ASSIGNMENT 3: SAVANNAH BUILDING IN ITS HISTORIC URBAN CONTEXT

Task: Focusing on your Savannah, your task is to analyze how your building relates to its historic
urban context. Using archival maps, photographs, and other visual media available online,
provide a visual analysis of that historic setting.

DUE by Friday, May 10, 11:59pm (5% per day late penalty)

Required Identification Information:

In the top right or top left of your page, include the following information: [Your name], Course
number and full course name, professor’s name, academic quarter and assignment # and title
- DO NOT put this information into a header; type it as part of the normal text.

Assignment Title: Identify your building by its historic name (with present name in parentheses)

1. Analysis of your building’s urban location: Provide a 100-150 analysis of your building’s
present urban location in relation to its position within the Savannah urban plan. What kind of
lot does it stand on (a tything or trust lot; or is it outside the downtown plan)? What kind of
street or urban space does it face or front – a square, a wide civic street or a narrower
utilitarian street or lane? If it’s inside the downtown plan, where in its ward is it located, more
central or on the periphery? Be sure to identify the ward.

2. Analysis of the Past Context: Provide a 350-400 analysis of what your building's urban
setting, was like in the late 19th century / early 20th century.
A. Using Sanborn Fire Insurance maps (see separate guidelines for use) from the 1880s through
1916, determine what kinds of buildings stood around your building within a few blocks in each
direction. These maps provide snap shots of the evolution of the city at specific moments in
time (1884, 1888, 1898 and 1916).
- What were the prevailing building functions, sizes, materials, and relative density (proximity of
buildings to one another)? Emphasize patterns more than listing what is around your building
- How typical or common was your building’s type / function for its area?
- Were there any notable changes from the 1880s to 1916?
B. Using historic photographs, postcards or other historic visual media, analyze how your
building’s style, materials or other design features related to other buildings. Does it blend in
or stand out?

3. Visuals: Include images of Sanborn maps showing both broader context (circling the location
of your building) and detailed views of the more immediate setting of your building. Include
historic images of both your building and some of the representative or prominent other
buildings around your building, ideally keyed to the broader context map (such as with arrows).
NB: make sure each image has a caption identifying what it is, the year of the image (and the
source of the image in parentheses).
