Course Code: XXX

Course Objectives:
The goal of this course is to achieve conceptual understanding and to retain the best traditions of traditional calculus. The
syllabus is designed to provide the basic tools of calculus mainly for the purpose of modelling the engineering problems
mathematically and obtaining solutions. This is a foundation course which mainly deals with topics such as single variable and
multivariable calculus and plays an important role in the understanding of science, engineering, economics and computer
science, among other disciplines.

Prerequisites:
Students must have a back ground of Mathematics in senior secondary level.

Course Contents/Syllabus:

of variables (Cartesian to polar), Applications: areas and volumes, Center of mass and Gravity (constant and
variable densities); Triple integrals (Cartesian), orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, Simple applications
involving cubes, sphere and rectangular parallelepipeds; Scalar line integrals, vector line integrals, scalar
surface integrals, vector surface integrals, Gradient, curl and divergence, Theorems of Green, Gauss and
Stokes.
Course Learning Outcomes:

The objective of this course is to familiarize the prospective engineers with techniques in calculus, multivariate
differentiation and integration. It aims to equip the students with standard concepts and tools at an intermediate to
advanced level that will serve them well towards tackling more advanced level of mathematics and applications that
they would find useful in their disciplines.

The students will learn

Apply differential and integral calculus to study curvature and evaluate improper integrals,

including Beta and Gamma functions.

CLO2 Understand the implications and applications of Rolle’s Theorem in solving engineering problems. BT2

CLO3 Use power series and Fourier series to solve problems in advanced engineering mathematics. BT3

CLO4 BT4
contexts.

CLO5 Evaluate double and triple integrals to compute physical quantities such as area and volume. BT5

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:

1. The course pedagogy will include Four quadrant approach i.e. video lectures, presentations, e-content, discussions
and assessments.
2. All the topics covered in the syllabus will be correlated with its applications in real life situations and also in
other disciplines.
3. In order to inculcate problem solving ability in students’ time to time quiz, viva, home assignments and class
tests will be conducted during the progress of semester.
4. Video lectures and extra sessions for revision will be undertaken.
