A square is a rectangle with equal sides. This means a square has all the properties of a rectangle with an
additional requirement that all the sides have equal length.
The square, like the rectangle, has diagonals of equal length. In a rectangle, there is no requirement for the

Dividing Polynomials by Monomials: Splitting the Terms Method

In this method, we will split the terms of the polynomial separated by the operator (+) or (-) between them and

simplify each term. Let's take an example to understand this. For example, (6y2 + 3y) ÷ (3y) can be solved by
following the steps of dividing polynomials by monomials given below:

1. Split the terms of the polynomial 6y2 + 3y. The terms are 6y2 and 3y.
2. Now each term will be divided by the monomial 3y i.e., (6y2 3y) + (3y ÷ 3y).

3. Each term will be simplified to its lowest form by canceling out the common factors i.e., 6y2 ÷ 3y = 2y and
3y ÷ 3y = 1.
4. The individual results are now combined with the (+) operator between them. Therefore the result is 2y + 1.

5. Hence (6y2 + 3y) ÷ (3y) = 2y + 1.

(a) What is the result of (3y8 - 4y6 + 5y4) ÷ y4

c) 3y4 - 4y4 + y2 d) 3y4 - y4 + 5y2

(b) What is the result of (p6q3 - p3q6) ÷ p3q3?

a) p - q b) p3 + q3

c) p3 - q3 d) p + q

(c) What is the value of (12x3 + 15x2 + 21x) ÷ 3x?

)
a) 4x2 + 5x + 7 b) 4x2 + 5x

17
c) 4x2 + 7 d) 5x + 7

(d) 24(x4y2z2 + x2y4z2 + x2y2z4) ÷ 8x2y2z2 = 3(x2 + y2 + z2)
