PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT CLASS –IX CHAPTER – SOUND 1. A Sound wave produces 20 crests and 20 troughs in 0.4 sec. Find the frequency of the wave. 2. A body is vibrating 6000 times in 1 min. If the velocity of sound in air is 360 m/s, find (i) Frequency (ii) wavelength. 3. A stone is dropped into a well 44.1 m deep and sound of the flash is heard after 3.13 s. Calculate the velocity of the sound in air. 4. A ship sends out ultrasound that returns from the sea bed and is detected after 3.42 sec. If the speed of the ultrasound through sea water is 1531m/s , what is the distance of the sea bed from the ship? 5. In a ripple tank , 12 full ripples are produced in one sec. If the distance between a crest and trough is 10 cm, find (i) wavelength (ii) frequency (iii) velocity of the wave 6. Give two medical and two industrial use of ultrasonic waves. 7. What is meant by reverberation of sound and how can we reduce it? 8. A hospital uses an ultrasonic scanner to locate tumour in a tissue. What is the wavelength of the ultrasound in a tissue in which speed of ultrasound is 1.5 km/sec and its operating frequency is 4 MHz? 9. Distinguish between longitudinal wave and transverse wave. 10. Compare the frequencies of note A and note C played during the musical concert when speed of the sound is 340 m/s and wavelength of A and C are 1.5 m and 1.33 m respectively. 11. The ratio of the frequencies of the two mechanical waves in a medium is 3:4. Find the ratio of their (i) wavelengths (ii) time periods 12. Meera is standing between two hills . She shouted loudly and hears first echo after 0.5 sec and second echo after 1 sec. What is the distance between two hills? (v =334 m/s) . 13. Show with the help of an experiment that sound also obeys laws of reflection. 14. State the conditions for echo to take place. 15. What is SONAR? Explain its use .
