Sentence length and structure are tools that you can use to control pacing, or to link

ideas.
Longer sentences and paragraphs can slow down the pace and slow down the reading
speed. This can be used to build or ease tension. Conversely, short sentences can up
the pace. They can show that something happens abruptly, without you having to use
the word "abrupt". Short paragraphs do the same, and can be used to create emphasis.
Parallel sentence structures can be used to link ideas. Contrasting sentence structures
can be used to make a point stand out.
So, rather than thinking about complex compound sentences for the sake of complex
compound sentences, think, "What effect do I want to have on the reader?" and use
sentences as one of the tools in your kit.
