DRAFT 3.1
07/26/16
1 EXT. SHORELINE - DAY 1
The boat pulls into its slip in the busy marina. On the deck *
is BRUCE, 22, good-looking with an air of sophistication.
The sun begins to set over the quiet, suburban town. We see
the townsfolk take living on the shore to heart, with typical
sea shells and fishing paraphernalia adorning their yards and
the outside of the houses. *
As the sun begins to set into the horizon, the water begins
to stir. For a fleeting moment, we catch a glimpse of what
appears to be a FIN break the surface of the water. It
vanishes as quickly as it appeared.
Well kept homes line the street. This isn’t exactly the
richest part of town, but still nice in a modest and simple
way. A car pulls into the driveway and parks.
SANDY
Laura!? Chloe?!
Green (07/25/2016) 2.
SANDY (CONT’D)
Laura!?
Sandy rushes into the room to see CHLOE, 10, asleep in her
bed. Relief washes over her, but it turns to anger as she
stares out of the bedroom window at a car parked across the
street.
NICK
You sure about out here?
LAURA
(kissing him between each
pause)
It’s a big. Free. Country.
LAURA (CONT’D)
Kill me, please.
NICK
Rest in peace.
SANDY
Out of the car. NOW!
LAURA
Mom! You weren’t supposed to be *
home until later.
Green (07/25/2016) 3.
SANDY
Good thing I got out early. I could
only imagine what would have
happened if I didn’t.
LAURA
Nothing that already hasn’t.
SANDY
Inside!
Laura rolls her eyes, but obeys her mother. Nick gets out of *
the car, looking as if he’s about to stand up to Sandy.
NICK
Sandy. Um... Mrs. Wilcox.
SANDY
WHAT?
NICK
You... uh... left your headlights
on.
SANDY
Go home, Nicholas.
NICK
Ah, yup.
LAURA
Are you happy? You’ve embarrassed
me for life. Again.
4.
SANDY
Do you know how scared I was coming
home to the door being open and all
the lights off. I thought something
happened to you!
LAURA
Still in one piece.
SANDY
You’re supposed to be in here
watching your sister.
LAURA
Chloe’s been asleep for hours.
SANDY
That’s not the point.
LAURA
Would you rather I brought him
inside? I was trying to be
respectful.
SANDY
I don’t even think you know what
that word means anymore. Since
you’ve met him, you’ve done nothing
but slide down hill. Don’t think
the school didn’t call me about you
skipping class today.
LAURA
I had cramps.
SANDY
I’m serious, Laura. I don’t want
you hanging around him anymore. I
know a trouble maker when I see
one.
LAURA
Did you ever think that maybe I’m
the bad influence on him? Of course
not, that would have to mean you
might have done something wrong.
5.
SANDY
I’m trying the best I can with you
girls. You know it hasn’t been
easy.
LAURA
Do me a favor, then. Stick to
scaring guys away in your own love
life. Not mine.
SANDY
Oh, that’s it. You’re grounded for
the weekend.
LAURA
You already said I could go out
with Bre! It’s my birthday!
SANDY
Well, I did all the work that day,
so you’re going to spend it here.
With me.
Laura’s younger sister, CHLOE, 10, opens the door to her room
and appears in the hallway.
CHLOE
Is Laura in trouble?
SANDY LAURA
Yes. No.
CHLOE (CONT’D)
(to Laura)
Good luck.
LAURA
Gee, thanks.
SANDY
Get back to bed, Chloe.
Chloe disappears back into her room and closes the door.
Sandy looks back to Laura only to see she’s no longer in the
hallway. The door to her room SLAMS.
SANDY (CONT’D)
Laura. Can you come back out,
please. We can talk about this.
Green (07/25/2016) 6.
Laura lays on her bed and puts her earbuds in, turning the
music on her phone up.
SANDY
(O.S.)
Laura?
Sandy still stands at the door and gives one more knock.
SANDY
(to herself)
I’m sorry.
LAURA
(whispered)
Hey, babe. Are you there yet?
(beat)
Well, don’t take too long.
(beat)
What do you think? She freaked!
(beat)
All right. See you soon.
She checks her messages and notices one from Bre that says,
“Here.”
The door to Laura’s bedroom eases open as she peeks out the
door. The coast is clear so she heads towards the stairs as
quietly as possible.
Green (07/25/2016) 7.
LAURA
Go! Go!
Laura and Bre walk from the parking lot down the docks.
They pass Bruce on the deck of his boat, washing down the *
side, listening to a slower melodic song.
LAURA
Well, hello, gorgeous.
BRE
I’ve never seen him around. Must be
a tourist.
LAURA
A rich one at that. Look at the
size of that boat. Go talk to him. *
BRE
No!
LAURA
Why not?
BRE
I don’t know. He’s... *
(thinking up an excuse) *
...old. *
LAURA
God, Bre. It’s not like he’s 30.
I’ll do it for you.
BRE
Laura, stop!
Green (07/25/2016) 8.
LAURA
Hey, sailor boy!
BRE
Laura!
LAURA
Say hi.
BRE
(to Bruce)
Hi. I’m Bre.
LAURA
(calling off towards
Bruce)
She’s single.
BRE
So, yeah. Me and my friend are
going to go now. So I can die.
BRE (CONT’D)
I hate you.
LAURA
Lies.
BRE
Dammit, Parker!
PARKER
Wow, have you been out in the sun
all morning, Bre?
She looks at her arms and shoulders, not seeing any color
difference.
9.
BRE
No.
PARKER
You must always look this hot,
then.
Bre and Laura share and eye roll as they continue down the
pier.
BRE
You did not.
PARKER
Oh, but I did.
LAURA
Where’s Nick?
PARKER
He’s not with you guys?
LAURA
No. He told me he was running late
because he was picking you up.
PARKER
Well, this is awkward.
Laura takes out her phone and tries dialing Nick, but his
voice mail picks up.
LAURA
You really don’t know where he is?
PARKER
Swear.
Laura holds down the home button on her phone and speaks into
it.
LAURA
Find Nick.
PHONE VOICE
Finding Nick.
PARKER
(with a fake gasp)
It’s sentient!
Green (07/25/2016) 10.
LAURA
(looking at the screen)
What the hell?
BRE
What?
Laura starts walking faster down the pier as Parker and Laura
exchange smiles as they follow Laura. She passes by a number
of larger boats and stops dead in her tracks with a shocked *
expression.
NICK
Happy birthday, babe.
LAURA
This is where you were all morning?
NICK
Guilty! Parker and Bre came down
early and helped me out.
LAURA
That’s really sweet of you.
She then gives Bre and Parker hugs. When she pulls away,
Parker tries to go in for a hug from Bre who puts her hand up
in his way.
PARKER
Uh huh.
NICK
I’ve got a secret.
LAURA
What’s that?
NICK
You’re cute.
Green (07/25/2016) 11.
Laura smiles and kisses Nick on the lips. He holds her hand
and leads her up onto the boat.
BRE
Have fun, guys.
LAURA
You’re not coming?
PARKER
It’s all you two, today.
Nick unties the boat from the pier and it starts to drift off
into the water. Laura waves at Parker and Bre as they head
out to sea.
Parker puts one arm around Bre’s shoulder as they both wave
back, but Bre simply looks at the hand, then walks away,
leaving Parker by himself.
Nick’s boat glides through the water. Laura has her arms *
around him as he mans the controls. They laugh as the water *
whips up from ocean, splashing them in the face.
SANDY
Can you go see if your sister plans *
on coming out of her cave today?
CHLOE
Laura’s not here.
SANDY
What do you mean?
CHLOE
She left this morning. *
SANDY
Where’d she go?
Nick climbs the ladder back into the boat and slips, letting *
out a small exclamation of pain.
LAURA
Are you okay?
NICK
It’s fine. Just a little cut.
IN THE WATER. Nick dips his leg back into the water and *
swishes it back and forth, letting the blood wash off. *
LAURA *
Nick, where are we? *
NICK *
What do you mean? *
LAURA *
We’re a little further out than *
usual. *
NICK *
Nah, we’re fine. The Marina’s right *
over there. *
LAURA *
I’m pretty sure that’s Long Island. *
NICK *
Huh. You think? *
LAURA *
Did you get us lost? *
NICK *
No! Not on purpose... *
NICK (CONT’D) *
I think this is right. *
LAURA *
Are you sure? *
NICK *
You didn’t want to head home *
anytime soon anyway, did you? *
LAURA *
Not at all! *
NICK
Nice! Who’s it supposed to be?
LAURA
Hey!
NICK
I’m just kidding! Hurry up and jump
in!
Laura puts the portrait down, and as soon as she rises up,
Nick playfully picks her up and tosses her in the water. She
lets out a laugh as he jumps in right after her.
From deep below them, we see the two splash into the water *
near the silhouette of the boat. *
SANDY
Bre, I know she’s with him. Just
give me his number.
(beat)
Fine. Put your mother on the phone,
then.
(beat)
That’s what I thought.
Laura and Nick hug each other in the water and share a kiss, *
not too far from the boat. *
Green (07/25/2016) 14.
LAURA *
I’m really going to miss you next *
year. *
NICK *
Laura, don’t bring it up. *
LAURA *
I know, but it’s going to happen *
either way. You’re going across the *
country, and I’m not. *
NICK *
We can make it work. *
LAURA *
Come on, Nicky, I’m not delusional. *
It’s high school. It’s not made to *
last forever and I’m okay with *
that. *
NICK *
Are you breaking up with me? *
LAURA *
No! Not even. I’m just thinking *
realistically. Whatever happens *
this fall, I want you to know how *
important you are to me. *
NICK *
Hey, guess what? *
LAURA *
What? *
NICK *
Chicken butt! *
LAURA *
Always such the romantic. *
NICK *
You love it. *
Green (07/25/2016) 15.
They embrace once again just as a loud and abrasive RING TONE *
starts blaring from Nick’s phone, causing Laura to roll her *
eyes. She pulls away, about to swim back to the boat. *
NICK (CONT’D) *
Just ignore it. *
LAURA *
Can YOU ignore that? I’m going to *
turn it off. *
Laura swims to the boat and steps onto the ladder, reaching *
for the phone. While her back is turned to Nick, we see the *
unmistakable sight of a SHARK’S FIN break the surface behind *
Nick. *
Nick, sensing something, turns around just after the fin has *
vanished into the water. He turns his attention back to *
Laura. *
NICK
Who is it? *
LAURA
Ugh. It’s my mother.
NICK
Do you want to pick it up? *
NICK (CONT’D)
Never mind. *
The door to the living room opens behind her and she quickly
whips around.
SANDY
Laura!?
Chloe stands there and Sandy quickly hides a hand behind her *
back. *
CHLOE
She’s still not back.
Green (07/25/2016) 16.
CHLOE (CONT’D)
Why don’t you call Daddy? Maybe
he’s heard from her.
SANDY
I don’t want to bother your father.
I’m sure he’s busy with Jenny. *
CHLOE
Jessie.
SANDY
All the same.
NICK *
You know she’s gonna call the coast *
guard if you’re not back soon. *
Laura stops, having put some distance between herself and the *
boat. *
LAURA *
Yeah, well, they’ll never be able *
to find us thanks to your brilliant *
navigating. *
NICK *
I thought nowhere near home was *
just where you wanted to be. *
NICK (CONT’D) *
Ow. Hey. No need to kick me. *
NICK (CONT’D) *
What’s wrong? *
He jolts again. *
Green (07/25/2016) 17.
NICK (CONT’D) *
Ow! *
Laura looks worried for a moment and then gives him a shove. *
LAURA *
You’re such a jerk, sometimes. *
Don’t joke about that. *
NICK *
It’s probably just a big fish. *
LAURA *
You’re serious? Oh my god! *
NICK *
Don’t worry. Even if it is a shark, *
they basically don’t ever bite *
people. Unless they think you’re a *
seal or something. *
Laura sees the shark moving through the water and lets out a *
cry, backing into Nick, who grabs ahold of her. *
LAURA *
I see it! It is a shark. Oh my god! *
NICK *
Hey! Calm down! Calm down. *
LAURA *
We gotta get back to the boat! *
NICK *
STOP! *
NICK (CONT’D) *
Don’t do anything to provoke it. *
Just stay calm.
LAURA *
I’m calm. *
Green (07/25/2016) 18.
NICK *
I just saw this on TV. Sharks spot *
a wounded fish and they stalk it *
until it’s too weak to get away. If *
we act calm and strong, it’ll leave *
us alone. *
LAURA
You’re the one who’s shaking.
NICK *
Just don’t let it get a taste and *
you’ll be fine. *
LAURA *
A taste! *
Nick’s face goes white as he sees the fin splash through the *
surface behind Laura. It’s BIG. *
She looks behind her off of his eyes, but it’s gone. *
NICK *
Let’s get back to the boat. *
NICK (CONT’D) *
If you see it, kick it in the nose. *
LAURA *
I see it! *
NICK *
I see it too. *
LAURA *
Where’d it go? *
NICK *
I don’t know. *
Green (07/25/2016) 19.
NICK (CONT’D) *
LAURA! *
Her eyes widen as she sees the shark swimming away from her. *
The water around her begins to get cloudy with blood, as she *
grasps her side in pain. *
NICK (CONT’D)
Laura! Are you okay!?
LAURA
It bit me!
NICK
How bad?
LAURA
I don’t know.
Nick ducks under the surface for a few seconds, then pops
back up, blinking his eyes furiously from the salt water. *
NICK
You’re going to be okay. It grazed *
you. We’ll get back to the boat, *
then put some pressure on it. Can
you swim?
LAURA
Yeah. I think so.
LAURA (CONT’D)
What do we do!?
NICK
I don’t know!
NICK (CONT’D) *
Keep moving! *
UNERNEATH THE WATER, the shark’s POV heads straight for their
dangling legs.
Green (07/25/2016) 20.
LAURA *
Nick? *
NICK
Go now!
LAURA *
Are you ok? *
Nick and Laura swim towards the boat as fast as they can. *
Suddenly, Nick vanishes and Laura stops. *
LAURA (CONT’D)
Nick!
NICK
Keep going, Laura!
LAURA
What?
NICK
Turn around and keep going! Don't
you dare watch!
LAURA
No!
NICK
Turn around!
A crying Laura does what Nick asks of her and turns away, *
trying to swim towards the boat.
Nick searches around him for a brief second, and with the *
shark not in sight, starts swimming towards Laura once again. *
Green (07/25/2016) 21.
LAURA
No... *
She can’t look away, but there’s nothing to see but a circle *
of red. *
BRUCE (O.S.) *
I've got you! *
LAURA
Get me out of here! *
BRUCE
You're going to be okay.
A blanket sits not far from them. Bruce tries to place her *
down on the deck to grab it, but she clamors to him, not *
wanting to let go. *
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Okay... okay. *
Green (07/25/2016) 22.
SANDY
Laura! *
SANDY (CONT’D)
(to the EMT)
I'm her mother.
The EMT nods and lets her in the back. As they ready to load
Laura in, she catches a glimpse of Bruce finishing up talking
to a POLICE OFFICER. They make eye contact, and she mouthes *
“thank you” to him as she climbs in. *
CASEY *
(O.S.)
Mr. Kane?
CASEY (CONT’D) *
Do you mind if I ask you a few *
questions about what happened *
today? *
BRUCE
Um, sure.
CASEY *
(to the camera man) *
Ready? *
CASEY (CONT’D) *
This is Casey Jean Hempel reporting *
with an EXCLUSIVE breaking *
interview with Bruce Kane, son of *
Representative Richard Kane. Tell *
us, Bruce, how did you come across *
the girl? *
BRUCE
I just... heard her yelling, and
was close enough to get there in
time.
CASEY *
She’s alive today thanks to you. *
How does it feel to be a hero?
BRUCE
A hero?
It’s exactly how Nick and Laura left it. Deflating balloons
and ripped streamers are still there from the birthday
decorations.
LAURA
Have you guys been here all night?
CHLOE
Mommy was. Mrs. Morgan brought me
this morning. I’m sorry about Nick. *
LAURA
Mom told you?
CHLOE
(shaking her head)
It’s on every channel. *
LAURA
Sailor boy?
BRUCE
I’m sorry. Is this a bad time?
LAURA
No. Not at all. Come in.
SANDY
There he is. The man of the hour.
LAURA
Do you work here?
BRUCE
Oh, no. Well, not technically.
SANDY
Bruce is one of our volunteers down *
at the Pediatric Cancer Center.
LAURA
Really?
BRUCE
I just play video games with the *
kids sometimes. It’s just until I
go for my Masters in the fall.
LAURA
I’d never seen you before, so I
just thought you were from out of
town.
BRUCE
Yes and no. I grew up here, but
went to military school, then
college in New York. I just got
back in town a few weeks ago.
SANDY
Honey, Bruce’s father is Richard
Kane. He’s a State Representative.
LAURA
Sorry. Politics aren’t really my
thing.
BRUCE
Don’t be sorry. It’s actually a
relief to meet someone out of his
shadow.
SANDY
Well, you can tell him he has my
vote for re-election!
CHLOE
Mommy. Is there something in your
eye?
SANDY
What? No.
BRUCE
I wanted to bring you this.
He hands Laura the bag in his hand and she begins pulling out
her belongings, including her sweatshirt, cell phone, and
sketchbook.
LAURA
Where’d you get them?
BRUCE
(hesitant)
They, uh, towed the boat in last
night...
The tears finally come out of Laura’s eyes and she breaks
down.
SANDY
Oh, honey...
Bruce puts his arm around her to comfort her, leading to her
hugging onto him as she lets her emotions out.
Laura lies on the bed, fast asleep. The door CREAKS open,
letting a sliver of light cut through the darkness of the
room. Bruce stands silhouetted in the doorway, looking at
Laura from afar. He checks the hallway to make sure it’s
empty, then shuts the door behind him, locking it. He heads
towards the bed.
Bruce bends down beside the bed and touches Laura’s hand.
When he notices that she’s still deep in sleep, he lightly
picks up her hand and rubs it against his cheek, as he closes
his eyes and takes it in for a moment. It’s a moment of pure
pleasure for him.
BRUCE
(whispered)
I’ve missed you.
Green (07/25/2016) 27.
He places her hand back down before leaning over Laura. His
lips are right above her, as if he’s going in for a kiss, but *
he moves further up and gently kisses her forehead.
CUT TO:
BRUCE
I heard her yelling. I saw the
blood in the water. It was...
traumatizing, but I knew I had to
save her.
CUT TO:
MRS. KANE
Bruce has been on the water for as
long as we could remember.
MR. KANE
We insisted on boating lessons at a *
young age, and we couldn’t be
happier that we did. That girl is
alive today because of it.
CUT TO:
SANDY
He’s a hero. That’s the only word I
could use to describe him. Laura’s
here, making a full recovery and
ready to be released. I owe him
everything.
CUT TO:
Green (07/25/2016) 28.
Bruce stands on the deck of his boat with the sun beginning
to set into the horizon of the ocean in the background in an
obviously staged shot.
CASEY *
Bruce Kane, son of local State Rep
Richard Kane, has become a
household name overnight for his
valiant efforts to rescue two high
school students from a blood
thirsty predator.
BRUCE
It feels great to know that I was
able to save someone’s life. Truly.
My only regret is that I couldn’t
get there sooner.
(Bruce begins to become
emotional)
Maybe then, we’d be celebrating two
saved lives.
CASEY *
(V.O.) *
18 year old Nicholas Jordan was
celebrating his girlfriend’s
birthday when his life was cut
tragically short.
CASEY *
(V.O.)
Meanwhile, local beaches will stay *
open, but officials have issued a *
shark warning for the county. Stay *
tuned as we bring you an exclusive
look into the man that is Bruce K -
Green (07/25/2016) 29.
Laura lies in the bed with the TV REMOTE in her hand and Bre
sitting beside her. She tosses the remote aside.
LAURA
Can’t they find something else to
talk about?
BRE
It’s a small town, Laura. Your TV *
movie writes itself. *
LAURA
How’s Parker? I’ve been trying to
text him all day.
BRE
He’s... good. I think?
LAURA
You suck at lying.
BRE
Fine. He’d kill me if I told you,
but he kind of broke down when he
heard. Like, full-on ugly cry. *
BRUCE
(O.S.)
Hey there.
Laura and Bre turn to the door to see Bruce standing there.
Bre immediately starts nonchalantly fixing her hair.
LAURA
Hi, Bruce.
Bruce walks in with CANDIES in his hand, and hands them over *
to Laura.
BRUCE
I figured you were sick of the
hospital food, so I wrestled a
little something away from the
kids.
LAURA
That’s really sweet. Thank you.
Green (07/25/2016) 30.
BRUCE
No problem. You look really good
today. *
BRUCE (CONT’D)
It’s Bre, right?
BRE
(nervous)
Yup. Bre. Or Breanne. Or, like,
whatever you want.
BRE (CONT’D)
I’m sorry. I just feel like I
should be asking for your autograph
or something.
BRUCE
(laughing)
Please don’t. I’m getting sick of
seeing my own face on TV, to be
honest.
BRE
At least it’s a good face!
(beat)
Wow. I’m going to shut up now.
BRUCE
Sandy said you’re heading home.
LAURA
Yeah. The doctors gave me the all
clear this morning. Just waiting
for her to finish her shift.
BRUCE
Good for you. Well, my break’s
almost over. Hopefully I’ll see you
around.
LAURA
Okay.
LAURA (CONT’D)
What?
LAURA (CONT’D)
Stop. Not even.
BRE
Whatever you say.
Sandy’s car pulls into the driveway of the house with Laura
in the front seat. Sandy gets out of the car and runs over to *
Laura’s side and opens her door, extending her hand to help
her out.
LAURA
I think I can walk, mom.
SANDY
I just don’t want you to pull a
stitch or something.
LAURA
I got it.
Chloe comes running over from across the street. She gives
Laura a hug.
CHLOE
Laura!
LAURA
Owww!
CHLOE
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to!
LAURA
Gotcha.
Laura walks into her room and looks around. At first glance,
it’s exactly how she left it the morning of the attack.
However, she quickly turns her attention to the night stand
and notices the picture of her and Nick is now missing.
LAURA
What did you do with Nick’s
picture?
SANDY
I just... I didn’t want you to get
upset.
LAURA
I know you didn’t like him, but
this is a new low.
Sandy pulls open the JUNK DRAWER in the kitchen and takes out
the framed picture. Laura snatches it from her.
SANDY
It has nothing to do with him
personally! I just wanted you to...
LAURA
What? Forget? I will never forget
what happened. And I don’t want to
forget him.
Laura wakes in the room with her door slightly ajar. She can
hear the muffled sounds of her mother’s voice downstairs.
Sandy paces the living room while on the phone. She looks
upset.
SANDY
(on the phone)
You’re a real piece of work, you
know that?
Green (07/25/2016) 33.
SANDY (CONT'D)
(beat)
Your daughter almost died! How do
you not comprehend that?
(beat)
No. I don’t want to hear your
excuses. You couldn’t even call her
on her birthday.
SANDY (CONT’D)
(on the phone)
No. I’m not going to tell her. You
should be here to do it yourself.
(beat)
You know what? Forget about it.
SANDY (CONT’D)
Laura!
LAURA
How’s dad?
SANDY
I’m sorry, honey.
LAURA
It’s fine. You know, whatever.
Screw him, right?
She reaches down and lightly touches it, running her hand
over the stitches, and turning her body to see the extent of
it. It’s a small wound, which appears to already be healing.
SANDY
(O.S.)
Laura? Can I come in?
LAURA
One second!
SANDY
Look who came to say hi!
BRUCE
How are you feeling?
LAURA
Okay. Considering.
SANDY
Can I get you guys anything?
BRUCE
I would love a glass of water, if
it’s not too much to ask for.
SANDY
Of course not! I’ll be right back.
Sandy exits the room, leaving Bruce and Laura alone in her
room. He starts walking around the room, looking at her
various pictures and knickknacks.
BRUCE
So this is your room? It’s exactly
how I imagined it would be.
LAURA
(confused, but with a
laugh)
Okay...
BRUCE
You look so happy. Maybe someday I
can see that smile.
LAURA
Can you just...
BRUCE
Here. I brought you something.
Consider it a belated Birthday
present.
LAURA
You really didn’t have to do that.
BRUCE
Of course I didn’t have to, I
wanted to. Open it!
Laura takes the wrapping off of the box, then pops it open to
discover a white gold chain NECKLACE with a diamond pendant.
Laura looks at it, stunned, then her eyes rise up to Bruce.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
I knew you’d like it. Try it on!
Laura hesitate for a moment, but takes it out of the box and
puts it around her neck, looking in the mirror. Bruce comes
up behind her and latches the back. As Bruce sees her
reflection in the mirror, a number of emotions come over him -
sadness for a brief moment before turning into elation.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
It’s perfect.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
What are you doing this weekend?
LAURA
Probably just hanging around here.
BRUCE
My parents are throwing this *
campaign fundraiser down at the *
marina. Come as my date! *
Green (07/25/2016) 36.
LAURA
I don’t know, Bruce... *
LAURA (CONT’D)
It’s nothing against you! It’s just
that... I’m definitely not ready to
go on a date with anyone.
BRUCE
I didn’t mean as like a DATE date.
My parents told me to bring some
friends, and, well... you’re kind
of the only friend I’ve made since
being back.
LAURA
I don’t even think I have anything *
to wear to something like that.
BRUCE
Don’t worry about that. I’ll take
care of everything. Please, you’d
really be doing me the favor this
time.
LAURA
Sure.
BRUCE
Really!?
LAURA
Yeah. Why not?
BRUCE
(whispered in her ear)
You’re a life saver.
The doorbell RINGS and Sandy opens the door to see a PACKAGE *
and a DELIVERY MAN walking away. It’s addressed to Laura. *
Green (07/25/2016) 37.
SANDY
Oh my. Laura! Can you come down *
here?
LAURA
What is it?
SANDY
(re: the package)
You tell me.
SANDY (CONT’D)
Oh, honey. That’s gorgeous.
Laura opens up a NOTE that was inside the box as Sandy looks
over her shoulder. It reads, “See you tonight! -Bruce”
SANDY (CONT’D)
I tell ya, if I was only 20 years
younger, I’d -
LAURA
Go on.
SANDY
Well... never mind. I was starting
to think they didn’t make boys like
him anymore.
LAURA
You sure you don’t want to go
tonight?
SANDY
Oh, stop. Now hurry up and get
ready, you’re going to be late!
Laura enters with her arm linked with Bruce. She occasionally
catches glances from the crowd, and sees them whispering
towards each other when she and Bruce walk by, which makes
her nervous. Bruce leans in to her.
BRUCE
Can I tell you something? You know,
as a friend?
LAURA
What’s that.
BRUCE
You look stunning. I knew you would *
in that dress.
LAURA
You’ve got killer taste. *
Mr. and Mrs. Kane are standing by the bar, mingling and
making small talk with ANOTHER COUPLE, when Mrs. Kane’s eyes
catch sight of Bruce.
BRUCE
We’ve been spotted.
LAURA
By who?
MRS. KANE
Bruce, sweetie!
BRUCE *
Just smile and nod. *
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Mom. Dad.
MR. KANE
We were just bragging about our son
the hero!
(re: Laura)
Green (07/25/2016) 39.
Laura nods her head. The Kanes look at Laura and Mrs. Kane is
taken aback for a moment at the sight of her. There’s a brief
awkward moment as they don’t know exactly what to say.
LAURA
It’s really nice to meet you.
MRS. KANE
Likewise, darling. That dress... is
gorgeous on you.
LAURA
Thanks. Bruce picked it out.
MR. KANE
We’re just happy you could make it *
tonight. Bruce told us all about
the ordeal you went through. Such a
brave girl.
LAURA
Bruce was the brave one.
MR. KANE
Yes. He’s turning into a good man.
It’s nice to see him dating again,
though. You must be something
special.
BRUCE
Dad...
LAURA
What?
MRS. KANE
It’s just been such a long time
since Bruce has introduced us to
one of his girlfriends. *
LAURA
Oh. I mean... we -
Green (07/25/2016) 40.
BRUCE
(cutting Laura off)
Mom, did you want me to get you
another drink?
MRS. KANE
Sure, sweetheart. Thank you. *
LAURA
What was that?
BRUCE
I can explain. *
LAURA
Bruce, I thought I made it clear.
BRUCE
No, you did! Absolutely.
LAURA
Then go tell them the truth.
BRUCE
I’m sorry. It’s just... they worry *
I keep to myself too much, so when *
they asked about who I was *
bringing, they just assumed, and I *
didn’t have the heart to correct *
them. You know parents. *
LAURA
I don’t know, Bruce.
BRUCE
Please, Laura. Just for tonight.
LAURA
(with a sigh)
Okay.
BRUCE
You’re the best!
Bruce hugs her and gives her a kiss on the cheek before
walking up to the bar to order his mother’s drink. Parker
walks by and notices Laura. *
Green (07/25/2016) 41.
LAURA
Parker!
PARKER
Hey. Look at you all painted up and
hobnobbing with the elite. *
LAURA
I’m just doing a favor for a
friend.
LAURA (CONT’D)
Why didn’t you text me back, jerk!
PARKER
I know. I wanted to come see you in
the hospital...
LAURA
Look, it’s fine. I get it. Bre told
me you weren’t doing so hot.
PARKER
Good news sure travels fast, huh? *
(beat)
But hey, you’re coming back to
school soon, right?
LAURA
Monday.
PARKER
Great! We all miss you. It’s been,
I don’t know, depressing, you know?
It’s the end of Senior year. We
should try making the best of it.
LAURA
Definitely.
MRS. KANE
Laura, darling, this is the
photographer from the Register. *
Parker puts her glass with the others on his try and quickly
walks away.
LAURA
Parker...
LAURA
Parker, let me explain.
PARKER
What? You’re single now. By all *
means, don’t waste any time. *
LAURA
Don’t be so dramatic. We’re just
friends.
Green (07/25/2016) 43.
PARKER
Whatever. Nick was planning on *
breaking up with you at the end of
summer anyway.
She bends down and places her finger tips in the water, *
briefly running them back and forth. A SHOUT in the distance *
scares her, causing her to quickly pull her hand out and *
stand up. She looks over to see a YOUNG COUPLE laughing and *
jumping into the water. *
MR. ALVES
Laura. I thought that was you.
LAURA
Mr. Alves! How are you?
MR. ALVES
I should be asking you that
question.
LAURA
I’m okay. Actually looking forward *
to coming back to school. *
MR. ALVES
Good to hear. Everyone there’s been
thinking of you.
BRUCE
Everything all right, Laura?
LAURA
Bruce, this is Mr. Alves.
Green (07/25/2016) 44.
BRUCE
(shaking Alves’ hand)
Bruce Kane.
MR. ALVES
Oh, the whole town knows who you
are by now, Mr. Kane. Not a day’s
gone by where I haven’t read about
you in the paper.
BRUCE
I wish they’d stop. There’s nothing
left to say.
MR. ALVES
Such a modest young man.
LAURA
Mr. Alves is my English teacher.
Laura looks over at the couple to see the man emerge from the *
water alone and wipe his eyes, looking around him. *
BRUCE
Really? I got certified to sub at
the school when I got back in town,
but there’ve just been no openings. *
MR. ALVES
(with a chuckle)
It’s closing in on the end of the
year, so most of us have long used
up those sick days!
BRUCE
I figured. Hopefully something
comes up. *
Laura, still seeing no sign of the woman, and seeing the man *
look around himself more and more, starts walking towards him *
with purpose. *
Bruce notices. *
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Laura? *
LAURA *
It’s the shark! Get help! *
Her shouts draw some attention behind Bruce as she runs out *
towards the swimmers. *
But as she turns back, she sees the woman emerge, laughing *
next to the man. She slows to a stop and watches the couple *
embrace, oblivious, as Bruce approaches behind her and puts *
his hands on her shoulders. She jumps at his touch. *
BRUCE
You alright? *
LAURA
I'm sorry.
She runs away towards the parking lot, as Bruce takes off *
after her.
BRUCE *
(to onlookers) *
Everything’s ok! *
Laura quickly walks towards the parking lot, away from the *
Inn, as Bruce pops out running behind her. He catches up to *
her.
BRUCE
Laura, stop!
LAURA
I'm just gonna go, okay?
BRUCE
Please don't. Come back to the *
party. *
LAURA
Bruce, I can’t. That was so *
embarrassing.
BRUCE
It's my fault, I should have known *
being by the water was a bad idea. *
LAURA
I can't let you leave, too. It's
your parents' party.
BRUCE
Please. Dick and Lily are in full
campaign mode by now. They won't
even notice we're gone.
BRUCE
And the final stop on the grand
tour.
LAURA
It’s beautiful. You’re so lucky to
have grown up here.
BRUCE
Well, there wasn’t much time to
enjoy it before they shipped me
away.
(re: the bar)
Can I get you a drink?
LAURA
Sure.
LAURA
You know, My mom’s totally got the
hots for you. She thinks you’re SO
dreamy.
BRUCE
(laughing)
You can tell her I’m flattered.
LAURA
You should be! She’s really picky
about men. Not for herself. Just *
the ones that I date. She hated *
Nick. Like HATED him.
BRUCE
Why’s that?
LAURA
I think he reminded her a lot of my *
father. God, textbook, right? Nick *
was a good guy, though. Much
sweeter than Dad ever was.
BRUCE
You think about him a lot?
LAURA
All the time. I mean, obviously.
BRUCE
Your first love never really goes
away. I think about mine every day. *
LAURA
So why aren’t you still together? *
BRUCE
It’s... complicated. I still see
her sometimes. She’s always there
when I need someone to talk to.
LAURA
That sounds really nice. You’re
lucky.
A new song begins to play through the speakers. It’s the same
slower paced song that Bruce had been listening to on his
boat earlier.
Green (07/25/2016) 48.
LAURA (CONT’D)
I love this song.
BRUCE
May I have this dance?
LAURA
You know we’re in your backyard,
right?
BRUCE
And?
LAURA
All right, sailor boy. Let’s see
what you’ve got.
LAURA (CONT’D)
You smell really nice. Better than
most boys.
BRUCE
(whispered)
Laura?
LAURA
Yes.
BRUCE
Let’s go swimming?
LAURA
Now?!
BRUCE
Yeah. I’ll change real quick, and
Mom’s got swimsuits for guests. *
Green (07/25/2016) 49.
LAURA
I don’t know... Me and water aren’t
really on speaking terms right now.
BRUCE
It’s just a pool, and I’ll be right
there with you. Come on, Ali, it’ll
be fun!
LAURA
Who’s Ali? *
BRUCE
Wow. I’m so sorry. *
LAURA
Your ex? *
BRUCE *
Guilty! *
LAURA *
Nice Freudian slip.
BRUCE
So about that swim... Laura. *
LAURA
Okay.
Laura looks a little longer than she should, and Bruce turns
to the window, catching her. He smiles and waves, and she
immediately turns red in embarrassment, but laughs at herself
and waves back.
The light in the window turns off as Bruce leaves the room,
and Laura buries her head in her hands, still laughing to
herself.
BRUCE
Coming in?
LAURA
I just have to be careful with...
you know.
BRUCE
Don’t worry. I’ve got you.
Laura slides into the pool and into Bruce’s arms. He walks
her out towards the middle.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
You good?
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Hi.
LAURA
Hi.
Laura’s eyes open and she realizes she’s on the futon in the
pool house. Her back faces Bruce as he paces back and forth
on the phone by the pool, trying to whisper. *
BRUCE
(on the phone)
No, it’s okay, baby.
51.
BRUCE (CONT'D)
You know you can call me any time
of the day.
(beat)
Of course I miss you, Ali. I miss
Every day.
(beat with a laugh)
Stop that. You know I’ll see you
soon enough.
Laura and Bre are jogging down the street, heading towards
Laura’s house. Bre has barely broken a sweat, but Laura looks
a little worse for wear, going slower and lagging behind.
BRE
You doing okay?
LAURA
Yeah. Just have to get back in the
groove. Did you talk to Parker yet?
BRE
Tried to. He’s dodging my calls,
which only happens never. He must
be really pissed.
LAURA
That’s an understatement.
BRE
How’d the rest of the night go?
LAURA
It was fine.
BRE
Just fine? Could you be more vague?
52.
LAURA
What? I left early after
embarrassing myself horribly in
front of the entire town, and came
home.
BRE
What about Bruce?
SANDY
Hi, Bre.
BRE
Hey, Mrs. Wilcox.
SANDY
What are you two talking about?
LAURA
Frivolous girly matters.
BRE
I was trying to grill your daughter
for every little detail from last
night.
SANDY
Well, she must have had quite a
time since she let her mother wait
up half the night wondering where
she was. I didn’t fall asleep until
after one.
LAURA
Mom, I already told you I was
sorry, and I came home right after
that.
SANDY
I know, I know. I’m sure Bruce took
good care of you.
LAURA
Uh huh...
Green (07/25/2016) 53.
SANDY
I get out late, so don’t let Chloe
stay up all night.
LAURA
I won’t.
Sandy heads to her car, and Bre watches until she backs up
out of the driveway and heads down the street before turning
to Laura.
LAURA (CONT’D)
Bre...
BRE
You totally hooked up with him!
LAURA
I feel so guilty! We went back to
his place, drank a little, and the
next thing I knew... Bre, you can’t
tell anyone.
BRE
Do you want to be with him?
LAURA
No! I was just vulnerable, I guess.
BRE
Well, you better let him know now
before he gets too attached.
LAURA
I don’t think there’s any chance of
that. He’s still stuck on this old
girlfriend of his.
BRUCE
That shark is still out there. That
shark is still out there. The
shark’s still out there!
Green (07/25/2016) 54.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
At the end of the day, that shark
is still out there. I just can’t,
in my right mind, let it take
another innocent life.
LAURA
What are you doing? I thought you *
wanted to go to the beach? *
CHLOE
Your boyfriend’s on TV again.
BRUCE
(on TV)
At the end of the day, that shark
is still out there. I just can’t,
in my right mind, let it take
another innocent life. I’m going to
hunt it down, find it, and kill it.
For Nick. And for Laura.
Laura sits on the fence, with her sketch book in hand. She *
looks out to the shore where Chloe is playing with a small *
group of KIDS.
Laura’s phone starts to ring and she sees that it’s Bruce. *
She lets out a sigh before answering the call.
LAURA
Hello?
BRUCE
(on the phone)
You know, you should really put
sunscreen on. You’re starting to
get a little red.
Laura starts looking around and spots Bruce standing not far
from her. He holds a BOUQUET OF FLOWERS in his hand. Laura
hangs the phone up and rises up to meet Bruce.
LAURA
Hey. Sorry about just taking off
this morning. I had to get home
before Mom went to work.
BRUCE
It’s okay. Here.
LAURA
What are these for?
BRUCE
A guy should never need a reason to
buy a pretty girl flowers.
LAURA
How’d you know I was here?
BRUCE
(changing the subject)
What? No “thank you”?
LAURA
Thank you. They’re beautiful.
BRUCE
Did you happen to catch the news
this afternoon?
LAURA
I did. Actually.
BRUCE
Don’t worry. That shark’s never
going to hurt another person again.
Green (07/25/2016) 56.
LAURA
Do you... know how to catch a *
shark? Something tells me you don’t
just put a net out.
BRUCE
Wow. I thought you’d be, I don’t
know, grateful.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Sorry. Are you okay?
LAURA
It’s just... that’s the same ring
tone Nick had.
(beat)
Listen, we need to talk.
BRUCE
That phrase is never the start of a
good conversation.
LAURA
What happened last night... it
shouldn’t have happened.
BRUCE
I thought we had a good time.
LAURA
We did! We absolutely did. But I
need a little time. And space.
BRUCE
Hey, you take however long you
need, okay? No pressure.
LAURA
Really? Wow. Okay. Good!
BRUCE
What did you think I would say?
Green (07/25/2016) 57.
LAURA
I don’t know. I guess I just
assumed you’d be mad and never want
to talk to me again.
BRUCE
Don’t worry. I’m not going
anywhere.
BRUCE
(to himself)
I don’t want to end it, but it’s
for the best. We have to move on.
(answering himself)
But you’re my everything. I can’t
live without you.
ALISON
(on voicemail)
Hey, babe! It’s Ali. I miss you.
Call me back, okay? I want to see
you soon.
BRE
You good?
LAURA
I feel like I’m going to vomit.
BRE
Why?
Green (07/25/2016) 58.
LAURA
I just don’t want to be THAT girl,
you know? Are people staring?
They’re staring.
BRE
Relax, okay? It’s just a school
day. Just like every other school
day. No one is staring.
BRE
Okay. Maybe a few people are
staring.
LAURA
Parker, what’s going on? Why is
everyone looking at me like I
strangled a puppy?
PARKER
Didn’t you guys read the paper this
morning?
BRE
No. Because we’re not Seventy.
BRE (CONT’D)
Well, that’s a little distasteful.
PARKER
What? The headline?
(loud enough for everyone
to hear)
Or the cold hearted bitch flaunting
her new man in public not a week
after Nick’s death?
Green (07/25/2016) 59.
LAURA
There is NOTHING going on between
me and Bruce. How dare you say that
about Nick!
BRE
(to Parker)
Really?
PARKER
Really.
LAURA
I’m so sorry...
BRUCE
Hi, Laura.
LAURA
What are you doing here, Bruce?
BRUCE
That’s Mr. Kane here. I’m subbing
for Mr. Alves.
LAURA
I thought I said I needed some
space.
BRUCE
Laura, I applied to work here *
before I met you. *
Green (07/25/2016) 60.
LAURA
Don’t you think it’s a little
awkward. You know, considering...
BRUCE
Well, yeah. But I didn’t pick your
class. It’s what was open. I *
couldn’t give up this opportunity. *
We can both be mature about this.
LAURA
Yeah. I guess you’re right.
BRUCE
I’m glad you’re wearing it.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
You have no idea how happy it makes
me to see it on you again.
Bruce moves his head to look eye to eye with her, as if he’s
going to kiss her, but the bell RINGS and Laura goes to her *
seat. *
BRE
What the hell?
PARKER
Where’s Mr. Alves.
BRUCE
Mr. Alves... had a bad fall last
night at home. He’ll probably be
out for a while.
Bruce stands in front of the class as they all pull out their *
copies of The Scarlet Letter. *
Green (07/25/2016) 61.
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
All right, so going from where you *
guys left off with Mr. Alves, who *
can tell me why Hester was *
ostracized from the community? *
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Yes. Parker. *
PARKER *
She couldn’t bother to keep her *
legs closed after she thought her *
husband died at sea. *
BRUCE *
I think there’s a little more to it *
than that. Care to elaborate? *
PARKER *
Why don’t you ask Laura? She seems *
to be the expert. *
LAURA *
EXCUSE YOU!? *
BRE *
Laura, calm down. *
PARKER *
You heard me. How long does it take *
for you to put make-up on two faces *
in the morning? *
LAURA *
One more word and I’ll kick your *
stones straight up into your *
throat. *
Parker laughs. *
PARKER *
(to Bruce) *
Did you hear that? She just *
threatened me! *
Green (07/25/2016) 62.
BRUCE *
I did hear that, yes. *
(beat) *
Hardly a threat since you’d *
actually have to have a pair for *
her to kick. *
PARKER *
You can’t say that to me! *
BRUCE *
That’s funny. Because I just did. *
Now go to the office. *
PARKER *
For what!? *
BRUCE *
Causing a scene in my classroom by *
attempting to slut shame one of *
your fellow classmates, which this *
school has a zero tolerance policy *
on. *
60 OMITTED 60 *
Laura opens the door to her locker and sees her reflection on
the mirror inside. Her eyes move down to the necklace she’s
wearing, and she unclasps it and puts it on the shelf. *
Parker comes out and takes off down the hallway, passing by *
the English class. Bruce is sitting at his desk, going over
Mr. Alves’s lesson plan. *
Parker stops and looks at him. Bruce raises his head and
stares back, waving to Parker with a smile. In reply, Parker
raises his middle finger before heading back down the hall.
Green (07/25/2016) 63.
63 OMITTED 63 *
PARKER
Hello?
Parker lands face first on the floor of the locker room with *
a pained cry as Bruce steps down on him, holding him in *
place. *
Bruce peeks his head out of the locker room door. When he
sees the hall is still empty, he takes off down the hall,
dumping Parker’s wallet into the trash can and rolling it *
back out of the doorway. *
Laura and Sandy are at Sandy’s car in the parking lot with a
carriage full of bagged groceries. They pile them into the
open trunk.
LAURA
It’s weird that he just showed up
like that my first day back, don’t
you think?
SANDY
Honey, Bruce has been talking about
teaching ever since he started at
the hospital. That’s why he
volunteered for pediatrics.
LAURA
Of course you’re going to take his
side.
SANDY
There’s no sides here. You’re
blowing this way out of proportion.
LAURA
I don’t know. It just made me feel
really uncomfortable.
SANDY
He’s perfectly harmless, and
honestly, maybe he’s the kind of
guy you should spend more time *
around.
Sandy closes the trunk of the car, and almost on cue, Bruce
appears right beside them, smiling. Laura’s face drops in
disbelief.
SANDY (CONT’D)
Bruce!
BRUCE
I thought that was you guys.
Green (07/25/2016) 65.
SANDY
What a coincidence. Laura was just
telling me about the new job.
Congratulations.
LAURA
(forward and cold)
What are you doing here?
SANDY
Laura!
BRUCE
(of course)
Shopping.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
You took the necklace off.
LAURA
Yeah. I just... didn’t want to lose
it somewhere.
LIZ
Bruce!?
BRUCE
Hi, Liz.
LIZ
It’s been so long.
When she pulls away from the hug, the nervous Bruce gestures
towards Sandy and Laura.
BRUCE
Liz Vaughn, this is Sandy Wilcox
and -
LIZ
Laura! Of course. God, what an
ordeal you went through.
(to Bruce)
The whole family was so proud to
see you all over the news.
Green (07/25/2016) 66.
BRUCE
How are they?
LIZ
Good! Mom and Dad ask about you. *
You should come see them sometime.
BRUCE
Yeah. I will. Definitely.
LAURA
How do you guys know each other?
LIZ
Bruce used to date my sister.
Alison.
BRUCE
I’ve got to get going. It was great
seeing you, Liz. Give my best to
the family.
LIZ
Oh, yeah... Of course.
(to Sandy and Laura)
Nice meeting you guys.
BRUCE
I’ll see you tomorrow, Laura.
NEWS FOOTAGE shot from the shore of Bruce chumming the waters
off the coast. He looks intently at the waters as he throws
the chum overboard.
The song ends, then begins again from the beginning. On loop. *
He looks out into the bloody water with no sign of the shark.
BRUCE
(to himself)
We have to move on.
(answering himself)
But you’re my everything.
CASEY *
Are we ready to go again? *
Make sure to get the sign in the *
background. It’s useless without *
the sign! *
CASEY (CONT’D) *
Great. Let’s go. *
(to Bruce) *
Bruce, can you tell us how it’s *
going out there? Any signs? *
BRUCE
Still no luck finding it, but I
refuse to give up. I know he’s out
there and this time, it’s personal.
CASEY *
Great, Bruce. Perfect. The piece *
will run on the morning show. We’re *
getting AMAZING feedback from your *
appearances. You’re ratings gold. *
BRUCE
Actually, can I get one more take?
I think I can do better with that
last line.
Green (07/25/2016) 68.
CASEY *
(with a wink) *
You got it, sweetheart. *
Class has already begun as Parker enters the room. His face
is bruised around the nose. The students stare at him as he
hands a PASS to Bruce and takes his seat behind Laura.
BRUCE
How are you feeling, Parker?
PARKER
Fine.
BRUCE
All right, everything off your
desks except for a pen or pencil.
Pop quiz on last night’s reading.
The class moans as they obey. Bruce walks down Laura’s aisle
and subtly places his hand on her shoulder as he drops the
paper on her desk.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Everything okay?
Bre and Laura are eating lunch on the benches outside of the
school.
LAURA
You should have seen how he reacted
when she brought up Alison.
Something’s off.
BRE
I don’t know, Laur. He seems pretty
normal to me.
Green (07/25/2016) 69.
LAURA
Don’t you think it’s weird how he
just pops up everywhere? It’s like
he always knows where I’m going to
be.
BRE
Yeah, it’s a little strange.
Definitely. But at the same time,
the guy needs a job, and he needs
to buy groceries. He’s probably
just lonely. You said yourself he
doesn’t really have any friends.
LAURA
Maybe you’re right. I’m probably
just overreacting.
LAURA (CONT’D)
What happened to him?
BRE
Katherine told me he was attacked
in the locker room after detention.
LAURA
Do they know who did it?
BRE
(shaking her head)
No. They just stole his wallet and
ran.
PARKER
Bruce? Mr. Kane.
BRUCE
What can I do for you, Parker? *
PARKER
Do you know what time it is?
BRUCE
It’s a little after 12.
Parker looks down at the watch then locks eyes with Bruce. *
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Anything else? *
PARKER
Nice watch. *
BRUCE
You’re a smart kid, Parker.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
And a smart kid would know that
next time maybe he won’t be lucky
enough to walk away with just a few
bruises.
Parker swallows and bites down on his lips. The bell RINGS,
signifying the end of lunch and Bruce smiles.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
You have a good rest of your day,
okay, bud?
Bre and Laura walk back in and see a small group gathered
around Laura’s locker.
LAURA
What the hell?
She storms over and pushes through the few gathered students
to see someone has spray painted “HOT FOR TEACHER” on her
locker. The A is larger than the other letters and in red,
while the rest are black. One of the girls looking on is
ASHLEY.
Green (07/25/2016) 71.
ASHLEY
Looks like we know what grade
you’ll be getting in English class
this semester.
BRE
Oh, knock it off, Ashley! Like *
you’ve never hooked up with a guy *
you shouldn’t have. *
Bre cringes when she realizes what she said, and Laura’s eyes *
go wide in anger. Ashley and the other students smile in *
shocked glee.
ASHLEY *
Oh my god, we thought it was just a *
joke! Good going, Laura! *
LAURA
Nice, Bre. Thanks. *
BRE
Laura, wait!
She ignores her and keeps on going. She quickens her pace as
tears form in her eyes and she turns a corner. Standing in
front of her is Parker at his locker.
PARKER
Don’t worry, I didn’t write that on
your locker.
LAURA
I know.
PARKER
You can tell your boyfriend I got
the message loud and clear. I’ll
leave you alone.
LAURA
You think it was Bruce that did
this to you?
PARKER
Like you didn’t know. *
Parker grabs his bag and slams the locker shut near Laura’s
face, taking off before she has the chance to respond.
Green (07/25/2016) 72.
LAURA
I miss you.
We hear the front door open and Laura’s voice. She walks into
the living room on the phone.
LAURA
(on the phone)
Yeah, I know you’re sorry, but how
could you say something so stupid?
(beat)
You know what? Save it, Bre. Don’t
talk to me.
Laura hangs the phone up and she stops in her tracks at the
sight in front of her.
LAURA (CONT’D)
What are you doing in here?
BRUCE
Your mom needed a last minute
babysitter when you didn’t come
home after school, and I
volunteered.
LAURA
Chloe, don’t you have homework?
CHLOE
Just one more game!
LAURA
Chloe!
BRUCE
You heard your sister. We can play
again next time I come over, okay?
CHLOE
Okay!
LAURA
Next time?
BRUCE
Yeah! I gave up my shifts at the
hospital a couple days a week so
you don’t have to watch her all the
time.
LAURA
Was that my mom’s idea, or yours?
BRUCE
Hers. She gave me a spare key so
I’ll be able to get in... whenever
I want.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Is everything okay with Bre? You
look really upset.
Green (07/25/2016) 74.
LAURA
It’s just a stupid fight. I don’t
know. I really just want to be
alone right now.
BRUCE
Of course! Feel better, okay? She’s
not worth getting mad about.
Not more than fifty feet from her house, a car pulls out of
one of the connecting streets, and turns onto Bre’s. It
follows close behind her as she jogs, unbeknownst to Bre as
her music blasts into her ears. The car is instantly
recognizable as Bruce’s car.
Bre finally stops abruptly and rips out her head phones,
causing the car to quickly brake. She turns around and starts
walking towards the car, shielding her eyes from the sun in
an attempt to see who’s inside to no avail.
The car speeds forward and swerves around Bre. She watches as *
it rockets down the road, then takes a quick left hand turn
and vanishes.
BRE
Asshole.
75.
SMASH TO BLACK
LAURA
(to the phone)
Hey, Bre. I was hoping to talk to
you today. I don’t like being mad
at you. Can you call me back?
She hangs up the phone and looks back at the school. She can
see Bruce standing in the window of the English classroom,
staring at her. She quickens her pace.
Laura enters the room to find Sandy waiting for her, still in
her work clothes. She looks upset.
LAURA
Hey, mom. What’s up?
SANDY
It’s Bre. They brought her into the
hospital this morning. She was hit
by a car while jogging.
LAURA
What? Is she okay!?!
SANDY
Uh... she will be. A couple broken
bones and a concussion.
Green (07/25/2016) 76.
LAURA
Did they get who did it?
SANDY
No. There were no witnesses, and
she couldn’t see the driver.
LAURA
That’s it.
SANDY
Laura, where are you going!?
LAURA
I’m telling you, it was Bruce Kane.
He also attacked Parker Lowe at the
school.
OFFICER *
THAT Bruce Kane? *
LAURA *
Yes. *
OFFICER *
The hero. *
LAURA *
Yes, everyone keeps saying that. I
get it. But I’m telling you, he hit
Bre.
OFFICER
Did you witness the accident?
LAURA
No.
(beat)
But... I mean...
Green (07/25/2016) 77.
LAURA (CONT'D)
I told him how I got into a fight
with her last night, and today
she’s in a hospital bed.
OFFICER *
Look, I’m going to be honest. *
You’re not giving me anything to go *
on here. *
LAURA
So you’re not going to do anything?
OFFICER
Without any evidence or witnesses?
You’re talking about the law here.
We can’t just go arresting people
because you’ve got some kind of
hunch!
Laura storms down the steps in her own world and immediately
CRASHES into someone. She looks up and sees Bruce standing in
front of her.
BRUCE
Hi, Laura.
LAURA
Bruce. Did you follow me here?
BRUCE
What? No. I’m meeting my parents
for dinner down the street. What
ere you doing at the police
station?
LAURA
Oh... I was just trying to see if
there was any information about
what happened to Bre.
BRUCE
Why would you care. Aren’t you
really mad at her? That’s what you
said yesterday.
LAURA
Yeah, I mean, we got into a fight,
but she’s still my best friend.
78.
BRUCE
Best friends don’t fight, Laura.
You shouldn’t be so back and forth
on who you keep close to you.
LAURA
I’ve got to go.
BRUCE
Hey. What are you doing tomorrow
night? We should go out.
LAURA
Isn’t that, like, against the
school rules?
BRUCE
I won’t tell if you won’t.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Alison told me not to ask you, but
I figured I’d give it a shot.
LAURA
You talk about me with Alison?
BRUCE
Yeah. All the time. She’s usually
great with advice. So what do you
say?
LAURA
Uh... tomorrow’s mom’s late night
at the hospital. I’m on Chloe duty.
BRUCE
Maybe I can stop by then.
LAURA
Can I let you know? I’m just still
really far behind on a lot of
homework from the time I missed.
BRUCE
Sure.
The door opens up and Bruce walks in, placing his spare keys
back into his pocket. He looks around before walking up the
stairs.
Laura is asleep in her bed as the door to her room opens up.
Bruce appears and enters, quietly looking at all her stuff.
The portrait she drew of Nick is now framed on her wall. He
glares at it. *
LAURA
Mom, we have to talk.
Green (07/25/2016) 80.
SANDY
Yes, we do. You want to tell me
where you’ve been all day? I know
it wasn’t at school!
LAURA
Who told you that?
SANDY
Bruce.
LAURA
Of course.
SANDY
He also said you were at the police
station last night trying to blame
him for what happened to Bre?
Laura, what’s going on? I thought
we were starting over after the
accident.
LAURA
I know you think Bruce is the
second coming, but I’m telling you,
he’s certifiable. He was in the
house last night!
SANDY
Laura, stop. *
LAURA
You think I’m lying!? Great. Trust
the stranger over your own
daughter.
SANDY
I honestly don’t know what to think
anymore! I’m trying to give you the
benefit of the doubt here! You’re
skipping school again, you’re
unreliable with Chloe, and you’re
accusing some poor guy of running
your best friend off the road!? Is
this because of your father?
LAURA
Give me a break! This has nothing
to do with Dad! Now I’m starting to
see why he left you!
SANDY
Okay.
Sandy rises up and puts her mug in the sink and rinses it
out.
LAURA
Mom...
SANDY
Just... *
PARKER
And my day is complete. *
LAURA
Can’t run away from me now.
PARKER
Sure I can.
Parker puts his bussing tray down and walks into the Men’s
room. Laura lets out a frustrated sigh as she looks around
the sparsely populated restaurant. When she’s sure no one is
looking, she follows him. *
PARKER
What the hell, Laura!?
LAURA
Oh, please, like I’ve never seen
one before.
PARKER
You’re going to get me fired.
Green (07/25/2016) 82.
LAURA
Listen, I believe you about Bruce.
I think he’s the one who hit Bre,
too.
PARKER
Yeah, well, go tell it to the cops
then. I want nothing to do with it.
LAURA
I tried. They won’t do anything.
I’m scared, Parker. He’s following
me everywhere. You’re the only one *
I can trust.
PARKER
I don’t know.
LAURA
Look, I know you’re pissed at me. I
swear, I never had any feelings for
Bruce. I still think about Nick
every day. You have no idea how
much I cared about him.
PARKER
What are we supposed to do? We’re
kids, Laura.
LAURA
I want to go talk to his ex-
girlfriend, Alison. I looked up the
family and I found her sister on
Facebook. They live in Stonington.
Maybe she can help talk some sense *
in to him.
PARKER
(with a sigh)
All right. I’ll pick you up in the
morning.
LAURA
Thank you.
PARKER
Laura? I lied to you before. Nick *
was never going to break up with
you.
LAURA
Don’t go ugly crying on me now.
Parker and Laura get out of Parker’s car and approach the
front door of the large, beautiful home.
PARKER
So, is there like a game plan? Are
you going to distract Alison while
I go searching her room for dirt?
LAURA
Relax, Nancy Drew. We’re just going
to ask her to talk to him.
They reach the door and Laura presses her finger against the
doorbell. It CHIMES inside the house, followed soon by Liz
answering the door.
LAURA (CONT’D)
Hi, Liz. I don’t know if you
remember me...
LIZ
Laura, of course. Come in.
LAURA
Thanks.
Liz leads them into the living room and gestures for them to
sit down.
LAURA
This is Parker.
LIZ
Nice to meet you. So, what brings
you here? Everything okay with
Bruce?
Green (07/25/2016) 84.
PARKER
Not in the least.
LIZ
What’s wrong?
LAURA
We’re... worried about him. I was
hoping we’d be able to talk to
Alison.
LIZ
She’s... not here. How much has
Bruce told you about Alison?
LAURA
Not a lot. He said things were
complicated between them, but that
they still talk all the time.
LIZ
Oh... are you sure he said that?
LAURA
Yeah.
LIZ
Have you actually heard him talking
to her?
LAURA
He was on the phone with her the
other day.
LIZ
I think maybe I should talk to him. *
LAURA
Please don’t! He doesn’t know we’re
here. We really would like to...
help him.
LIZ
Then you need to tell me exactly *
what’s going on. *
LAURA
Did he ever get... violent with *
Alison? *
Green (07/25/2016) 85.
LIZ
No, Bruce was always good to her. *
He was a nice guy. A little quiet, *
I guess, but Alison really loved *
him. *
PARKER
Is that her?
LIZ
Yeah. That’s Ali.
Liz and Laura get up and walk towards the picture. It’s
ALISON and Bruce at prom. Alison is wearing the same blue
dress that Laura wore to the fundraiser. *
LIZ (CONT’D)
She looks like you a little bit. I
guess Bruce has a type.
LAURA
Is she coming home soon?
LIZ
I don’t know who Bruce is talking
to, but Alison died almost four
years ago.
PARKER
Shut. Up. How?
LAURA
Parker?
LIZ
No, it’s fine. It was a car
accident. Bruce took it really *
hard. He’s always blamed himself. *
LAURA
Uh... we have to go.
Green (07/25/2016) 86.
LIZ
Okay. I mean, is there anything I
can do to help? If Bruce is in *
trouble... or... *
LAURA
No. Thank you, though.
Parker and Laura hurry to the front door as Liz stands there,
beyond confused.
LIZ
Well... bye. I guess.
Bruce is back out on his boat, once again chumming the water.
He stares out at the blood trail he’s leaving in the water as
he starts to squint as if he has a bad headache.
FLASH TO:
Bruce and ALISON speed down the road in their prom attire.
The song that Bruce keeps playing is coming out of the car
radio. Alison wears the exact necklace Bruce gave Laura. *
BRUCE
I can’t believe you’re doing this
to me. Tonight.
ALISON
It’s not going to work when we
graduate. I don’t want to end it,
but it’s for the best. We have to
move on.
BRUCE
But you’re my everything.
BACK TO:
FLASH TO:
Green (07/25/2016) 87.
ALISON
Bruce, slow down!
BRUCE
I can’t live without you. I won’t
live without you.
BACK TO:
ALISON
(on voicemail)
Hey, babe! It’s Ali. I miss you.
Call me back, okay? I want to see
you soon.
Bruce puts his phone away, and pulls another one of his
pocket. The wallpaper on it shows us that it’s Nick’s phone.
He hits the command button.
BRUCE
(to the phone)
Find Laura.
PHONE VOICE
Finding Laura.
As the GPS app opens up, Bruce can see that she’s home. He
heads for the wheel, but stops when he notices the SHARK FIN
pop out of the water not far from him.
It’s mere inches away when Bruce aims the spear gun, but at
the last moment, he pauses and retracts the weapon. He
watches the shark as it swims right by.
SANDY
Bruce. Hey, hon. Is everything
okay?
BRUCE
Laura said you were working *
tonight.
SANDY
Nope. First night off in over a *
week. Lucky me, huh?
BRUCE
I she here? I’ve been trying to
call her phone.
SANDY
No. She forgot her phone charging
in the kitchen. I honestly don’t
know where she went off to.
BRUCE
(low, to himself)
I told you not to ask her out.
She’s no good.
SANDY
Bruce, you look a little flushed.
Are you feeling all right?
BRUCE
No, I AM NOT FEELING ALL RIGHT!
SANDY
I think you should go now.
BRUCE
Be a dear, and tell Laura I stopped
by, okay?
SANDY
Sure.
Bruce sits in his car with his lights out a few houses down
from Laura’s. He watches as Parker’s car pulls up in front of
the house. Laura gets out, and Parker comes out of the
driver’s side.
Bruce can see them exchange a few words before leaning in and
hugging each other. He tightens his grip on the steering
wheel as Laura heads towards the front door. *
Bruce stalks down the hallway with the now bent box in one
hand. He spots Laura walking away from her locker amongst the
crowd of students. He quickens his pace to catch up with her.
He grabs hold of Laura’s arm and pulls towards the JANITOR’S
CLOSET.
LAURA
Bruce!?!
Bruce pushes Laura into the closet with force and locks the
deadbolt behind him. Laura immediately tries to push through
him to the door, but he drops the box and holds her in place
with force.
90.
BRUCE
Did you think you could just sleep
with another guy behind my back and
I wouldn’t care!?
LAURA
What the hell are you talking
about!?!
BRUCE
I saw you with Parker. I can’t
believe you’d cheat on me like
that!
LAURA
Parker is just my friend! And even
if he was more, it’s none of your
business! We are NOT dating, Bruce!
My personal life is none of your
business!
BRUCE
I should have listened to Alison.
She told me you were trouble.
LAURA
Alison’s dead, Bruce!
BRUCE
SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! You
don’t know anything about her! You
take for granted everything I’ve
given you! I saved you! I’m in
charge of your life now! I decide
what you do!
BRUCE (CONT’D)
I’m taking you out to dinner
tomorrow night. And we’re going to
have a good time.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
You understand me?
BRUCE (CONT’D)
I’ll pick you up at 8. You choose
the place.
Bruce gives her a wink then unlocks the door, and leaves
Laura alone in the closet. She lets out the breath and tears
she’s been holding back.
The students file out of the school for the day. Among them
is Parker. Laura quickly grabs hold of him.
LAURA
I need your help. What are you
doing tomorrow?
Laura enters her room and changes into her sleep wear. A POV
from inside her opened closet watches from behind the clothes
as she crawls into bed.
Laura wakes up, and as she stands up, she notices the framed
portrait of Nick has fallen on the floor again, but this time
the glass is smashed.
LAURA
Dammit.
Laura rises up and reaches for her neck. She’s wearing the
necklace from Bruce.
Laura sits at her vanity, once again in the blue dress. She
puts the finishing touches on her hair, which now looks
almost identical to how Alison’s hair was in the prom
picture. When she’s done, she places the necklace around her
neck and clasps it.
It’s the same restaurant that Parker works at. Laura and
Bruce sit at a small table across from each other, going over
the menu. Laura is holding back her nerves as Bruce looks
happy and comfortable. He puts down his menu and looks at
her.
BRUCE
God, you’re beautiful, Ali.
LAURA
Thank you...
BRUCE
Did I tell you I’m still looking
for the shark? No sign of it yet,
but I’m not going to give up.
LAURA
You really don’t have to do that.
I’m sure it’s long gone by now.
BRUCE
Shark’s are territorial. You have *
to admire their tenacity. *
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
I’ll find it. The whole town is
counting on me. I have to give them
that headline and show them I’m
more than just Richard Kane’s son.
LAURA
I always thought you were more than
that.
93.
BRUCE
I know you did. From the moment you
looked at me when I pulled you out
of the water, I knew it.
Parker puts his tray down on the table and sneaks behind the
wall leading to the bathrooms. He pulls his phone out and
turns the video camera on, poking around the corner.
LAURA
I thought about what you said about
Bre. How best friends don’t fight.
BRUCE
Really?
LAURA
Yeah. You were absolutely right. I
can’t have people like that in my
life.
BRUCE
I’m glad you’re realizing that.
LAURA
I wanted to say thank you. For what
you did to her. I know you were
looking out for me.
BRUCE
Hey. You’re welcome. If anyone else
tries treating you badly, I’ll take
care of them.
MANAGER
Parker, what do you think you’re
doing? Get back to work!
Bruce looks around and sees Parker standing a few feet behind
him with his phone still in his hand, recording.
PARKER
I... uh...
Green (07/25/2016) 94.
BRUCE
Laura, what’s going on?
LAURA
(to Parker)
Did you get it?
Parker nods his head as he quickly picks his tray up and gets
back to work.
BRUCE
You recorded me?
LAURA
It’s over, Bruce. Leave me and my *
friends alone and stay the hell out *
of my house! *
Laura takes the necklace off and throws it down on the table.
LAURA (CONT’D)
You understand me? *
LAURA (CONT’D)
Send me the video.
PARKER
I’ll pick you up when I’m out. *
(to Bruce, gloating) *
The cops will listen to her now, *
Mr. Kane. *
Laura walks out the front door to the GARBAGE CANS in the
driveway. She opens the lid and tosses the dress in. Before
heading back inside, she closes the lid, but a piece of the
dress spills out.
Laura closes the door as she enters, and locks the deadbolt
and the chain lock.
Laura walks into the dining room and turns the light on, it’s *
empty. However, she notices the curtain billowing from an
open window. She hears the footsteps again before closing the *
window shut and latching the lock.
LAURA
Chloe?
LAURA (CONT’D)
Chloe!?! Chloe, where are you!?!
CHLOE
Why are you yelling?
LAURA
It’s nothing. Let’s get you back to
bed.
She heads to the window and looks out to see Parker’s car in
the driveway. The horn goes off again, followed immediately
by a text alert from Parker. It simply reads, “Here,” and is
followed by a message that her battery is almost dead.
She can see the silhouette of him sitting in the front seat
and begins walking over towards the car. She passes the
garbage cans, and unbeknownst to her, the lid is now open,
and the dress is missing.
LAURA
Parker?
Still no movement from him inside. She opens the door and
gasps in horror at the sight. Parker sits there lifeless in
the front seat of the car with a clear plastic bag wrapped *
around his face. His mouth is agape in a silent scream. *
Laura rushes inside and slams the door shut behind her, *
locking both locks. We FOLLOW her as she rushes through the *
empty house and into the kitchen.
There, she grabs for her phone, only to discover that the
front screen as been SMASHED. There’s no life left in it.
Laura stares at it in disbelief and the realization that
she’s not alone in the house hits her.
LAURA
Chloe...
Laura open a drawer and pulls out a KNIFE. She holds it up,
ready to stab at any movement, as she makes her way into the
living room.
Green (07/25/2016) 98.
BRUCE
Surprise!
LAURA
(trying to keep it
together)
You’re not supposed to be here,
Bruce.
BRUCE
I’ve come to forgive you, Ali. I
don’t care what happened with
Parker. We can move on from this.
LAURA
Don’t come any further!
BRUCE
Awe, baby. I’m giving you another
chance! Put the knife down. I know
you’d never hurt me.
Bruce reaches for the knife and Laura quickly pulls her hands
back from his and stabs the knife into his leg, causing Bruce
to SCREAM in pain. He quickly rips it out and throws it on *
the ground. *
Bruce turns the corner into the kitchen, only to have Laura
waiting for him with a chair being held legs out. She rushes
at him and drives the chair into his stomach, knocking him
down on the ground.
Laura quickly grabs ANOTHER KNIFE out of the open drawer and
jumps on top of him, holding it at his neck.
LAURA
Don’t move!
Green (07/25/2016) 99.
BRUCE
Oh, Laura. It doesn’t end here.
Bruce quickly reaches for her stomach and digs his fingers in *
to where her shark wound is. Laura cries out in pain, *
doubling over as he digs his fingers into the wound. She *
rolls off of Bruce onto the floor. *
BRUCE
Come on, darling. Time to go
fishing.
The boat coasts through the sea as Laura is still tied and *
gagged, lying on the rear deck. The sound of the engine *
rumbles through her. *
She hears SPLASHING and twists her body towards the stern, *
trying to make out the source of the sound. *
There are lights on the side of the boat that show a few feet *
of the water, but beyond that, she can only see darkness
surrounding her. She sees the spear gun not far from her,
still loaded.
Bruce slings a scoop full of chum overhead and into the water *
behind the boat. *
The engine cuts off and Bruce climbs down to lean over Laura, *
placing the disgusting chum bucket on the ground near her and *
pulling out her mouth gag. *
BRUCE
Not going to need this out here. No
one’s going to be able to find us.
Green (07/25/2016) 100.
Bruce grabs the chum and steps over her. He dips the scoop in *
and starts slinging it into the water around the boat. *
LAURA
Bruce, what are you doing!?!
BRUCE
You don’t appreciate what I’ve done
for you. I gave you back your life!
Rescued you from death!
LAURA
You know how grateful I am for
that!
BRUCE
WELL, YOU DON’T SHOW IT!
LAURA
I’m sorry about Alison, Bruce! I
really am. But I’m not her.
BRUCE
You’re right! Alison would never
take life for granted the way that
you do!
BRUCE (CONT’D)
There you is. I told you it was *
still around.
LAURA *
Bruce, no...
BRUCE
Awe, it’s a shame we can’t make *
headlines with this one. Killed by *
the same shark you were rescued *
from. They media would have eaten *
it up.
(beat)
No pun intended.
Green (07/25/2016) 101.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Well that wasn’t very ladylike! *
LAURA *
Don’t come any closer. *
She shuffles back into the boat’s cabin. Bruce slowly moves *
towards her. *
LAURA (CONT’D) *
Back up! *
He takes one small step back. As she frees her legs, he moves *
for her suddenly and she fires, hitting Bruce directly in the *
shoulder and sending him reeling backwards. *
BRUCE *
You stupid bitch! *
Laura slams the cabin door, sealing him outside behind the *
glass. *
BRUCE
(O.S.)
Laura!
She tears through the place and quickly finds the spears for
the gun. Laura attempts to reload it, but struggles with
getting it to lock into place. She presses it up against her
chest, but still can’t get it. *
Laura tosses the spear gun down, and starts going through the
room.
Green (07/25/2016) 102.
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Play nice, now. *
Laura lets out a muffled scream when she bumps into someone *
in the room. It takes her a brief moment to realize it’s a *
MANNEQUIN staring back at her. It wears the blue dress and
Alison’s necklace.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
(O.S.)
So you’ve met Alison.
Laura turns to the door and Bruce stands there with blood
dripping out of his severe spear wound. He stumbles towards
Laura and Alison. *
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Beautiful, isn’t she?
BRUCE (CONT’D)
(to himself)
I knew you wouldn’t leave me, baby.
(answering himself)
Of course not, Ali. You’re my
everything. I can’t live without
you.
He raises his hands and blocks the blow. She swings again and *
he catches it. *
BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Laura, you... *
Laura bursts out of the cabin and looks out into the water. *
The shark is still there, taunting her. Bruce comes racing *
towards her from inside and Laura takes off towards the bow *
of the boat. *
It’s a narrow walkway, and her feet slip with every step. She *
almost falls into the water, but catches herself, just as the *
dark silhouette passes by her side of the boat. *
As she reaches the bow, Bruce approaches from the other side. *
She darts for the front open window of the cabin and climbs *
in head first. *
Bruce races for her and gets there just as her feet are
sticking out. He grabs hold of one, but she’s able to kick
herself free. He lunges for the window just as Laura slams it *
shut.
BRUCE
YOU CAN’T HIDE ON A BOAT, LAURA!
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Don’t do it!
BRUCE (CONT’D)
Please! It’s all I have left of
her!
For a moment, Laura looks as if she feels bad for Bruce, but
that quickly washes away to anger as she tosses the necklace
into the water.
Green (07/25/2016) 104.
BRUCE (CONT’D)
NO!
Laura peers over the ledge of the railing, trying to make out
what’s going on below. Suddenly, Bruce pops out of the water.
His hand reaches up and latches onto Laura’s arm. She cries
out as she’s pulled over the railing and into the water with
Bruce.
She turns around to see its teeth heading straight for them. *
At the last moment, she takes her free hand and jabs it into
Bruce’s spear wound, causing him to wither in pain and let
her go.
She gasps for air as she tumbles onto the deck, before
getting back up to her feet. She looks down and can see the
red water illuminated by the lights around the boat. *
CHLOE
(O.S.)
Laura!
SANDY
I’m so sorry, Laura. I should have
listened to you about Bruce. I
should have trusted you.
LAURA
It’s okay, Mom. I’m sorry for what
I said about Dad. I didn’t mean it.
SANDY
I know you didn’t.
LAURA
I’m going to try to do better. I
promise.
SANDY
We both will, honey.
They hug and walks towards the ambulance with her mother and
sister.
THE END *
