Maximum Marks: 35 Time Allowed: 1:30 hours.

General Instructions:
(1) There are 18 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
(3) Section A contains ten questions, based of 1 mark each, Section B contains three questions of two
marks each, Section C contains three questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case questions
of five marks each

1. An infinite line of charge has a linear charge density of 10-7 C/m. What will be the magnitude of the
force acting on an alpha particle placed at a distance of 4 cm from the line of charge?

2. The image below shows two examples of electric field lines. Which of the following statements is
true?

A. The electric fields in both I and II arise due to a single positive point charge located somewhere

11. Two equal point charges separated by 1m distance experience a force of 8N. What will be the force
experienced by them, if they are held in water, at the same distance? (given K for water=80)

12. Charges (+q) and (–q) are placed at the points A and B respectively which are a distance 2L apart. C
is the midpoint between A and B. What is the work done in moving a charge +Q along the semicircle
CRD.
13. Consider two hollow concentric spheres, S1 and S2, enclosing charges 2Q and 4Q respectively as
shown in the figure.

(i) Find out the ratio of the electric flux through them.

SECTION-C
14. State Gauss’s law in electrostatics. Derive an expression for the electric field due to an infinitely long
straight uniformly charged wire.

15. (a) An electric dipole is kept first to the left and then to the right of a negatively charged infinite
plane sheet having a uniform surface charge density. The arrows p1 and p2 show the directions of
its electric dipole moment in the two cases. Identify for each case, whether the dipole is in stable or
unstable equilibrium. Justify each answer.

(b) Next, the dipole is kept in a similar way (as shown), near an infinitely long straight wire having
uniform negative linear charge density. Will the dipole be in equilibrium at these two positions?
Justify your answer.

16. Two-point charges + 3q and – 4q are placed at the vertices ‘B’ and ‘C’ of an equilateral triangle ABC
of side ‘a’ as given in the figure. Obtain the expression for

(i) the magnitude and


(ii) the direction of the resultant electric field at the vertex A due to these two charges

17. A hollow cylindrical box of length 1m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a three-
dimensional coordinate system as shown in the figure. The electric field in the region is given
by E→=50xi^ where E is in NC-1 and x is in metres. Find

 Net flux through the cylinder.

18. (a) Derive the expression for the electric potential at any point along the axial line of an electric
dipole.
(b)Two-point charges, q1 = 10 × 10-8C, q2 = -2 × 10-8C are separated by a distance of 60 cm in air.
(i) Find at what distance from the 1st charge, q1 would the electric potential be zero.
(ii) Also calculate the electrostatic potential energy of the system.
