The document outlines a set of problems related to the design and analysis of singly-reinforced concrete beams for a course at Saint Joseph College. It includes calculations for maximum steel ratio, steel area, ultimate moment capacity, effective depth, and flexural reinforcements under specified loads and material properties. The problems require applying principles of reinforced concrete design with given parameters and constraints.

DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF SINGLY-REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

I. Problem Solving

1. A reinforced concrete rectangular beam 300 mm wide has an effective depth of 500 mm and is reinforced for
tension only. Assuming f’c = 21 MPa, fy = 345 MPa,
a) Determine the maximum steel ration
b) Determine the maximum steel area required
c) Determine the ultimate moment capacity

2. A fixed ended rectangular beam must support a uniform service dead and live loads of 220 kN/m (including
beam wt.) and 182.6 kN/m respectively. It has a span of 6 m. f’c = 27.6 MPa, fy = 414.7 MPa.
a) Compute the effective depth of the beam using b = 400 mm and 𝜔 = 0.18
b) Compute for the flexural reinforcements at the support.
c) Compute for the flexural reinforcements at the midspan.

3. Design a singly reinforced concrete rectangular beam with a simple span of 6 meters which carries a dead
load of 10.5 kN/m (not including beam weight) and a live load of 16 kN/m. Assuming f’c = 30 MPa and fy
= MPa. Use concrete cover of 35 mm, main tension reinforcement of
16 mm Ø bars, steel ratio is equal to 0.5𝜌𝑚𝑎𝑥 .
