Week 13 (1)Lecture -with notes

Chapter 9 of 'Statics and Strength of Materials' discusses the concepts of center of gravity, centroids, and moments of inertia of areas. It covers the moment of inertia of plane areas, the parallel-axis theorem, and the moment of inertia of composite areas, providing formulas and methods for calculation. The chapter concludes with problems for practical application of the concepts presented.

• Parallel-Axis Theorem
• Moment of Inertia of Composite Areas
• Problems

9.7 MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A PLANE AREA

• In the study of the strength of beams & columns,

and statics of fluids, the moment of inertia or
second moment of a plane area is required.
– This numerical value is used to indicate how the
area is distributed around a specified axis.

9.7 MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A PLANE AREA

Consider the plane area shown.

The area is divided into n thin
strips parallel to the x axis of
areas ΔA1 ΔA2 …,ΔAn with
centroidal distances y1, y2 …,yn
from the x axis to the centroid
of the area.
The rectangular moment of
inertia of area ΔA about the x
axis is equal to the product of
the square of the centroidal
distance y and area ΔA.
With n areas, add moments of
inertia for each to find the total
approximate moment of inertia.

9.7 MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A PLANE AREA

• The approximate moment of inertia about the

x axis Ix is given by:

• The approximate moment of inertia about the

y axis Iy is given by:

…where the thin strips of area ΔAi are parallel to the y axis and
xi is the distance from the y axis to the centroid of the area Δai .

If we let the number of areas increase without

limit, we obtain the exact moment of inertia.

9.8 PARALLEL-AXIS THEOREM

• The parallel-axis theorem or transfer formula

gives a relationship between the moment of
inertia with respect to any axis and moment
of inertia with respect to a parallel axis through
the centroid.

9.8 PARALLEL-AXIS THEOREM

Consider the area shown.

• The bb' axis is a

centroidal axis.
• The aa' axis is any
axis parallel to the
centroidal axis.

9.8 PARALLEL-AXIS THEOREM

Therefore: for the centroidal axis, A the total
area, and d the distance between

• Note that the term Ad2 is added when the transfer

is made from the centroidal axis but subtracted
when the transfer is made to the centroidal axis.
– The moment of inertia for the centroidal axis is
always smaller than for any other parallel axis.

9.9 MOMENT OF INERTIA OF COMPOSITE AREAS

• When a composite area can be broken up into

simple areas whose centroid and moment of
inertia with respect to the centroid are known or
can be calculated, the moment of inertia of the
composite area can be determined.

Examples and problems start on textbook page 196.
