The document outlines a series of laboratory assignments for BSCE 4A and 4B students, focusing on the design of various components of welded Howe and riveted Fink trusses using AISC specifications and ASTM A36 steel. Each laboratory has specific design problems, including ceiling joists, purlins, top and bottom chords, and joints, with detailed requirements for material properties and dimensions. Deadlines for each laboratory are specified, with all submissions due by 12 PM on the indicated dates in December 2023.

Laboratory and Problem Set

Problem: Design the ceiling joist of your welded Howe Truss using W Shape AISC Specs and ASTM A36 Steel. Use min d=L/30 where L is the beam, spacing of ceiling joist is equal to 1m. Assume Laterally supported.
Problem: Design the purlins, sag rod and tie rod of your welded howe truss using LC shape with sagrods each third points, there should be purlins on every joint and the spacing of purlins should be controlled by the allowable span of roof covering which is equal to 1.52m use min d=L/30. Use AISC Specifications and allowable bending stress to be Fb=0.6Fy.
Laboratory No. 6 (December 8, 2023, 12PM only) Design of Top Chord
Problem: Design the top chord of your welded howe truss using Channel Section, for the load transmitted by the purlins to the top chord see your laboratory no. 5. Use F b=148.8 MPa. ASTM A36 Steel and AISC Specifications need to be used.
Problem: Design the bottom chord of your welded howe truss using Channel Section,Use F b=148.8 MPa. ASTM A36 Steel and AISC Specifications need to be used. Assume that the load transmitted by the ceiling joist to the bottom chord is distributed uniformly (Since spacing of ceiling joist is 1m) see lab 4.
Problem: Determine the size/thickness of weld and base plate needed on every joint of your welded howe truss. Use A36 steel use AISC Specifications for all assumptions. Use thickness of plate as 10mm adjust accordingly based on your design specifications.
Problem: Design the ceiling joist of your riveted fink truss using W Shape AISC Specs and ASTM A36 Steel. Use min d=L/30 where L is the beam, spacing of ceiling joist is equal to 1m. Assume Laterally supported.
