Project Title
A. Design Problem
The challenge is to design an Eco-Spiritual Vernacular Chapel that embodies the spiritual and communal
essence of traditional Filipino worship spaces while integrating sustainable innovations. The chapel
must be deeply rooted in vernacular architectural principles, using locally sourced materials, passive
cooling techniques, and nature-inspired design elements. It should serve as a sacred, inclusive space for
prayer, meditation, and community gatherings while being adaptable to various environmental conditions.
With urbanization and climate change affecting the way religious structures are built, the project must
balance cultural authenticity with modern technology, ensuring that it remains resilient, sustainable, and
deeply connected to nature.
B. Design Objectives
1. Vernacular Inspiration: The design should draw from indigenous Filipino architecture, such as
the Bahay Kubo, Bahay na Bato, or tribal worship spaces, while adapting them to modern needs.
2. Eco-Spiritual Harmony: The chapel should foster a strong connection between spirituality and
nature, incorporating elements like open-air spaces, natural materials, and organic forms.
3. Sustainability & Climate Responsiveness: Utilize passive cooling, renewable energy sources
(solar panels, rainwater collection), and low-impact building materials.
4. Community Integration: The chapel should serve not only as a place of worship but also as a
venue for community rituals, cultural events, and environmental advocacy.
5. Innovative Yet Traditional: While using new techniques, the design must still reflect the essence
of traditional Filipino sacred spaces, maintaining a sense of cultural continuity.
C. Site Considerations
1. Choose a location with strong cultural or environmental significance (e.g., near a natural water
body, forest, or mountain).
2. Consider accessibility and how the chapel integrates into the landscape without harming the
natural surroundings.
3. Adapt the structure to respond to climate conditions (flood-prone, typhoon-prone, or earthquake-
prone areas).
D. Programmatic Requirements
1. Main Worship Hall – Open, flexible space with symbolic design elements.
2. Meditation & Reflection Areas – Semi-private nooks for personal prayer.( Optional )
3. Multi-Purpose Gathering Space – Can host community events and cultural rituals.
4. Landscaped Courtyard or Garden – Enhancing spiritual connection to nature.
5. Sustainability Features – Solar panels, rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation systems.
