LET’S BUILD THE LORD’S HOUSE

Haggai 1:8
INTRODUCTION
a. Background
b. Money is needed for most of the things we do. Sociology says 80%
of our waking day is consumed by money. This is true in the
church as well as in our personal lives.
 Light and fan
 The chairs
 Lord’s Supper bread and wine
 Evangelism
 Benevolence
c. It is wrong to think that church is concern about money. The
denominations understand that the work of the Lord requires
money.
The problem with the denomination is how they are taking HOW they
are taking the money. It is not the idea that they are taking
money.
d. The Bible has a lot to talks about a man’s relation with material
possession. You cannot have a right attitude towards God and a
wrong attitude toward money.
 Matthew 6:19-21,24
e.
DISCUSSION
GOD OWNS EVERYTHING
a. This is where every Christian should start. Failure to understand
this will have effect on your attitude towards material
possession.
 Exodus 19:5
 Deuteronomy 10:14
 Job 41:11
 1 Chronicles 29:11-17
 Psalm 24:1
 Psalm 50:10,12
 Haggai 2:8
 1 Corinthians 10:26
b. If we are not accepting this to be true; then who should? The
Christian, own nothing! We are steward of what God has entrusted
into our hands.
But [Jonathan] I have worked hard for the money. I woke up at
dawn and went to work. 8 hours I was working; 5 days a week; and
I have made this wealth.
 Deuteronomy 8:17-18
 Ecclesiastes 2:24
SACRIFICIAL STEWARDSHIP IS ROOTED IN THE GRACE OF GOD
2 Corinthians 8:1-5
 2 Corinthians 8 arose from the Corinthians failure to follow
through with the promised collection. However, Paul did not start
with the failure of the Corinthians but the example of the
Macedonians.
 Grace is the core of financial obligation because of it
emphasizes God’s heart and action
 Bestowed [Perfect Passive Participle]; The Macedonians has
received the grace of God in the past and still has its effect
today.
 Paul listed 5 characteristic that he wants the Corinthians and us
to learn:
 their generosity as evidence of grace
 their giving in the midst of severe trial
 their liberality
 their eagerness to give voluntarily
 their lives as a testimony
 The Bible know that it will not do any good to give money unless
the member of the church will first give themselves.
1 Chronicles 29:14
Luke 19:8-9
THE ACT OF GIVING BUILDS CHARACTER
 The third principles that the Bible teaches is that THE ACT OF
GIVING BUILDS CHARACTER. Turn with me to 2 Corinthians 8:6-9;
from verse 1-5 Paul has pointed out that sacrificial stewardship
is rooted in the grace of God. In verse 6-9, the Bible invites
us to consider giving as a tool for character formation.
 Verse 7;
Paul encourage the Corinthians, that as they excel in growing in
faith, speech, knowledge, diligence and love. Paul advised the
Corinthians to excel in the grace of giving also. We are growing
in faith- we are doing well; we are growing in speech- we are
doing well; we are growing in knowledge – we have verses in our
head. We know that Acts 20:7 teaches that Lord’s supper is on
every Sunday; we know that the Old Testament is not binding- we
have done well. We are growing in our diligence and love of the
work of God.
Let us grow in the grace of giving.
 Verse 8;
There is a direct correlation between money and the heart.
testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence. Testing
means examining something to prove its worth or authenticity.
[If you tell people that your ring is pure gold; the only way to
ascertain that it is pure gold]. Imagine a Ping-Pong master who
has only played a match against a wall. How can he know whether
he is the best or whether the wall is anything like playing a
real person? The opportunity to be tested is God’s grace for
proving the genuineness of our heart as we give.
 GIVING BUILDS CHARACTER
How?
 Generosity wages war against idolatry. When we share
our prized resources and trust God’s use of them, we
shake loose the grip we are tempted to keep on them.
 Generosity displays trust in God
Generosity is good, but sometimes we can be reluctant
givers, right? Our resources are precious to us,
therefore, we are prone to worrying about them. We
worry about not having enough, wisely distributing, or
who deserves what we have to give. God wants us to be
responsible with our resources, but he does not want us
to worry excessively over them.
 2 Corinthians 9:8,11 ; Philippians 4:19

WILLINGNESS IS GOD’S REQUIREMENT
a. When we say willingness, what do we mean? In Acts 17:10-11, the
Holy Spirit testify about the Berean,” These were more fair-
[a]

minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word

with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find
out whether these things were so.” The word readiness is the same
language.
b. Bauer-Danker defines willingness – exceptional interest in being
of service. Which people reminds you of that- the Macedonians ; 2
Corinthians 8:3-4.
c. The truth is taught both in the Old Testament and New Testament.
Exodus 35
1 Chronicles 29:9
2 Chronicles 29:31
2 Corinthians 8:12
2 Corinthians 9:5-7
1 Timothy 6:18
GIVING IS INTENTIONAL
