Adamu took the bucket and set off. He was determined not to rerurn unless
he could get some water. He noticed as he went that something unusual
which he could neither understand nor explain was going on in the village.
There was no children playing, no men loitering under the trees smoking
their pipes, the domestic animals had stopped making their usual noises. The
village was silent .
The usual watering place was dry: there were great cracks in the riverbed,
and the rocks were hot as Adamu touched them. There was not the slightest
trace of moisture left. He looked around him and remembered a time when
the trees were covered with green leaves. But the green leaves were now no
more!

Passage B
Ajulu was a beautiful girl. Her brother told her: ‘Go and guard the millet!’She
said: What do I do if the lion appears? He said :’ I will build you a platform to
sit on.’There she sat all day, shouting at the birds who came in flocks to eat
the millet. At last the lion appeared and attacked her. He was an enormous
animal. He rose hind legs and reached across the platform with his front
claws . The girl shricked and cried for help. But her brother was nowhere to
be seen
In the bush there live a small hut in which Zangu lived with his old mother.
They had no cattle, so he could not get a bride. When he heard Ajulu crying
he came running. Though Iran faster than an antelope, the lion could still eat
faster still. When Zangu arrived, the lion had gone; with Ajulu in his stomach.
Zangu took his spear and his matchet, and started out in search of the lion.
Hefound him asleep, lying on a rock. He opened the lion’s stomach carefully
with his hunter's knife, and out stepped Ajulu, happy to breathe the fresh
evening breeze. And out came also many other people, all praising Zangu.
Ajulu later married Zangu who had saved her life.
