PATTERN MAKING
MOTIFS: - it is a single unit of design or major theme in an
artwork especially pattern making, where it is repeated several
times and at regular intervals. it can be formed from natural or
artificial objects, abstracts, geometric, regular or irregular
shapes.
PATTERN: - It is an arrangement of regular and repeated motifs
from nature or the environment in general in such a way that
rhythm is created in colours, tones or texture on a given
surface.
Pattern Making is done in textile design, wallpaper, wrappers,
carpets/tiles, border designs etc.
DESIGN: - An arrangement or composition of some element of
art, motifs and symbols into a unified piece or pattern. When
design elements are well utilized, they help design making
these include: - line, motif, form, colour, texture and space.
In a way, pattern-making is a designing exercise or the end
result of pattern-making is design.
PATTERN MAKING
It is the art of creating designs on paper or any other surface for
various purposes. And pattern should have specific themes or
motifs.
WAYS OF PATTERN MAKING
A. PATTERN MAKING WITH LINES: - Different types of lines can be combined
effectively to form patterns in art. Such lines include structural
lines(vertical, oblique, horizontal etc) and rhythmic lines(scrolls, spirals,
loops, waves etc).
B. PATTERN MAKING WITH SYMBOLS AND SHAPES: - A lot of patterns can be
made from symbols, signs and shapes as motifs. They can be composed of
letters of the alphabet, abstract or regular shapes, and religious symbols
like crosses, masks, stars, moon, sun etc.
Musical instruments, craft objects like the decorated calabash, crown, fan
beads etc.
C. PATTERN MAKING FROM ABSTRACT: - Abstract can also be used for motifs
and it can be obtained from nature and geometric shapes which are based
on human mathematical concepts or ideas.
Materials Needed:
Casting On:
Knit Stitch:
Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle
from front to back. Wrap the yarn around the right needle,
pull the loop through, and slide the old stitch off the left
needle.
Purl Stitch:
The reverse of the knit stitch
Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle
from back to front. Wrap the yarn around the right needle,
pull the loop through, and slide the old stitch off the left
needle.
Binding Off:
Knit the first two stitches. Use the left needle to lift the first
stitch over the second stitch and off the right needle. Knit
another stitch and repeat until only one stitch remains. Cut
the yarn, leaving a tail, and pull it through the last stitch to
secure.
Cast On:
Knit every row using the knit stitch. This creates a garter
stitch pattern, which is great for beginners.
Bind Off:
When your scarf reaches the desired length, bind off the
stitches.
Weave in Ends:
Practice Regularly: The more you practice, the better you will
become.
Use Good Lighting: Ensure you have good lighting to see your
stitches clearly.
WEEK 6 - DESIGN
Construction Design
Design is the creation of a plan for the construction of an
objects. It is the road map or a strategic approach for someone to
achieve a unique expectation.
Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic,
functional and economic dimensions of both the design object
and the design process.
Package
Package is the part of the product that is first seen by the
customer, the buyer and seller. A Package can be defined as a
well-designed planned pack that introduces the product and
protects it from being damage. A well package design sells the
product.
Package design is the planning and fashioning the complete
form and structure of a product’s package. It is the creation of a
graphic design on a container, visible on the outside of a product
that a consumer buys.
In creating a new design, the following aspect of a product’s
package are usually taken into consideration; size and shape,
colour, outside appearance, protection, economy, convenience,
labelling and the packaging material’s effects on the
environment.
Methods of Package Design
Packages are used as a means of advertisement and brand
exposure. Well-designed packages do not get thrown away by
consumers, some save them just for the designs.
1. Create a unique design layout
2. Add images
3. Do not forget the logo
4. Add a slogan or greeting
5. Use the right fronts and colour
6. Prepare an easy-open package
7. Have a simple picture of what is inside the pack.
