Topic: Computation

Sub-Topic: Decimals – Operations and Applications

Specific Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Convert between fractions and decimals correctly

2. Perform addition and subtraction of decimals accurately.

Content

1. Conversion between Fractions and Decimals

o Convert a fraction to a decimal by division.


Convert a decimal to a fraction by placing it over the correct power of 10 and

simplifying.

Operations with Decimals

Addition of Decimals

To add decimals:

 Write them in column form so that the decimal points are aligned vertically.

 Then add the numbers as you would add whole numbers.

 The decimal point in the sum is directly under the decimal points in the addends.

1. (a) Find the total of 25.09 and 283.47

(b) Evaluate 7.854 + 5.6 + 48.37

Subtraction of Decimals

To subtract decimals:

 Write the subtrahend under the minuend so that the decimal points are aligned vertically.

 Then subtract the numbers as you would subtract whole numbers.


 The decimal point in the difference is directly under the other two decimal points.

Examples

a) Subtract 18.905 from 40.714

b) Take away 57.48 from 109.2

Activities

1. Class Discussion:

o Review prior knowledge on fractions and their relationship with decimals.

o Explain the rules and methods for decimal operations.

2. Teacher Demonstration:

o Solve sample problems on the board.

o Highlight common mistakes and strategies to avoid them.
