LABORATORY-ACTIVITY-5-1

The laboratory activity focused on exploring the characteristics of a Zener diode and its application as a voltage regulator. The experiment involved measuring voltage and current across the Zener diode under different conditions, confirming its role in maintaining voltage levels. The findings emphasized the importance of Zener diodes in electronic devices and recommended using digital multimeters for improved accuracy in measurements.

LABORATORY ACTIVITY 5

Zener Diode
Member:

Prado, Carl Gerard C.
Sususco, Nick M.

Objective/s:

1. Explore the characteristics of Zener diode and observe its behavior when
used as voltage regulator.

List of Equipment and Component/s:

• Zener Diode: 5V breakdown voltage

• Resistors: 110 Ω, 220 Ω, and 450 Ω
• DC power supply
• Multimeter
• Multisim

Theory:

Zener diodes are special types of diodes that are designed to operate in the reverse
breakdown region. When the voltage across a Zener diode is greater than the
specified breakdown voltage (𝑉𝑍), the diode conducts and regulates the voltage
across it. As such, Zener diode can be used as voltage regulators.

Procedure:

1. Connect the Zener diode in reverse bias configuration to the DC power

supply.
2. Set the power supply voltage value to a higher value than the Zener
breakdown voltage.
3. Measure the voltage across the Zener diode using a multimeter. This
value should be approximately equal to the breakdown voltage of the
Zener diode.
4. Replace the Zener diode with another one of a different breakdown
voltage and repeat steps 2-3.
5. Connect a series resistor to limit the current flowing through the Zener
diode.
6. Connect a load resistor in parallel to the Zener diode and measure the
voltage across both the Zener diode and load resistor.
7. Measure the current flowing across the Zener diode and the load.
8. The circuit should look like Figure 5.1 below.

Conclusions:
In our activity, we learned that the Zener diode keeps the voltage from going above
its own value if the power supply voltage is higher. And if the power supply voltage
drops below, the overall voltage decreases too. Essentially, the Zener diode acts as
a voltage controller—it manages and limits it. This hands-on experience really
helped us grasp the theory better and see how it all operates in real circuits. It was
eye-opening to see how crucial Zener diodes are in many electronic devices,
confirming their significant role in today's electronics. To ensure accuracy, we used
both manual calculations and Multisim software since there were some differences
between our calculations and the actual experiment results.

Recommendation/s:
We think it's better to go for a digital multimeter over an analog one since it gives
more precise readings for voltage, current, and resistance. Accuracy matters a lot
for trustworthy data, and digital displays prevent reading mistakes that can occur
with analog scales. Also, using an adjustable button voltage on the power supply
instead of fixed ones is a smart choice. It helps us get a better grip on how the
current moves in the circuit and offers a clearer picture of its intended use.
