) seconds to write down their answers
for every question. (Committee will use the digital timer in order for
accuracy).
6. There will be different sessions for the preliminary round depending on
the number of participants.
7. ONLY in the First Round of the competition:
a) All the participants will be given a piece of paper.
b) Pronouncer will pronounce all the words from the list; by then, all
the participants are required to fill out the words pronounced by the
pronouncer.
c) All of the words MUST be written in capital letters.
d) The pronouncer will repeat each word twice to give a chance for
participants to hear the given word more than once.
e) The participants may not change their written answers. Erasing or
crossing the answers after the 10 seconds have passed is not allowed.
f) Each of the participants will be scored by the number of their correct
answers.

ROUND 2 (TWO): FINAL


1. All 10 (ten) participants will be asked to spell the words given perfectly
within a 15 (fifteen) seconds time frame.
2. Each participant will draw 5 words from the bowl.
3. Each word will have a total point of 1, so the maximum point will be 5.
4. The top 5 participants will continue to go head-to-head in a lightning round.
5. Lightning round requires the participant to have speed. There will be 10
(ten) words. The participants will raise their hand if they know the word
and must spell it correctly.
6. If they don't spell it correctly, they will receive no points. There is no
deduction.
7. The top 3 scores will determine the winners.
8. Participants are allowed to ask the pronouncer to repeat the given word
one more time and they may ask how the word is used in a sentence.

b. Guessing Picture – Elementary School ( Category A ; Grade 1 - 3)

Guessing Picture is a competition where the participants will be


guessing the picture that is being displayed in English. Guessing the pictures
of public places, objects, and activities will evaluate the general knowledge
of the participants.

COMPETITION SEQUENCES:
The competition consists of 3 (three) rounds:
i. Round 1 (one): Preliminary Round 10 (ten) participants with the
highest score will go to the semi-final round.
ii. Round 2 (two): Semi-final Round 5 (five) participants with the
highest score will go to the final round.
iii. Round 3 (three): Final Round
The winners will directly be determined from the results of this
round.

SPECIFIC RULES:
1. Participants must be in elementary school (Category A ; grade 1 - 3)

8. Any person or persons should not enter or leave the competition venue
when a participant is performing because it may cause a distraction for
the participant.
9. The committee and judges are in complete control of the competition.
Their decisions are final.
MATCHES ROUND
ROUND 1 (ONE): PRELIMINARY
1. Each participant must write down the right word for the picture given by
the committee.

2. The participants must bring their own stationeries (because the


committee will not be providing any).
3. There is no reduction point for this round.
4. Each correct answer will be worth 1 (one) point. In total, participants
must guess and write down 10 (ten) words to gather 10 (ten) points.
5. Participants will be given 20 (twenty) seconds to write down their
answers for every question. (Committee will use the digital timer in
order for accuracy).
6. All the participants will only be given paper.
7. All of the words MUST be written in capital letters.
8. Each of the participants will be scored by the number of their correct
answers.
9. The preliminary round might be done in session based on the number of
participants.
10. Participants with the highest score will move on to the semi-final.

ROUND 2 (TWO): SEMI-FINAL


1. During the contest, each participant will have to guess 10 out of 10
(ten) pictures given by the committee. Each participant will be given
10 (seconds) seconds to think and write each word.
2. Participants who guess all the pictures correctly will get 10 (ten)
points. There will be 5 (five) participants with the highest score that
will proceed to the final round.
3. There is no point reduction.
ROUND 3 (THREE): FINAL
1. All 5 (five) participants will be asked to guess the pictures within a 7
(seven) seconds time frame.
2. There will be 10 questions.
3. The participants must write the answer in a little note paper and flip
it upside down on the table. The participants may not touch the paper
after the 7 seconds have passed.
4. The top 3 highest scores will determine the winners. If a tie breaker
round is needed, then it will be provided.
*These rules apply to all participants of this Guessing Picture Time Trial
competition of EPHOTECH 2024. These rules may not be supplanted or
modified except by the authorized committee. All participants are obligated
to obey the rules.

c. Story Telling – Elementary School ( Category B ; Grade 4 - 6 )

Storytelling is a competition where the participants will be telling a story in


English by acting as the characters in the story and using the equipment suitable
to the story line. The story brought by the participants is related to the theme
provided in the competition. The purpose of this competition is to increase
the creativity and expression of the participants and to train participants’
storytelling abilities.

SPECIFIC RULES
I. PRE-COMPETITION RULES
1. All participants should submit the hard copy of their stories right
before their performance. Regarding Story Text Submission, all
story texts must be submitted in hard copy. The committee does not
accept soft copy forms and does not provide a printing service. The
script will be submitted on the competition day.
2. Story submission should be in a format of 4 copies, using the A4
paper with Times New Roman font in the size of 12 and spacing
1.15, name of the participants and their institution should be
located on the top right corner of the story script.
II. RULES DURING THE COMPETITION
1. Each participant must do the re-registration and come at least 1
(one) hour before the competition begins. We do not compromise
any of the tardiness.
2. Each participant and the supporters must remain silent when
another participant is delivering his/her story unless permitted by
the committee.
3. Every communication device must be silenced or turned off at the
competition venue unless permitted by the committee.
4. Recording devices are allowed within the competition venue.
5. Supporters must not disturb any of the participant’s performances
(e.g.: taking photos with flash is not allowed).
6. The committee will expel supporters who violate any of these rules
in the competition venue.
7. There will be NO roll calls in the competition; the Committee will
cross-check based on the data of presence from the re-registration.
Committee will only call the participants’ names 2 (two) times
right before their turn to perform.
8. The participant who does not show up when their turn to perform
will be called in the third call which will take place after the last
present participant’s performance.
9. Participants who do not come until the third call will be
disqualified under the discretion of the committee.
10. None of the participants is allowed to read any story text or
keynote when delivering the story.
11. Participants may opt to use equipment (properties or costumes), at
their own expense, during the delivery of their performance.
12. Equipment is as follows:
a. Participants are allowed to bring equipment to enhance their
storytelling performance, as long as they take full responsibility for
that equipment, the committee will not be responsible for any loss
or damages to the equipment brought by the participants.
b. Participants’ equipment MUST NOT consist of harmful materials
or objects or cause harm to the judges as well as to the audiences or
committee.
c. Participants’ equipment MUST NOT create clutter or mess to the
venue.
d. Participants’ equipment MUST NOT incur damages to others’
property, including the venue’s property. The result of doing so will
be indemnification from the participant.
e. Failure to do any rules regarding equipment will result in
confiscation of the participant’s equipment for the rest of the
competition or disqualification of the participant under the
discretion of the committee.
f. The committee and judges are in complete control of the
competition. Their decisions are final.

III. RULES WHILE PERFORMING


1. Each participant has a minimum time of 5 (five) minutes and a
maximum time of 7 (seven) minutes to deliver his/her story.
2. The timekeeper will start the time after the participants’ first word
3. There will be a mark at the 3 minutes mark, 5 minutes mark, 6.30
minutes, and 7 minutes mark.
4. There will be no tolerance after the 7 minute mark. The committee will
stop the participant after the 7 minutes mark.
5. All timing starts and ends based on the committee’s watch. Other
settings of time from outside of the committee are invalid. The timing
starts as the participant started to talk.
6. If the participant performs less than 5 minutes or exceeds 7 minutes,
then there will be a 5 points deduction. If it exceeds 8 minutes then there
will be a 10 points deduction.

STORY THEMES
The theme of the story telling competition is Folklore. Participants are free
to develop and repackage the story based on their own creativity
without losing the essence and the core of the original story.
SCORING ASPECTS
1. Matter (55%) Consist of:
● Grammar
● Vocabulary
● Story Interpretation
● Pronunciation

2. Performance (45%) Consist of:


● Interaction (Stage, eye contact, costume, equipment, expressions and
body language
● Intonation
● Punctuality of time

EPHOTECH 2024. These rules may not be supplanted or modified except
by the authorized Committee. All participants are obligated to obey the
rules.

d. News Reading - Elementary School ( Category B ; Grade 4 - 6 )

News Reading is a competition where the participants will simulate


delivering news as professional anchors on television. Participants are going
to deliver the news prepared by the committee as if they were professional
news anchors. The aim is to increase the participants’ abilities in delivering
the news in English professionally and boost the participants’ confidence.

SPECIFIC RULES
1. Only the committee and the participants are allowed to be in the venue, for
the spectators and supporters may stay and wait outside the venue.
2. Any person or persons should not enter or leave the competition venue
when a participant is performing because it may cause a distraction for the
participant.
3. No maximum duration for each participant to perform.
4. If the participant made a mistake during the performance the time will be
kept running, and there is no compromise to start all over again.
5. The script will be given on the performance day and they may choose 1 out of
3 options.
6. Participants will be given a 30 minutes time to prepare for the competition.

- Physical Appearance:
1. Every participant must keep his/her appearance neat and clean;
including hair neatness.
2. Minimal use of cosmetics is allowed for the participants.
3. Any participant who violates the physical appearance rules will be
disqualified.
4. Every participant must wear a formal shirt or their school uniform.
5. Participants are NOT allowed to wear a t-shirt.
6. Every participant may wear a blazer, including a school blazer.
7. Participants are NOT allowed to wear jeans.
8. Every participant is NOT allowed to wear any form of sandals.

SCORING ASPECT
I. Performance (45%) Consist of :

● Attire and neatness
● Expression and eye contact
● Time Management
● Harmony

II. Ability in English (55%) Consist of :


● News Understanding
● Pronunciation

EPHOTECH 2024. These rules may not be supplanted or modified except
by the authorized Committee. All participants are obligated to obey the
rules.
e. Speech – Junior High School

A speech competition is an individual competition where the participants


deliver their own typed speech, based on chosen themes given by the
committee. The aim of this competition is to increase the capabilities of the
participants in delivering a speech, particularly in English, and to increase
their confidence to speak in public. The judging aspects will be mounting to
speech substance, grammar, pronunciation, time management, and delivery
of the speech itself.

ROUND 1 (ONE): PRELIMINARY


1. The competition will be held online through the zoom app.
2. Participants are required to be ready during the competition both in
terms of devices, networks, and conducive places.
3. Participants are required to submit the script on the google form
that has been provided. ( https://forms.gle/FQe6QK7JsgEmzzEj9 )
4. Participants will be selected to qualify for the final round which
will be held offline at SMAN 2 Denpasar.
5. Judging will be carried out by the jury, the jury's decision is
inviolable.

SPECIFIC RULES

delivering their speech. Participants who violate this rule will be given a
warning from the committee.
9. The timekeeper will start the time after the participants’ first word
10. There will be marks at the 3 minutes mark, 4.30 minutes mark, and 5
minutes mark.
11. There will be no tolerance after the 5 minutes mark. The committee will
stop the participant after the 5 minutes mark.

News Reading is a competition where the participants will simulate
delivering news as professional anchors on television. Participants are
going to deliver the news prepared by the committee as if they were
professional news anchors. The aim is to increase the participants’ abilities
in delivering the news in English professionally and boost the participants’
confidence.

A. GENERAL RULES

1. Every participant who has registered MUST re-register themselves and attend
the Technical Meeting (Elementary School) on October 12th 2024 a
representative is acceptable by sending the permission beforehand to the
committee.
2. The names registered on the registration form on the Google Form of
EPHOTECH 2024 will be the names printed on the certificates with the limit
of 20 characters for each name. The committee is not responsible for mistakes
and misspelling made by the participant in the registration form.
3. Every rule must be followed. Disqualification for any participant who violates
the rule will be under the discretion of the committee to decide unilaterally.
4. The certificate can ONLY be taken after the winning announcement by the
participants or the representative. Winning announcement will take place after
the last competition had finished on that current day. The certificate of
participant will be ONLY distributed via email.
5. The prize and the trophy for the winner can ONLY be taken by the winner on
the winning announcement. If the winner cannot be present during the closing
ceremony due to several significant reasons (which are allowed only under the
approval of the committee), the prize and the trophy can be taken by the
representative.
6. Participants are allowed to join more than one competition; however, it
shouldn’t be in the same time. The committee will not grant a request to
perform in the time based on participant’s own interest.

7. Only the committee and the participants are allowed to be in the venue, for
the spectators and supporters may stay and wait outside the venue.
8. Any person or persons should not enter or leave the competition venue when
a participant is performing because it may cause a distraction for the
participant.

C. TECHNICAL MEETING

1. Every participant or representative of Elementary School MUST attend the


Technical Meeting on Saturday, October 12th 2024. There will be an
exception only for those who are not able to come on the re-registration day
by sending their permission for absence to the committee beforehand through
Susan Ataupah (081339575189) or Tirta Ning (08980797442). The
permission for absence must be due to personal urges or reasons of which the
committee found acceptable and it must be done maximum 1 (one) day before
the re- registration day.
2. Every participant or representative should bring the real identity card of the
participants in the Technical Meeting, a copy of it would also be acceptable.
3. The Technical Meeting will be the platform for discussion about the rules to
which the competition will be based upon and the time for drawing the
participant’s number.
4. The committee holds the ultimate control towards deciding whether a rule
needs to be changed or not.
5. For the participant who does not present in the technical meeting, the
committee has the full right and control to draw the number of participants
who are not present.
6. Results of the Technical Meeting are considered accepted and legitimate by
the participants and no objection later will be accepted by the committee.
7. The participant and/or representative who are not able to attend the Technical
Meeting due to personal urges or for any reason will be considered in favor
with all the result of Technical Meeting’s discussion, no objection will be
accepted by the committee.
8. Technical meetings for the SMP and SMA/SMK level will be conducted 30
minutes before the final competition starts if there are any misunderstanding
of the rules of the competition itself.
