CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Social media is used to obtain various information

and is also used to interact with other people. Even

though they are in different regions and even countries,

interactions can still be done by utilizing this

technology. Even the latest news developments, quality

improvements, and business-related dissemination have

been effectively using social media platforms. This

development makes social media one of the most dominant

technology platforms for internet use. Nevertheless, in

some cases, there are negative impacts that arise from

social media use, especially those related to the

interaction between users in it. The millennial

generation, who are the primary target users of this

platform, felt a significant impact. This article aims to

analyze the general impacts of social media use on

millennials regarding social behavior and interactions.

The views of the analysis of this manuscript are seen

from various points of view.

Social media has turned into an essential element of

individuals’ lives including students in today’s world of

communication. Its use is growing significantly more than

ever before especially in the post-pandemic era, marked

by a great revolution happening to the educational

systems. Recent investigations of using social media show

that approximately 3 billion individuals worldwide are

now communicating via social media (Iwamoto and Chun,

2020). This growing population of social media users is

spending more and more time on social network groupings,

as facts and figures show that individuals spend 2 h a

day, on average, on a variety of social media

applications, exchanging pictures and messages, updating

status, tweeting, favoring, and commenting on many

updated socially shared information (Abbott, 2017).

Researchers have begun to investigate the psychological

effects of using social media on students’ lives.

Chukwuere and Chukwuere (2017) maintained that social

media platforms can be considered the most important

source of changing individuals’ mood, because when

someone is passively using a social media platform

seemingly with no special purpose, s/he can finally feel

that his/her mood has changed as a function of the nature

of content overviewed. Therefore, positive and negative

moods can easily be transferred among the population

using social media networks (Chukwuere and Chukwuere,

2017). This may become increasingly important as students

are seen to be using social media platforms more than

before and social networking is becoming an integral

aspect of their lives. As described by Iwamoto and Chun

(2020), when students are affected by social media posts,

especially due to the increasing reliance on social media

use in life, they may be encouraged to begin comparing

themselves to others or develop great unrealistic

expectations of themselves or others, which can have

several affective consequences.

The impact of social media on students is a complex

issue with both positive and negative aspects. While

platforms like Twitter and Facebook can enhance

communication, collaboration, and access to educational

resources, leading to increased engagement and

potentially higher grades (Junco, Heiberger, & Loken,

2011), excessive use often results in distractions and

decreased academic performance (Karpinski & Duberstein,

2009). The constant pressure to maintain an idealized

online persona contributes to anxiety, depression, and

low self-esteem, exacerbated by feelings of loneliness

and social comparison inherent in many platforms.

Furthermore, social media's role in cyberbullying cannot

be ignored, as it significantly impacts victims' mental

health and academic success. Therefore, responsible

social media use, guided by educators and developed

through effective time management skills, is crucial to

harnessing the benefits while mitigating the considerable

risks to students' well-being and academic achievements.

The overall effect is a nuanced interplay between

enhanced learning opportunities and potential detrimental

consequences for mental health and academic performances.

Social media is a platform for public around the World to

discuss their issues and opinions. Before knowing the

actual aspects of social media people must have to know

what does social media mean? Social media is a term used

to describe the interaction between groups or individuals

in which they produce, share, and sometimes exchange

ideas, images, videos and many more over the internet and

in virtual communities. Children are growing up

surrounded by mobile devices and interactive social

networking sites such as Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook,

Orkut which has made the social media a vital aspect of

their life. Social network is transforming the behavior

in which youthful people relate with their parents,

peers, as well as how they make use of technology. The

effects of social networking are twofold.[1] On the

positive side, social networks can act as invaluable

tools for professionals. They achieve this by assisting

young professionals to market their skills and seek

business opportunities. Social networking sites may also

be used to network efficiently. On the negative side, the

internet is laden with a number of risks associated with

online communities. Cyber bullying, which means a type of

harassment that is perpetrated using electronic

technology, is one of the risks. In this paper we cover

every aspect of social media with its positive and

negative effects. Focus is on the particular field like

health, business, education, society and youth. During

this paper we explain how these media will influence the

society in a broad way.

Overcoming social media addiction requires a multi-

faceted approach, addressing both the behavioral and

psychological aspects of the problem.

One effective strategy is to take a digital detox,

completely abstaining from social media for a set period.

This allows individuals to break the cycle of dependence

and regain control over their time and attention. It's

also crucial to set time limits for social media use,

using apps or tools to track and restrict access. By

setting clear boundaries, individuals can prevent

excessive scrolling and prioritize other activities

Developing mindfulness is essential for overcoming social

media addiction. Being aware of triggers that lead to

excessive use, such as boredom, loneliness, or

procrastination, helps individuals make conscious choices

about their online behavior. Recognizing the addictive

nature of social media algorithms and the constant stream

of notifications can help users resist the urge to

constantly check their feeds.

Engaging in alternative activities that provide similar

satisfaction or fulfillment can help break the cycle of

social media dependence. This could include hobbies,

exercise, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing

personal interests. By replacing social media with

meaningful activities, individuals can redirect their

attention and energy towards more fulfilling pursuits.

Social media addiction often stems from underlying

psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, or

loneliness. Addressing these issues through therapy or

counseling can help individuals develop healthier coping

mechanisms and reduce their reliance on social media for

emotional support.

Social media can be a tool for connecting with others,

but it's important to prioritize real-life relationships.

Spending quality time with loved ones, engaging in face-

to-face interactions, and building strong social

connections can help individuals reduce their dependence

on social media for social interaction

Seeking Professional Help because for individuals

struggling with severe social media addiction, seeking

professional help from a therapist or counselor

specializing in addiction can be beneficial. They can

provide personalized guidance, support, and tools to help

individuals overcome their addiction and develop healthy

habits.
