As for the impression or reflection based on Kapalit ng Katahimikan, a Filipino movie starring Janet Jackson, I
have learned a lot and realized how I am overreacting.
Kara David's Kapalit ng Katahimikan is an emotional documentary that reflects what sexual abuse victims
have to fight through, particularly in Maguindanao, Philippines. The film reveals the pervasive way culture and
society shuts up victims and makes them feel like there is no justice available. Many victims are too shamed or
terrified to speak out, and their families sometimes decide to sort it out of court instead of pursuing legal action.
It also made me think about how unfair life can be for so many individuals; especially young girls who go
through abuse as I know that young girls struggle with chronic abuse they endure.
Perhaps the most unsettling of these is the way tribal councils deal with justice. They prefer to pay up and
settle the issue rather than punish the criminals by sending them to jail — or even forcing the victim to wed the
assailant. A mentally challenged girl was raped and later forced to marry her rapist. This is standard operating
procedure in abuse culture, and it passes the trickle-down message to victims that pain doesn't matter. These
customs have existed for too long and must end if we want victims to receive the justice that they deserve.
In addition, the film touches on the issue of gender inequality, as women and young girls are frequently
mistreated. In many communities, women are seen as weak and are expected to suffer silently. This is a
problem big because it makes abuse possible. The documentary gives its clearest lesson that that the
government and society needs a good step forward to protect women and provide them equal rights. Keep laws
in place to hold abusers accountable and help victims.

This movie made me feel a ton of emotions — angry, sad, frustrated. It is difficult to imagine there are still
places where victims of abuse are silenced or ignored. The stories of the young girls and women in this film
are tragic to hear, yes, but also vital, because they starkly reveal the horrors that hang over our country, as it
relates to people of color and women — and our children. Not only did you absorb this film; this film is one
that will require people to do something about it in order to make sure these things do not continue.
The documentary also challenges old customs that demand that family reputation trump justice. It makes us
question whether those traditions truly benefit the community or simply allow the offenders to continue without
consequences. The notion that victims should remain silent to protect against shame is entirely wrong. There’s
a new vulture in town and it’s culling the herd: humans. Rather, what we need to establish is a culture that
encourages victims to speak up and punish abusers for committing crimes.
The most important lesson we learned from Kapalit ng Katahimikan is not to keep silent about abuse. This is a
message that reminds us that we all have a part to play, to make the world a safer place for all. We have to do
our part whether it's helping put victims to meet onstanding their assailants, raising awareness about violence
against her or being adamant about for better laws. Silence enables abusers, but speaking up grants victims the
justice that is deserved.
Kapalit ng Katahimikan is an important documentary that highlights the harsh realities around abuse and how
society has failed the victims of such heinous acts from them. It challenges us to consider what needs to change
in our laws, our communities and our mindset. The film reminds that justice is paramount and no one should
