SANDWICH PANEL SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
sandwich panel system is a modular building material composed of two outer layers (skins)
and a core material providing insulation and structural support, often used for cladding walls
and roofs.

COMPOSITION
 Outer Layers (Skins): Typically made of metal, plastic, or composite materials, these
layers provide strength, weather resistance, and form.
 Core Material: A lightweight material like foam, honeycomb, or balsa wood, offering
thermal and acoustic insulation.

FUNCTION
 Cladding: Sandwich panels are used to cover buildings and structures, providing
protection from the elements.
 Insulation: The core material provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation,
contributing to energy efficiency and comfort.
 Strength: The combination of the outer layers and core material provides a high
strength-to-weight ratio.

APPLICATIONS
 Walls and Roofs: Common applications include cladding external walls and roofs of
buildings.
 Internal Walls: Can also be used for insulated internal walls and cold storage
applications.
 Prefabricated Structures: Sandwich panels are well-suited for prefabricated buildings
due to their ease of assembly and transport.

TYPES
1. Face Sheets

Face sheets are the outer layers of the sandwich panel which are made of thin materials. The
following are some of the types of face sheets:

2. Metal Faced Panels

Metal Faced Panels are the most popular choice due to their strength and durability. It
commonly uses steel or aluminum which is best for commercial and industrial buildings, and
warehouses.

3. Fiberglass faced panels

Fiberglass is also a popular choice for cold storage and food processing facilities. exceptional
resistance to chemicals, is lightweight, and flexible making it easy to mall into different
shape and sizes..

4. High-Density Plastic Faced Sandwich Panels

The less popular choice for commercial and industrial facilities but offers an advantage for
clean rooms and laboratories because of its weight and great corrosion resistance.

CORE MATERIALS
The core material of a sandwich panel is important for insulation purposes and weight. Here
are some of the more common core options:

1. Polyisocyanurate (PIR) Core Panels:

Polyisocyanurate or PIR is suitable for roofings and walls because it provides great thermal
insulation and fire resistance.

2. Mineral Wool Core Panels:

Rockwool is more commonly used as partitions for walls and offer good fire-resistance and is
also known as an excellent acoustic insulator.

3. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

Expanded Polystyrene has lower fire resistance than other materials but is relatively
cheaper. It has good insulation properties so it can be a good alternative to the other core
materials.

4. Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)

It works the same way as the Extended Polystyrene. it is also cheaper, has good insulation
properties, and has higher moisture resistance which makes it slightly better than EPS.

5. Aluminum Honeycomb Core Panels

Out of all the core materials, this has the highest strength-to-weight ratio which is why it is
the common choice for aircraft and architectural cladding.

ADVANTAGES
 Lightweight: Despite their strength, sandwich panels are relatively lightweight,
reducing structural load.
 High Insulation: Excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
 Durability: The materials used are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions.
 Cost-Effective: Sandwich panels can be a cost-effective solution for cladding and
insulation.

DISADVANTAGES
 Potential for Disbonds: The bonded interface between the skin and core can be
prone to damage under repeated loading.
 Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance are necessary to ensure the
longevity of the panels.

COST CONSIDERATIONS
 Core Material: The type of core material (PUF, PIR, EPS, etc.) significantly impacts the
price.
 Thickness: Thicker panels generally cost more due to increased material usage.
 Application: Panels designed for specific applications (e.g., cold storage, roofing,
walls) may have different price points.
 Supplier: Prices can vary depending on the supplier and location.
 Installation Costs: Factor in installation costs, which can vary based on complexity
and location.
