About the Authors
Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor, is a professor in the Business and Computer Technology Division at Pasadena City
College in Pasadena, California. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Robert Morris
College (Pennsylvania), a master’s degree in Business from Northern Illinois University, and a doctorate in Adult
and Community Education from Ball State University (Indiana). Before joining Pasadena City College, she spent
12 years in the computer industry, where she was a systems analyst, sales representative, and director of Customer
Education with Unisys Corporation. She also worked for Ernst & Young on the development of large systems
applications for their clients. She has written and developed training materials for custom systems applications in
both the public and private sector, and has also written and edited numerous computer application textbooks.
This book is dedicated to my students, who inspire me every day.

Alicia Vargas is a faculty member in Business Information Technology at Pasadena City College. She holds a
master’s and a bachelor’s degree in business education from California State University, Los Angeles, and has

Dès l’entrée en guerre de la Grande-Bretagne, le prince de
Galles, qui avait déjà accompli une période d’instruction militaire, fut
incorporé comme lieutenant dans les Grenadier-Guards. Pendant

qu’un obus vient de blesser à mort, tout près. Il a expiré sur le vieux
lit aux rideaux épais.
Hâtivement on lui a rendu le dernier hommage: ses yeux fermés
par son officier d’ordonnance, on a rejeté sur lui son manteau de
campagne. Pour cierges, deux bougies dans les simples chandeliers
familiaux, et, sur la poitrine du vaillant soldat, l’or et l’émail de la
croix de la Légion d’honneur s’éveillent aux lueurs vacillantes des
deux minces flammes.
Un cavalier au visage grave, le sabre au poing, veille seul le corps
du chef. Au dehors, le fracas de la bataille continue.

M. l’abbé Thinot (et non Chinot), maître de chapelle à la


cathédrale de Reims, après avoir lu, dans L’Illustration du 26
septembre, l’article de M. Ashmead Bartlett, a bien voulu nous
fournir quelques précisions et des détails complémentaires.
Lors du bombardement du 4 septembre, non seulement la
cathédrale fut visée, puisque la ligne des rues et des édifices frappés
s’étend, droite, en avant et en arrière de la basilique, non seulement
deux obus qui ont éclaté à proximité endommagèrent, l’un
d’admirables statues au grand portail, l’autre les vitraux de la basse
nef Nord, mais encore un projectile est tombé directement sur le
socle du pignon du transept Nord, saccageant l’architecture et les
toits.
Le projecteur électrique qui avait été installé par nos officiers sur
la tour Nord ne l’a été qu’une seule nuit durant, comme un essai qui
n’eut aucune suite, et, en tout cas, bien avant l’entrée en contact
avec l’ennemi.
C’est le jeudi 17 que des blessés allemands—de 70 à 80—furent
amenés à Notre-Dame. Les Allemands, le matin du jour qui vit leur
retraite (12 septembre), avaient exigé un aménagement de la
cathédrale permettant d’y installer 3.000 de leurs blessés, mais ils
n’eurent pas le loisir d’en amener un seul. C’est l’autorité française
qui fit utiliser, pour les blessés abandonnés à Reims par l’ennemi, la
paille et les couvertures qui avaient été accumulées dans l’édifice. Le
général Franchet d’Espérey prenait ainsi, pensait-il, alors que la ville
souffrait, depuis trois jours déjà du bombardement, les garanties les
meilleures pour la protection du monument.
Le vendredi 18 cependant, et le samedi 19, la cathédrale fut très
nettement et impitoyablement visée. Un minimum de 35 à 40 obus,
presque tous du plus fort calibre, se sont abattus sur le vaisseau,
n’en épargnant aucune partie, depuis les puissantes assises des
contre-forts jusqu’au sommet des tours, en passant par la dentelle
de pierre qui couronne les combles, depuis l’abside jusqu’à la
merveilleuse façade où, sur des échafaudages, devait tomber le
premier projectile incendiaire. De ces affirmations notre interlocuteur
peut témoigner; nous savons qu’en compagnie de l’archiprêtre il n’a
pas quitté Notre-Dame pendant ces journées douloureuses. Nous
laissons d’ailleurs ici la parole à M. l’abbé Thinot:

«C’est le vendredi 18, dans la matinée, que des débris


d’architecture projetés par un obus ont tué, dans la basse
nef Sud, deux des blessés étendus. La mitraille en
atteignit bien d’autres.
»Deux fois ce jour-là, pendant la terrible rafale, et une
fois le lendemain samedi, nous mîmes ces malheureux, à
l’abri dans l’escalier de la tour Nord. Je ne fis, dans cette
opération qu’aider M. l’archiprêtre,—et non Mgr le
cardinal, comme on l’a dit par erreur, puisque Son
Eminence, de retour du conclave, ne put rallier sa ville
épiscopale que quatre jours après le sinistre.
»Et c’est encore M. l’abbé Landrieux, curé-archiprêtre
de la cathédrale, dont je n’avais qu’à admirer le sang-
froid et à suivre le calme courage pendant ces jours et
particulièrement ces heures tragiques, qui, au moment où
les blessés cherchaient à sortir de l’édifice en flammes,
prévint les plus terribles excès: il releva le canon des
fusils que le scrupule de la consigne abaissait, il raisonna
l’exaspération d’un peuple que le forfait des ennemis ne
justifiait que trop, il empêcha, en un mot, des faits que le
lendemain nous eussions très amèrement déplorés.»

Pendant que nous prenions congé de lui, M. l’abbé Thinot nous


montre les formidables éclats d’un des trois obus de siège que, cinq
jours après leur crime, les Allemands jetèrent encore sur la
cathédrale.
Mme MACHEREZ, «MAIRE» DE
SOISSONS

C’est une figure bien française que celle de Mme Macherez qui ne
craignit pas de s’improviser maire de Soissons pour recevoir les
Allemands et défendre contre eux la vie et les intérêts de ses
concitoyens. A l’approche de l’ennemi, en l’absence du maire élu et
de presque tout le conseil municipal, Mme Macherez, femme de
l’ancien sénateur de l’Aisne, prit l’initiative de grouper autour d’elle,
pour assumer de lourdes responsabilités, quelques autres
personnalités énergiques: Mgr Péchenard, évêque de Soissons; M.
Blamoutier, notaire, et un conseiller municipal demeuré à son poste,
M. Musard.

Une femme
héroïque:
M me Macherez.
Ce petit comité, auquel s’était joint M. Arfeuille, pharmacien, eut
le noble rôle de tenir tête aux exigences de l’envahisseur qui, durant
plus d’un mois, défila dans la malheureuse ville sur laquelle ne
cessaient de pleuvoir les plus fantastiques réquisitions, et, entre
temps, les obus. Par son sang-froid, par son énergie hautaine,
parfois ironique, Mme Macherez réussit à en imposer aux officiers
allemands. Plus heureuse que son voisin, l’héroïque maire de Senlis,
la vaillante femme épargna à ses concitoyens les horreurs du pillage
et des fusillades; la ville de Soissons, qui, sans elle, eût sans doute
été réduite en cendres, n’a souffert que des obus lancés par les
Allemands au commencement de leur retraite.

M. Frédéric Villiers, artiste correspondant de guerre de notre


confrère anglais The Illustrated London News, a pu noter sur place
un des épisodes les plus dramatiques de la bataille de la Marne. A 10
kilomètres de Sézanne, l’antique château de Mondement se dresse
fièrement sur un mamelon d’où l’on domine les marais de Saint-
Gond et la vaste plaine fermée au loin par la silhouette indécise de
l’Argonne. L’importance stratégique de cette position était telle qu’au
cours de la journée où s’effectua la retraite définitive des Allemands
les deux armées se la disputèrent avec un acharnement
extraordinaire. Nos troupes, qui l’occupaient d’abord, en furent
délogées deux fois; fortement appuyées par l’artillerie, elles livrèrent
un dernier assaut à la baïonnette, et, entrant par les fenêtres,
trouvèrent le dîner servi pour les officiers allemands qui n’avaient
point prévu ce retour offensif. Dans sa traduction exacte de ce que
dut être la lutte, notre dessin fait revivre une de ces mêlées
sauvages, héroïques, qui se livraient sous les donjons du moyen âge.
L’incendie, les trous d’obus semblent peu de chose à côté d’un si
terrible corps à corps, et cet épisode de la grande bataille est
d’autant plus glorieux pour nos armes qu’on y vit la garde
prussienne enfoncée par deux régiments de ligne, dont un de
l’armée de réserve.
