HUNTER'S COVE

Written by

DRAFT 3.1
07/26/16
1 EXT. SHORELINE - DAY 1

Establishing shot - We fly over the ocean leading towards a

small, coastal town. Business and beautiful homes populate
the shore. A LARGE BOAT heads towards the docks. *

2 EXT. MARINA - MOMENTS LATER 2

The boat pulls into its slip in the busy marina. On the deck *
is BRUCE, 22, good-looking with an air of sophistication.

He secures the boat to the dock, but before he leaves, he

double checks the door leading into the cabin and we see *
there’s a PADLOCK on it.

3 EXT. TOWN STREET - DUSK 3

The sun begins to set over the quiet, suburban town. We see
the townsfolk take living on the shore to heart, with typical
sea shells and fishing paraphernalia adorning their yards and
the outside of the houses. *

4 EXT. SHORELINE - SUNSET 4

As the sun begins to set into the horizon, the water begins
to stir. For a fleeting moment, we catch a glimpse of what
appears to be a FIN break the surface of the water. It
vanishes as quickly as it appeared.

5 EXT. LAURA’S HOUSE - NIGHT 5

Well kept homes line the street. This isn’t exactly the
richest part of town, but still nice in a modest and simple
way. A car pulls into the driveway and parks.

SANDY, 40s, in nursing scrubs, steps out of the car, leaving *

the lights on, and looks at the house with a worried *
expression. She stares at the front door of the house, which *
is slightly ajar, gently swaying back and forth in the wind.

6 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - FOYER - SECONDS LATER 6

Sandy enters the house. It appears ominous and creepy as all

the lights are turned off and moonlight casts shadows
everywhere.

SANDY
Laura!? Chloe?!
Green (07/25/2016) 2.

Sandy vanishes into the darkness of the living room,

searching, then quickly appears again. She’s panicked and
takes off up the stairs.

SANDY (CONT’D)
Laura!?

7 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - CHLOE’S BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER 7

Sandy rushes into the room to see CHLOE, 10, asleep in her
bed. Relief washes over her, but it turns to anger as she
stares out of the bedroom window at a car parked across the
street.

8 INT./EXT. CAR/LAURA’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS 8

LAURA, 17, sits in the passenger side as NICK, her boyfriend,

is in the driver’s side. They passionately make out as music
plays on the radio.

NICK
You sure about out here?

LAURA
(kissing him between each
pause)
It’s a big. Free. Country.

Laura pulls Nick’s shirt off and is starting to pull up her

own, still making out with him, when her eyes go wide. Nick *
looks to see what she’s staring at and we see through the *
window that Sandy is marching towards the car. *

LAURA (CONT’D)
Kill me, please.

NICK
Rest in peace.

Nick tries to put his shirt back on as the passenger side *

door whips open to reveal Sandy staring at them, enraged. *

SANDY
Out of the car. NOW!

LAURA
Mom! You weren’t supposed to be *
home until later.
Green (07/25/2016) 3.

SANDY
Good thing I got out early. I could
only imagine what would have
happened if I didn’t.

LAURA
Nothing that already hasn’t.

Sandy looks at her daughter, hurt and infuriated. She points

to the house.

SANDY
Inside!

Laura rolls her eyes, but obeys her mother. Nick gets out of *
the car, looking as if he’s about to stand up to Sandy.

NICK
Sandy. Um... Mrs. Wilcox.

Sandy whips around and stares daggers into Nick.

SANDY
WHAT?

Nick is shrunken by Sandy’s presence.

NICK
You... uh... left your headlights
on.

SANDY
Go home, Nicholas.

NICK
Ah, yup.

He gives a quick wave to Laura as she heads in the house

before quickly hopping back into his car and taking off, as
Sandy turns her headlights off.

9 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - STAIRWAY/UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT 9

Sandy walks in and Laura is standing on the stairs, ready to

head up.

LAURA
Are you happy? You’ve embarrassed
me for life. Again.
4.

SANDY
Do you know how scared I was coming
home to the door being open and all
the lights off. I thought something
happened to you!

LAURA
Still in one piece.

SANDY
You’re supposed to be in here
watching your sister.

LAURA
Chloe’s been asleep for hours.

SANDY
That’s not the point.

LAURA
Would you rather I brought him
inside? I was trying to be
respectful.

Laura starts heading up the stairs to the second floor

hallway as her mother follows her.

SANDY
I don’t even think you know what
that word means anymore. Since
you’ve met him, you’ve done nothing
but slide down hill. Don’t think
the school didn’t call me about you
skipping class today.

LAURA
I had cramps.

SANDY
I’m serious, Laura. I don’t want
you hanging around him anymore. I
know a trouble maker when I see
one.

Laura stops in the hallway and turns to Sandy

LAURA
Did you ever think that maybe I’m
the bad influence on him? Of course
not, that would have to mean you
might have done something wrong.
5.

SANDY
I’m trying the best I can with you
girls. You know it hasn’t been
easy.

LAURA
Do me a favor, then. Stick to
scaring guys away in your own love
life. Not mine.

SANDY
Oh, that’s it. You’re grounded for
the weekend.

LAURA
You already said I could go out
with Bre! It’s my birthday!

SANDY
Well, I did all the work that day,
so you’re going to spend it here.
With me.

Laura’s younger sister, CHLOE, 10, opens the door to her room
and appears in the hallway.

CHLOE
Is Laura in trouble?

SANDY LAURA
Yes. No.

CHLOE (CONT’D)
(to Laura)
Good luck.

LAURA
Gee, thanks.

SANDY
Get back to bed, Chloe.

Chloe disappears back into her room and closes the door.
Sandy looks back to Laura only to see she’s no longer in the
hallway. The door to her room SLAMS.

Sandy storms to Laura’s door, ready to open it. Instead, she

catches her breath, collects herself and gently knocks on the
door.

SANDY (CONT’D)
Laura. Can you come back out,
please. We can talk about this.
Green (07/25/2016) 6.

10 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - SAME 10

Laura lays on her bed and puts her earbuds in, turning the
music on her phone up.

SANDY
(O.S.)
Laura?

Laura turns the volume up even higher.

11 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - SAME 11

Sandy still stands at the door and gives one more knock.

SANDY
(to herself)
I’m sorry.

12 INT. LAURA’S ROOM - DAY 12

Laura quietly sneaks around her room, getting ready to leave

the house. She puts a pair of shorts and a shirt over her
bathing suit and gives herself a once over in the mirror. She
stuffs a hoodie in her bag to take along. *

Her phone on her night stand, beside a PICTURE of her and *

Nick, starts the RING, breaking the quiet in the room. She *
rushes for it and turns off the ringer as she answers it. *

LAURA
(whispered)
Hey, babe. Are you there yet?
(beat)
Well, don’t take too long.
(beat)
What do you think? She freaked!
(beat)
All right. See you soon.

She checks her messages and notices one from Bre that says,
“Here.”

13 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - DAY 13

The door to Laura’s bedroom eases open as she peeks out the
door. The coast is clear so she heads towards the stairs as
quietly as possible.
Green (07/25/2016) 7.

As she heads down the staircase, the door to Chloe’s room

opens. She comes out and looks down the stairwell as Laura
heads out the door.

14 EXT./INT. LAURA’S HOUSE/BRE’S CAR - CONTINUOUS 14

Laura quietly closes the door behind her before running

across the yard to a car parked on the street. Sitting in the
driver’s side is Laura’s best friend, BRE.

Laura hurries into the passenger side. *

LAURA
Go! Go!

Bre obeys and takes off down the road.

15 EXT. MARINA - DAY 15

Laura and Bre walk from the parking lot down the docks.

They pass Bruce on the deck of his boat, washing down the *
side, listening to a slower melodic song.

LAURA
Well, hello, gorgeous.

BRE
I’ve never seen him around. Must be
a tourist.

LAURA
A rich one at that. Look at the
size of that boat. Go talk to him. *

BRE
No!

LAURA
Why not?

BRE
I don’t know. He’s... *
(thinking up an excuse) *
...old. *

LAURA
God, Bre. It’s not like he’s 30.
I’ll do it for you.

BRE
Laura, stop!
Green (07/25/2016) 8.

They’re almost passing directly in front of him now.

LAURA
Hey, sailor boy!

Bruce looks up as Laura hides behind a smaller boat. Bre is

beyond embarrassed, but finds it humorous at the same time.

BRE
Laura!

Bruce looks around, then points to himself.

LAURA
Say hi.

BRE
(to Bruce)
Hi. I’m Bre.

LAURA
(calling off towards
Bruce)
She’s single.

Bre turns bright red.

BRE
So, yeah. Me and my friend are
going to go now. So I can die.

Bruce smiles and lets out a little laugh as he turns back to

readying his boat. When Bruce vanishes from sight, Bre drags
Laura away.

BRE (CONT’D)
I hate you.

LAURA
Lies.

Suddenly, a pair of hands grab Bre from behind, causing her

to jump and yell out. They whip around to see PARKER, also
their age, standing behind them.

BRE
Dammit, Parker!

PARKER
Wow, have you been out in the sun
all morning, Bre?

She looks at her arms and shoulders, not seeing any color
difference.
9.

BRE
No.

PARKER
You must always look this hot,
then.

Bre and Laura share and eye roll as they continue down the
pier.

BRE
You did not.

PARKER
Oh, but I did.

LAURA
Where’s Nick?

PARKER
He’s not with you guys?

LAURA
No. He told me he was running late
because he was picking you up.

PARKER
Well, this is awkward.

Laura takes out her phone and tries dialing Nick, but his
voice mail picks up.

LAURA
You really don’t know where he is?

PARKER
Swear.

Laura holds down the home button on her phone and speaks into
it.

LAURA
Find Nick.

Her phone beeps and opens up a GPS APP. A dot representing

her and a dot representing Nick show up on her screen.

PHONE VOICE
Finding Nick.

PARKER
(with a fake gasp)
It’s sentient!
Green (07/25/2016) 10.

LAURA
(looking at the screen)
What the hell?

BRE
What?

Laura starts walking faster down the pier as Parker and Laura
exchange smiles as they follow Laura. She passes by a number
of larger boats and stops dead in her tracks with a shocked *
expression.

In front of her is Nick on a sleek speedboat, decorated with *

streamers and balloons.

BRE (CONT’D) PARKER

Surprise! Surprise!

Nicks steps off of the boat and hands Laura a bouquet of *

roses.

NICK
Happy birthday, babe.

LAURA
This is where you were all morning?

NICK
Guilty! Parker and Bre came down
early and helped me out.

Laura hugs Nick and takes the roses.

LAURA
That’s really sweet of you.

She then gives Bre and Parker hugs. When she pulls away,
Parker tries to go in for a hug from Bre who puts her hand up
in his way.

PARKER
Uh huh.

NICK
I’ve got a secret.

LAURA
What’s that?

NICK
You’re cute.
Green (07/25/2016) 11.

Laura smiles and kisses Nick on the lips. He holds her hand
and leads her up onto the boat.

BRE
Have fun, guys.

LAURA
You’re not coming?

PARKER
It’s all you two, today.

Nick unties the boat from the pier and it starts to drift off
into the water. Laura waves at Parker and Bre as they head
out to sea.

Parker puts one arm around Bre’s shoulder as they both wave
back, but Bre simply looks at the hand, then walks away,
leaving Parker by himself.

16 EXT. OCEAN - LATER 16

Nick’s boat glides through the water. Laura has her arms *
around him as he mans the controls. They laugh as the water *
whips up from ocean, splashing them in the face.

17 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - DAY 17

Sandy is cooking eggs on the stove while Chloe eats a bowl of

cereal at the table.

SANDY
Can you go see if your sister plans *
on coming out of her cave today?

CHLOE
Laura’s not here.

SANDY
What do you mean?

CHLOE
She left this morning. *

SANDY
Where’d she go?

Chloe just shrugs her shoulders. A frustrated Sandy smacks

the spatula down on the counter and picks her phone up,
dialing Laura.
Green (07/25/2016) 12.

18 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 18

The boat is anchored as Nick is in the water. Laura is in the

boat with a SKETCHBOOK, drawing a portrait of Nick. She looks *
down at her phone as it rings and sees that it’s her mother.

Nick climbs the ladder back into the boat and slips, letting *
out a small exclamation of pain.

LAURA
Are you okay?

Nick looks down at his foot. *

NICK
It’s fine. Just a little cut.

IN THE WATER. Nick dips his leg back into the water and *
swishes it back and forth, letting the blood wash off. *

Laura looks at land very far off in the distance. *

LAURA *
Nick, where are we? *

NICK *
What do you mean? *

LAURA *
We’re a little further out than *
usual. *

NICK *
Nah, we’re fine. The Marina’s right *
over there. *

He points to a stretch of land that they can make out over *

the horizon. *

LAURA *
I’m pretty sure that’s Long Island. *

NICK *
Huh. You think? *

LAURA *
Did you get us lost? *

NICK *
No! Not on purpose... *

Nick looks out at the land for a moment. *

Green (07/25/2016) 13.

NICK (CONT’D) *
I think this is right. *

LAURA *
Are you sure? *

NICK *
You didn’t want to head home *
anytime soon anyway, did you? *

LAURA *
Not at all! *

Laura leans in and kisses him as he steps back on the boat. *

He pulls the sketch from her hands and examines it, before *
handing it back. *

NICK
Nice! Who’s it supposed to be?

LAURA
Hey!

NICK
I’m just kidding! Hurry up and jump
in!

Laura puts the portrait down, and as soon as she rises up,
Nick playfully picks her up and tosses her in the water. She
lets out a laugh as he jumps in right after her.

From deep below them, we see the two splash into the water *
near the silhouette of the boat. *

19 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - DAY 19 *

Sandy is on the phone. *

SANDY
Bre, I know she’s with him. Just
give me his number.
(beat)
Fine. Put your mother on the phone,
then.
(beat)
That’s what I thought.

20 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 20

Laura and Nick hug each other in the water and share a kiss, *
not too far from the boat. *
Green (07/25/2016) 14.

LAURA *
I’m really going to miss you next *
year. *

NICK *
Laura, don’t bring it up. *

LAURA *
I know, but it’s going to happen *
either way. You’re going across the *
country, and I’m not. *

NICK *
We can make it work. *

LAURA *
Come on, Nicky, I’m not delusional. *
It’s high school. It’s not made to *
last forever and I’m okay with *
that. *

Nick looks hurt. *

NICK *
Are you breaking up with me? *

LAURA *
No! Not even. I’m just thinking *
realistically. Whatever happens *
this fall, I want you to know how *
important you are to me. *

A smile now appears on Nick’s face. *

NICK *
Hey, guess what? *

LAURA *
What? *

NICK *
Chicken butt! *

Nick splashes water in her face, causing her to laugh and *

jokingly push him away. *

LAURA *
Always such the romantic. *

NICK *
You love it. *
Green (07/25/2016) 15.

They embrace once again just as a loud and abrasive RING TONE *
starts blaring from Nick’s phone, causing Laura to roll her *
eyes. She pulls away, about to swim back to the boat. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
Just ignore it. *

LAURA *
Can YOU ignore that? I’m going to *
turn it off. *

Laura swims to the boat and steps onto the ladder, reaching *
for the phone. While her back is turned to Nick, we see the *
unmistakable sight of a SHARK’S FIN break the surface behind *
Nick. *

Nick, sensing something, turns around just after the fin has *
vanished into the water. He turns his attention back to *
Laura. *

NICK
Who is it? *

Laura looks down at the phone and immediately recognizes the

number.

LAURA
Ugh. It’s my mother.

NICK
Do you want to pick it up? *

Laura shoots him a condescending “really?” glare. He gets it.

NICK (CONT’D)
Never mind. *

21 EXT. LAURA’S HOUSE - BACK PORCH - DAY 21

Sandy leans against the railing of the back porch. She

nervously taps her hand as she looks out into the distance.

The door to the living room opens behind her and she quickly
whips around.

SANDY
Laura!?

Chloe stands there and Sandy quickly hides a hand behind her *
back. *

CHLOE
She’s still not back.
Green (07/25/2016) 16.

CHLOE (CONT’D)
Why don’t you call Daddy? Maybe
he’s heard from her.

SANDY
I don’t want to bother your father.
I’m sure he’s busy with Jenny. *

CHLOE
Jessie.

SANDY
All the same.

22 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 22

Laura silences Nick’s phone before jumping back into the *

water and swimming back out towards him. He reaches out for *
her, but she swims right past. *

NICK *
You know she’s gonna call the coast *
guard if you’re not back soon. *

OVERHEAD. He swims after her. A SILHOUETTE of a shark follows *

deep below them. *

Laura stops, having put some distance between herself and the *
boat. *

LAURA *
Yeah, well, they’ll never be able *
to find us thanks to your brilliant *
navigating. *

Nick catches up to her, closing in for a kiss. *

NICK *
I thought nowhere near home was *
just where you wanted to be. *

They laugh. Nick goes in for a second kiss, when he jolts *

back. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
Ow. Hey. No need to kick me. *

Laura looks confused. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
What’s wrong? *

He jolts again. *
Green (07/25/2016) 17.

NICK (CONT’D) *
Ow! *

Laura looks worried for a moment and then gives him a shove. *

LAURA *
You’re such a jerk, sometimes. *
Don’t joke about that. *

Nick’s face gets very serious and he starts spinning around, *

looking down through the water. *

NICK *
It’s probably just a big fish. *

Laura starts frantically looking around as well. *

LAURA *
You’re serious? Oh my god! *

NICK *
Don’t worry. Even if it is a shark, *
they basically don’t ever bite *
people. Unless they think you’re a *
seal or something. *

Laura sees the shark moving through the water and lets out a *
cry, backing into Nick, who grabs ahold of her. *

LAURA *
I see it! It is a shark. Oh my god! *

NICK *
Hey! Calm down! Calm down. *

LAURA *
We gotta get back to the boat! *

NICK *
STOP! *

He stares her in the eyes and calms her. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
Don’t do anything to provoke it. *
Just stay calm.

She slows her breathing. *

LAURA *
I’m calm. *
Green (07/25/2016) 18.

NICK *
I just saw this on TV. Sharks spot *
a wounded fish and they stalk it *
until it’s too weak to get away. If *
we act calm and strong, it’ll leave *
us alone. *

Laura laughs nervously. *

LAURA
You’re the one who’s shaking.

NICK *
Just don’t let it get a taste and *
you’ll be fine. *

LAURA *
A taste! *

Nick’s face goes white as he sees the fin splash through the *
surface behind Laura. It’s BIG. *

She looks behind her off of his eyes, but it’s gone. *

NICK *
Let’s get back to the boat. *

They start to swim slowly towards the boat. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
If you see it, kick it in the nose. *

They move towards the boat, staying close together. *

LAURA *
I see it! *

They right themselves and rotate, trying to track it through *

the water as it swirls around beneath them. *

NICK *
I see it too. *

In swims underneath them and they scramble to turn around, *

but lose it. *

LAURA *
Where’d it go? *

NICK *
I don’t know. *
Green (07/25/2016) 19.

They’re both still for a brief moment, practically holding

their breaths. Laura suddenly lets out a CRY as she jolts *
sideways. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
LAURA! *

Her eyes widen as she sees the shark swimming away from her. *

The water around her begins to get cloudy with blood, as she *
grasps her side in pain. *

NICK (CONT’D)
Laura! Are you okay!?

LAURA
It bit me!

Nick reaches Laura and holds onto her.

NICK
How bad?

LAURA
I don’t know.

Nick ducks under the surface for a few seconds, then pops
back up, blinking his eyes furiously from the salt water. *

NICK
You’re going to be okay. It grazed *
you. We’ll get back to the boat, *
then put some pressure on it. Can
you swim?

LAURA
Yeah. I think so.

Nick holds onto her as he guides them towards the distant *

boat. The fin briefly surfaces between them and the boat. *

LAURA (CONT’D)
What do we do!?

NICK
I don’t know!

Nick spots the shark approaching and desperately kicks at it. *

NICK (CONT’D) *
Keep moving! *

UNERNEATH THE WATER, the shark’s POV heads straight for their
dangling legs.
Green (07/25/2016) 20.

Suddenly, Nick is pulled down.

Laura notices that Nick is gone. *

LAURA *
Nick? *

UNDERNEATH THE WATER, Nick flails back towards the surface, *

breaking through. *

NICK
Go now!

LAURA *
Are you ok? *

Nick and Laura swim towards the boat as fast as they can. *
Suddenly, Nick vanishes and Laura stops. *

LAURA (CONT’D)
Nick!

On his boat, a pair of binoculars reflect the ocean. They *

drop away, revealing a horrified Bruce, who scrambles to the *
controls. *

Nick bursts to the surface with a cloud of blood billowing *

around him. *

NICK
Keep going, Laura!

LAURA
What?

NICK
Turn around and keep going! Don't
you dare watch!

Tears start to stream down Laura's face.

LAURA
No!

NICK
Turn around!

A crying Laura does what Nick asks of her and turns away, *
trying to swim towards the boat.

Nick searches around him for a brief second, and with the *
shark not in sight, starts swimming towards Laura once again. *
Green (07/25/2016) 21.

Laura, hearing him splashing, turns around to see him getting

closer to her. A relieved expression crosses her face.

Nick swims towards us as the camera briefly dips below the *

surface, revealing our first good look at the SHARK. It’s *
massive mouth opens as it closes in on Nick. *

Nick disappears and Laura’s relief vanishes. *

Nick’s hand breaks the surface and then disappears into *

surprisingly calm water. *

Laura looks on in shock, tears streaming down her face. *

LAURA
No... *

She can’t look away, but there’s nothing to see but a circle *
of red. *

The sound of an ENGINE wells up through her grief as Bruce’s *

boat bears down on her. *

BRUCE (O.S.) *
I've got you! *

His voice breaks her trance and she looks up at him. *

LAURA
Get me out of here! *

AERIAL VIEW - Bruce pulls Laura up with all of his strength *

onto the rear diving platform of his boat. *

The shark passes beneath as Laura collapses into Bruce's *

arms, panting for breath and crying.

BRUCE
You're going to be okay.

Laura continues to clutch on to Bruce and he holds her back,

tightly. She looks up at him and he’s immediately struck by
her eyes. He stares back at her intensely.

A blanket sits not far from them. Bruce tries to place her *
down on the deck to grab it, but she clamors to him, not *
wanting to let go. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Okay... okay. *
Green (07/25/2016) 22.

Instead of letting go, Bruce reaches his hand as far as it *

can go, grabbing the blanket by the edges and pulling it *
over. He presses it against her wound and it slowly turns red *
with blood as she weeps into his chest. *

23 EXT. MARINA - DAY 23 *

Sandy's car pulls up to see that a media circus has invaded

the docks, in addition to POLICE and an AMBULANCE. *

A reporter, CASEY HEMPEL, checks her hair in a pocket mirror. *

Her look screams small town ambition. *

Sandy rushes out of the car toward the ambulance. Laura is on *

the stretcher being wheeled by EMTs towards the opened back
doors.

SANDY
Laura! *

Tears appear in Sandy's eyes as they load the stretches into *

the back of the ambulance. *

SANDY (CONT’D)
(to the EMT)
I'm her mother.

The EMT nods and lets her in the back. As they ready to load
Laura in, she catches a glimpse of Bruce finishing up talking
to a POLICE OFFICER. They make eye contact, and she mouthes *
“thank you” to him as she climbs in. *

The doors to the ambulance close. Bruce stands there, now by *

himself, watching the ambulance depart. *

CASEY *
(O.S.)
Mr. Kane?

Bruce turns to see Casey and a CAMERA MAN heading towards *

him. A LIGHT from their CAMERA nearly blinds Bruce as a *
microphone appears in front of his face.

CASEY (CONT’D) *
Do you mind if I ask you a few *
questions about what happened *
today? *

BRUCE
Um, sure.

Casey jumps in front of the camera beside Bruce. *

Green (07/25/2016) 23.

CASEY *
(to the camera man) *
Ready? *

The camera man gives her a thumbs up. *

CASEY (CONT’D) *
This is Casey Jean Hempel reporting *
with an EXCLUSIVE breaking *
interview with Bruce Kane, son of *
Representative Richard Kane. Tell *
us, Bruce, how did you come across *
the girl? *

BRUCE
I just... heard her yelling, and
was close enough to get there in
time.

CASEY *
She’s alive today thanks to you. *
How does it feel to be a hero?

BRUCE
A hero?

24 EXT. MARINA - EVENING 24 *

Bruce walks down the pier by himself. The entire marina is

dead without another person in sight. He approaches Nick’s *
boat and bends down to hop on.

It’s exactly how Nick and Laura left it. Deflating balloons
and ripped streamers are still there from the birthday
decorations.

Bruce begins to look around the boat, poking through the

personal belongings that Nick and Laura left behind. He picks
up Nick’s phone and immediately notices a number of missed
calls and text messages. He swipes it to open it to reveal of
picture of him and Laura kissing as the wallpaper.

Bruce places Nick’s phone down and starts going through

Laura’s belongings. He picks up her hoodie sweatshirt and
places his arm in the sleeve. He holds his sleeved arm up to
his chest, and grabs it with his other arm, almost as if
hugging himself.

He pulls his hand out of the sleeve and picks up her

cellphone, immediately opening it and going to her PHOTOS.
There, he finds a number of selfies Laura has taken by
herself, as well as with her friends and Nick.
Green (07/25/2016) 24.

He pulls up one that’s just of her and zooms in on it,

letting her face take of the entire screen of the phone. He
stares at it for an uncomfortably long time as a smile
crosses his face. His expression is pure happiness.

25 INT. HOSPITAL - LAURA’S ROOM - DAY 25

Laura wakes up in the hospital bed to see a sleeping Sandy

and Chloe right beside her. She briefly looks around the room
confused, then feels her bandaged wound as reality starts to *
settle in. *

She sees that Chloe is awake. They exchange a smile. *

LAURA
Have you guys been here all night?

CHLOE
Mommy was. Mrs. Morgan brought me
this morning. I’m sorry about Nick. *

Tears start to fill up Laura’s eyes. She’s seconds away from

crying.

LAURA
Mom told you?

CHLOE
(shaking her head)
It’s on every channel. *

There’s a KNOCK on the door. Sandy is startled awake and

smiles when she sees that Laura is up. Everyone’s attention
goes to the door to see Bruce standing there with a bag in
his hand.

LAURA
Sailor boy?

BRUCE
I’m sorry. Is this a bad time?

Laura wipes the tears away from her eyes.

LAURA
No. Not at all. Come in.

Sandy immediately gets up and gives Bruce a hug.

SANDY
There he is. The man of the hour.

Bruce sheepishly smiles and begins to blush.

Green (07/25/2016) 25.

Laura notices a Hospital ID badge around his neck.

LAURA
Do you work here?

BRUCE
Oh, no. Well, not technically.

SANDY
Bruce is one of our volunteers down *
at the Pediatric Cancer Center.

LAURA
Really?

BRUCE
I just play video games with the *
kids sometimes. It’s just until I
go for my Masters in the fall.

LAURA
I’d never seen you before, so I
just thought you were from out of
town.

BRUCE
Yes and no. I grew up here, but
went to military school, then
college in New York. I just got
back in town a few weeks ago.

SANDY
Honey, Bruce’s father is Richard
Kane. He’s a State Representative.

Laura still looks lost.

LAURA
Sorry. Politics aren’t really my
thing.

BRUCE
Don’t be sorry. It’s actually a
relief to meet someone out of his
shadow.

SANDY
Well, you can tell him he has my
vote for re-election!

Sandy places her hand on him with a smile, and almost

subconsciously flutters her eyebrows.
26.

CHLOE
Mommy. Is there something in your
eye?

SANDY
What? No.

Bruce flashes her his perfect smile to Laura and winks,

knowing exactly what Chloe’s talking about.

BRUCE
I wanted to bring you this.

He hands Laura the bag in his hand and she begins pulling out
her belongings, including her sweatshirt, cell phone, and
sketchbook.

LAURA
Where’d you get them?

BRUCE
(hesitant)
They, uh, towed the boat in last
night...

The tears finally come out of Laura’s eyes and she breaks
down.

SANDY
Oh, honey...

Bruce puts his arm around her to comfort her, leading to her
hugging onto him as she lets her emotions out.

26 INT. HOSPITAL - LAURA’S ROOM - NIGHT 26

Laura lies on the bed, fast asleep. The door CREAKS open,
letting a sliver of light cut through the darkness of the
room. Bruce stands silhouetted in the doorway, looking at
Laura from afar. He checks the hallway to make sure it’s
empty, then shuts the door behind him, locking it. He heads
towards the bed.

Bruce bends down beside the bed and touches Laura’s hand.
When he notices that she’s still deep in sleep, he lightly
picks up her hand and rubs it against his cheek, as he closes
his eyes and takes it in for a moment. It’s a moment of pure
pleasure for him.

BRUCE
(whispered)
I’ve missed you.
Green (07/25/2016) 27.

He places her hand back down before leaning over Laura. His
lips are right above her, as if he’s going in for a kiss, but *
he moves further up and gently kisses her forehead.

NEWS MONTAGE: The following are cut in quick succession.

27 EXT. MARINA - DAY 27

Bruce stands by the seawall with a microphone in his face.

BRUCE
I heard her yelling. I saw the
blood in the water. It was...
traumatizing, but I knew I had to
save her.

ready to be released. I owe him
everything.

31 EXT. MARINA/BRUCE’S BOAT - DAY 31

Bruce sits on the boat in another perfectly staged FRAME.

BRUCE
It feels great to know that I was
able to save someone’s life. Truly.
My only regret is that I couldn’t
get there sooner.
(Bruce begins to become
emotional)
Maybe then, we’d be celebrating two
saved lives.

33 INT. HOSPITAL - LAURA’S ROOM - DAY 33

Laura lies in the bed with the TV REMOTE in her hand and Bre
sitting beside her. She tosses the remote aside.

LAURA
Can’t they find something else to
talk about?

BRE
It’s a small town, Laura. Your TV *
movie writes itself. *

LAURA
How’s Parker? I’ve been trying to
text him all day.

BRE
He’s... good. I think?

LAURA
You suck at lying.

BRE
Fine. He’d kill me if I told you,
but he kind of broke down when he
heard. Like, full-on ugly cry. *

BRUCE
(O.S.)
Hey there.

Laura and Bre turn to the door to see Bruce standing there.
Bre immediately starts nonchalantly fixing her hair.

LAURA
Hi, Bruce.

Bruce walks in with CANDIES in his hand, and hands them over *
to Laura.

BRUCE
I figured you were sick of the
hospital food, so I wrestled a
little something away from the
kids.

LAURA
That’s really sweet. Thank you.
Green (07/25/2016) 30.

BRUCE
No problem. You look really good
today. *

She smiles as Bruce turns to Bre.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
It’s Bre, right?

BRE
(nervous)
Yup. Bre. Or Breanne. Or, like,
whatever you want.

Bre lets out an embarrassingly nervous Brittany Murphy laugh.

BRE (CONT’D)
I’m sorry. I just feel like I
should be asking for your autograph
or something.

BRUCE
(laughing)
Please don’t. I’m getting sick of
seeing my own face on TV, to be
honest.

BRE
At least it’s a good face!
(beat)
Wow. I’m going to shut up now.

Bruce smiles at her before turning to Laura.

BRUCE
Sandy said you’re heading home.

LAURA
Yeah. The doctors gave me the all
clear this morning. Just waiting
for her to finish her shift.

BRUCE
Good for you. Well, my break’s
almost over. Hopefully I’ll see you
around.

LAURA
Okay.

Bruce nods to Bre, who shoots him a wave as he leaves the

room. When she’s sure he’s out of ear shot, Bre gives Laura a
probing look.
Green (07/25/2016) 31.

LAURA (CONT’D)
What?

Bre gives her a “you know” look.

LAURA (CONT’D)
Stop. Not even.

BRE
Whatever you say.

34 EXT. LAURA’S HOUSE - DAY 34

Sandy’s car pulls into the driveway of the house with Laura
in the front seat. Sandy gets out of the car and runs over to *
Laura’s side and opens her door, extending her hand to help
her out.

LAURA
I think I can walk, mom.

SANDY
I just don’t want you to pull a
stitch or something.

LAURA
I got it.

Chloe comes running over from across the street. She gives
Laura a hug.

CHLOE
Laura!

Laura has a pained expression on her face the moment Chloe

attaches herself to her.

LAURA
Owww!

A terrified Chloe quickly retracts.

CHLOE
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to!

The pain on Laura’s face quickly switches to a smile.

LAURA
Gotcha.

They share a laugh as they head inside.

32.

35 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - LATER 35

Laura walks into her room and looks around. At first glance,
it’s exactly how she left it the morning of the attack.
However, she quickly turns her attention to the night stand
and notices the picture of her and Nick is now missing.

36 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER 36

Laura comes storming into the kitchen to find Sandy.

LAURA
What did you do with Nick’s
picture?

SANDY
I just... I didn’t want you to get
upset.

LAURA
I know you didn’t like him, but
this is a new low.

Sandy pulls open the JUNK DRAWER in the kitchen and takes out
the framed picture. Laura snatches it from her.

SANDY
It has nothing to do with him
personally! I just wanted you to...

LAURA
What? Forget? I will never forget
what happened. And I don’t want to
forget him.

Laura storms out of the room.

37 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - NIGHT 37

Laura wakes in the room with her door slightly ajar. She can
hear the muffled sounds of her mother’s voice downstairs.

38 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM/FOYER - MOMENTS LATER 38

Sandy paces the living room while on the phone. She looks
upset.

SANDY
(on the phone)
You’re a real piece of work, you
know that?
Green (07/25/2016) 33.

SANDY (CONT'D)
(beat)
Your daughter almost died! How do
you not comprehend that?
(beat)
No. I don’t want to hear your
excuses. You couldn’t even call her
on her birthday.

Laura listens from the stairs.

SANDY (CONT’D)
(on the phone)
No. I’m not going to tell her. You
should be here to do it yourself.
(beat)
You know what? Forget about it.

An upset Sandy ends the call and takes a moment before

heading towards the stairs. She’s startled when she finds
Laura standing right in front of her.

SANDY (CONT’D)
Laura!

LAURA
How’s dad?

A hurt expression crosses Sandy’s face.

SANDY
I’m sorry, honey.

LAURA
It’s fine. You know, whatever.
Screw him, right?

Laura turns and heads back up the stairs.

39 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - DAY 39

Laura stands in front of her mirror in her bra and a pair of

pants. She holds a shirt in her hand, but before putting it *
on, takes a look at the bandages on her abdomen. She pulls
the tape off her skin and slowly reveals the stitched up
wound.

She reaches down and lightly touches it, running her hand
over the stitches, and turning her body to see the extent of
it. It’s a small wound, which appears to already be healing.

A KNOCK at the door interrupts her and she quickly starts to

reapply the bandage.
34.

SANDY
(O.S.)
Laura? Can I come in?

LAURA
One second!

Laura quickly pulls her shirt on and pats it down, giving

herself one more look in the mirror before opening the door.

Sandy stands in the doorway with Bruce behind her.

SANDY
Look who came to say hi!

Sandy looks at Laura with a look that’s clearly encouraging

her to agree, but Laura is already smiling.

BRUCE
How are you feeling?

LAURA
Okay. Considering.

SANDY
Can I get you guys anything?

Laura shakes her head.

BRUCE
I would love a glass of water, if
it’s not too much to ask for.

SANDY
Of course not! I’ll be right back.

Sandy exits the room, leaving Bruce and Laura alone in her
room. He starts walking around the room, looking at her
various pictures and knickknacks.

BRUCE
So this is your room? It’s exactly
how I imagined it would be.

LAURA
(confused, but with a
laugh)
Okay...

He picks up the framed picture of Nick and Laura off of her

night stand and examines their smiling faces.
Green (07/25/2016) 35.

BRUCE
You look so happy. Maybe someday I
can see that smile.

LAURA
Can you just...

Laura points back towards the night stand, and Bruce

immediately understands, placing it back down.

BRUCE
Here. I brought you something.
Consider it a belated Birthday
present.

Bruce pulls a small, gift-wrapped jewelry bod out of his back

pocket.

LAURA
You really didn’t have to do that.

BRUCE
Of course I didn’t have to, I
wanted to. Open it!

Laura takes the wrapping off of the box, then pops it open to
discover a white gold chain NECKLACE with a diamond pendant.
Laura looks at it, stunned, then her eyes rise up to Bruce.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
I knew you’d like it. Try it on!

Laura hesitate for a moment, but takes it out of the box and
puts it around her neck, looking in the mirror. Bruce comes
up behind her and latches the back. As Bruce sees her
reflection in the mirror, a number of emotions come over him -
sadness for a brief moment before turning into elation.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
It’s perfect.

There’s a brief awkward moment between them as Laura notices

he’s staring directly into her eyes.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
What are you doing this weekend?

LAURA
Probably just hanging around here.

BRUCE
My parents are throwing this *
campaign fundraiser down at the *
marina. Come as my date! *
Green (07/25/2016) 36.

LAURA
I don’t know, Bruce... *

Bruce immediately looks hurt.

LAURA (CONT’D)
It’s nothing against you! It’s just
that... I’m definitely not ready to
go on a date with anyone.

A smile appears on Bruce’s face as he laughs, almost as if

he’s covering up the rejection.

BRUCE
I didn’t mean as like a DATE date.
My parents told me to bring some
friends, and, well... you’re kind
of the only friend I’ve made since
being back.

LAURA
I don’t even think I have anything *
to wear to something like that.

BRUCE
Don’t worry about that. I’ll take
care of everything. Please, you’d
really be doing me the favor this
time.

Laura contemplate for a moment, keeping his last line in her

mind.

LAURA
Sure.

BRUCE
Really!?

LAURA
Yeah. Why not?

Bruce goes in and gives her a hug, much to her surprise. *

BRUCE
(whispered in her ear)
You’re a life saver.

40 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - FOYER - DAY 40

The doorbell RINGS and Sandy opens the door to see a PACKAGE *
and a DELIVERY MAN walking away. It’s addressed to Laura. *
Green (07/25/2016) 37.

SANDY
Oh my. Laura! Can you come down *
here?

A few moments later, Laura appears at the top of the stairs

and starts walking down towards Sandy.

LAURA
What is it?

SANDY
(re: the package)
You tell me.

Laura takes the package from Sandy and places it on a nearby

table, opening it up to reveal a beautiful dark blue dress. *

SANDY (CONT’D)
Oh, honey. That’s gorgeous.

Laura opens up a NOTE that was inside the box as Sandy looks
over her shoulder. It reads, “See you tonight! -Bruce”

SANDY (CONT’D)
I tell ya, if I was only 20 years
younger, I’d -

Sandy catches herself with a laugh.

LAURA
Go on.

SANDY
Well... never mind. I was starting
to think they didn’t make boys like
him anymore.

LAURA
You sure you don’t want to go
tonight?

SANDY
Oh, stop. Now hurry up and get
ready, you’re going to be late!

41 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - DAY 41

Laura sits at her vanity, wearing the dress, and finishing up

her make-up. The dress has a deep neck, so she turns her
attention to the necklace box sitting beside her that Bruce
had given her.

She pulls it out and clasps it around her neck.

Green (07/25/2016) 38.

42 EXT. INN/MARINA - NIGHT 42 *

The fundraiser is underway outside of a beautiful Inn that *

overlooks the marina. It’s a fashionable event, but not too *
over the top. Various stations are set up for food and
drinks, in addition to WAITERS walking around with trays. One
of the waiters is Parker.

Laura enters with her arm linked with Bruce. She occasionally
catches glances from the crowd, and sees them whispering
towards each other when she and Bruce walk by, which makes
her nervous. Bruce leans in to her.

BRUCE
Can I tell you something? You know,
as a friend?

LAURA
What’s that.

BRUCE
You look stunning. I knew you would *
in that dress.

LAURA
You’ve got killer taste. *

Mr. and Mrs. Kane are standing by the bar, mingling and
making small talk with ANOTHER COUPLE, when Mrs. Kane’s eyes
catch sight of Bruce.

BRUCE
We’ve been spotted.

LAURA
By who?

The Kanes head straight for Bruce and Laura. *

MRS. KANE
Bruce, sweetie!

BRUCE *
Just smile and nod. *

Bruce lets out a sigh, then forces a smile on his face. *

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Mom. Dad.

MR. KANE
We were just bragging about our son
the hero!
(re: Laura)
Green (07/25/2016) 39.

MR. KANE (CONT'D)

And is this the young lady herself?
Laura, right?

Laura nods her head. The Kanes look at Laura and Mrs. Kane is
taken aback for a moment at the sight of her. There’s a brief
awkward moment as they don’t know exactly what to say.

LAURA
It’s really nice to meet you.

Laura extends her arm and shakes their hands.

MRS. KANE
Likewise, darling. That dress... is
gorgeous on you.

LAURA
Thanks. Bruce picked it out.

The Kanes plaster on a smile and exchange a look between each

other.

MR. KANE
We’re just happy you could make it *
tonight. Bruce told us all about
the ordeal you went through. Such a
brave girl.

LAURA
Bruce was the brave one.

MR. KANE
Yes. He’s turning into a good man.
It’s nice to see him dating again,
though. You must be something
special.

BRUCE
Dad...

LAURA
What?

MRS. KANE
It’s just been such a long time
since Bruce has introduced us to
one of his girlfriends. *

LAURA
Oh. I mean... we -
Green (07/25/2016) 40.

BRUCE
(cutting Laura off)
Mom, did you want me to get you
another drink?

Mrs. Kane looks down at her near empty glass.

MRS. KANE
Sure, sweetheart. Thank you. *

Bruce gestures for Laura to follow him as they approach the

bar. Bruce looks nervous, like he’s been caught out.

LAURA
What was that?

BRUCE
I can explain. *

LAURA
Bruce, I thought I made it clear.

BRUCE
No, you did! Absolutely.

LAURA
Then go tell them the truth.

BRUCE
I’m sorry. It’s just... they worry *
I keep to myself too much, so when *
they asked about who I was *
bringing, they just assumed, and I *
didn’t have the heart to correct *
them. You know parents. *

LAURA
I don’t know, Bruce.

BRUCE
Please, Laura. Just for tonight.

He looks at her with pleading eyes.

LAURA
(with a sigh)
Okay.

BRUCE
You’re the best!

Bruce hugs her and gives her a kiss on the cheek before
walking up to the bar to order his mother’s drink. Parker
walks by and notices Laura. *
Green (07/25/2016) 41.

He’s hesitant at first, but puts on a smile as he places his

tray down and surprises her from behind, just like he had
done to Bre earlier.

Laura whips around in anger, but her expression quickly turns

to happiness when she sees that it’s Parker. She hugs him.

LAURA
Parker!

PARKER
Hey. Look at you all painted up and
hobnobbing with the elite. *

LAURA
I’m just doing a favor for a
friend.

Laura half-jokingly hits him.

LAURA (CONT’D)
Why didn’t you text me back, jerk!

PARKER
I know. I wanted to come see you in
the hospital...

LAURA
Look, it’s fine. I get it. Bre told
me you weren’t doing so hot.

PARKER
Good news sure travels fast, huh? *
(beat)
But hey, you’re coming back to
school soon, right?

LAURA
Monday.

PARKER
Great! We all miss you. It’s been,
I don’t know, depressing, you know?
It’s the end of Senior year. We
should try making the best of it.

LAURA
Definitely.

They’re interrupted as Mrs. Kane comes over with a

PHOTOGRAPHER as Bruce returns from the bar with her drink.
Green (07/25/2016) 42.

MRS. KANE
Laura, darling, this is the
photographer from the Register. *

Parker picks up his tray and gets back to work. *

MRS. KANE (CONT’D) *

He wants to get a picture of Bruce
and his new girlfriend for a follow
up about the rescue. *

On hearing this, Parker shoots her a look. *

Laura looks between Parker and Bruce, stymied, then tries to *

shake her head “no” towards Parker as Mrs. Kane hands him her
old, empty glass. *

MRS. KANE (CONT’D)

(to Parker)
Be a peach, dear.

Parker puts her glass with the others on his try and quickly
walks away.

LAURA
Parker...

He doesn’t listen and keeps walking, only turning around to

shoot her an angered and hurt look. She turns to the camera
and forces on a smile as the FLASH goes off.

43 EXT. MARINA/INN - LATER 43 *

Parker is collecting dishes and glasses off of empty tables

as Laura approaches him.

LAURA
Parker, let me explain.

Parker keeps his attention on what he’s doing, not even

making eye contact with Laura.

PARKER
What? You’re single now. By all *
means, don’t waste any time. *

LAURA
Don’t be so dramatic. We’re just
friends.
Green (07/25/2016) 43.

PARKER
Whatever. Nick was planning on *
breaking up with you at the end of
summer anyway.

Parker storms away.

44 EXT. MARINA/INN - LATER 44 *

A depressed Laura stands by herself down on the dock behind *

the inn, away from the party, staring out into the water. The *
boats around her rock gently back and forth. *

She bends down and places her finger tips in the water, *
briefly running them back and forth. A SHOUT in the distance *
scares her, causing her to quickly pull her hand out and *
stand up. She looks over to see a YOUNG COUPLE laughing and *
jumping into the water. *

Laura looks back up to the party to see a group of people *

surrounding Bruce, talking his ear off. An older man, MR.
ALVES, approaches her.

The couple splashes and plays together in the water. *

MR. ALVES
Laura. I thought that was you.

LAURA
Mr. Alves! How are you?

MR. ALVES
I should be asking you that
question.

LAURA
I’m okay. Actually looking forward *
to coming back to school. *

Bruce sees Laura talking to the Mr. Alves, excuses himself

from the crowd, and heads over to her.

MR. ALVES
Good to hear. Everyone there’s been
thinking of you.

BRUCE
Everything all right, Laura?

LAURA
Bruce, this is Mr. Alves.
Green (07/25/2016) 44.

BRUCE
(shaking Alves’ hand)
Bruce Kane.

Laura starts to notice that “SHARK WARNING: HIGH RISK AREA” *

sings are posted all over. *

MR. ALVES
Oh, the whole town knows who you
are by now, Mr. Kane. Not a day’s
gone by where I haven’t read about
you in the paper.

BRUCE
I wish they’d stop. There’s nothing
left to say.

MR. ALVES
Such a modest young man.

LAURA
Mr. Alves is my English teacher.

Laura looks over at the couple to see the man emerge from the *
water alone and wipe his eyes, looking around him. *

BRUCE
Really? I got certified to sub at
the school when I got back in town,
but there’ve just been no openings. *

Laura watches at the man continues to look around, alone. *

MR. ALVES
(with a chuckle)
It’s closing in on the end of the
year, so most of us have long used
up those sick days!

BRUCE
I figured. Hopefully something
comes up. *

Laura, still seeing no sign of the woman, and seeing the man *
look around himself more and more, starts walking towards him *
with purpose. *

Bruce notices. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Laura? *

She turns back to Bruce as she continues. *

Green (07/25/2016) 45.

LAURA *
It’s the shark! Get help! *

Her shouts draw some attention behind Bruce as she runs out *
towards the swimmers. *

But as she turns back, she sees the woman emerge, laughing *
next to the man. She slows to a stop and watches the couple *
embrace, oblivious, as Bruce approaches behind her and puts *
his hands on her shoulders. She jumps at his touch. *

BRUCE
You alright? *

Laura calms herself down, realizing how she overreacted. She *

looks around and notices a number of people from the party *
are now staring down towards her. *

LAURA
I'm sorry.

She runs away towards the parking lot, as Bruce takes off *
after her.

BRUCE *
(to onlookers) *
Everything’s ok! *

45 EXT. INN - MOMENTS LATER 45 *

Laura quickly walks towards the parking lot, away from the *
Inn, as Bruce pops out running behind her. He catches up to *
her.

BRUCE
Laura, stop!

LAURA
I'm just gonna go, okay?

BRUCE
Please don't. Come back to the *
party. *

LAURA
Bruce, I can’t. That was so *
embarrassing.

BRUCE
It's my fault, I should have known *
being by the water was a bad idea. *

He extends his hand out to her.

Green (07/25/2016) 46.

LAURA
I can't let you leave, too. It's
your parents' party.

BRUCE
Please. Dick and Lily are in full
campaign mode by now. They won't
even notice we're gone.

Laura takes his hand with a smile.

46 EXT. BRUCE’S HOUSE - BACK YARD - NIGHT 46

Bruce’s house is a beautiful, large home overlooking the

ocean. Bruce escorts Laura out the back sliding door onto the
patio. It’s the perfect entertaining spot with a bar, outside
grill area, lounge chairs, plants, a pool, and a small pool
house.

BRUCE
And the final stop on the grand
tour.

Laura’s eyes widen. *

LAURA
It’s beautiful. You’re so lucky to
have grown up here.

BRUCE
Well, there wasn’t much time to
enjoy it before they shipped me
away.
(re: the bar)
Can I get you a drink?

Laura contemplates for a moment.

LAURA
Sure.

Bruce responds with his patented winning smile.

47 EXT. BRUCE’S HOUSE - BACK YARD - LATER 47

Bruce and Laura are seated at the bar, drinking out of a

bottle of wine. They’re laughing, and clearly both a little
tipsy. Music plays from speakers hanging on each side of the
bar.
Green (07/25/2016) 47.

LAURA
You know, My mom’s totally got the
hots for you. She thinks you’re SO
dreamy.

BRUCE
(laughing)
You can tell her I’m flattered.

LAURA
You should be! She’s really picky
about men. Not for herself. Just *
the ones that I date. She hated *
Nick. Like HATED him.

BRUCE
Why’s that?

LAURA
I think he reminded her a lot of my *
father. God, textbook, right? Nick *
was a good guy, though. Much
sweeter than Dad ever was.

She starts to tear up, but quickly catches herself. Bruce

puts his arm on her shoulder, trying to comfort her.

BRUCE
You think about him a lot?

LAURA
All the time. I mean, obviously.

BRUCE
Your first love never really goes
away. I think about mine every day. *

LAURA
So why aren’t you still together? *

Bruce shrugs his shoulders.

BRUCE
It’s... complicated. I still see
her sometimes. She’s always there
when I need someone to talk to.

LAURA
That sounds really nice. You’re
lucky.

A new song begins to play through the speakers. It’s the same
slower paced song that Bruce had been listening to on his
boat earlier.
Green (07/25/2016) 48.

LAURA (CONT’D)
I love this song.

A smile crosses Bruce’s face as he rises out of his chair.

BRUCE
May I have this dance?

Laura laughs and looks around.

LAURA
You know we’re in your backyard,
right?

BRUCE
And?

Laura shrugs and finishes off the last of her glass.

LAURA
All right, sailor boy. Let’s see
what you’ve got.

She gets up and they begin to slow dance together like

they’re kids at a prom. The longer they go on, the more
comfortable Laura feels and begins resting her head on his
shoulder. She takes in a deep breath of his scent.

LAURA (CONT’D)
You smell really nice. Better than
most boys.

They both let out a little chuckle.

BRUCE
(whispered)
Laura?

LAURA
Yes.

BRUCE
Let’s go swimming?

They stop dancing.

LAURA
Now?!

BRUCE
Yeah. I’ll change real quick, and
Mom’s got swimsuits for guests. *
Green (07/25/2016) 49.

LAURA
I don’t know... Me and water aren’t
really on speaking terms right now.

BRUCE
It’s just a pool, and I’ll be right
there with you. Come on, Ali, it’ll
be fun!

LAURA
Who’s Ali? *

BRUCE
Wow. I’m so sorry. *

LAURA
Your ex? *

BRUCE *
Guilty! *

LAURA *
Nice Freudian slip.

BRUCE
So about that swim... Laura. *

Laura hesitates for a moment, but a slightly drunken smile

takes over.

LAURA
Okay.

48 INT. POOL HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER 48

Laura looks through the bathing suits. There’re bikinis and *

one-pieces. She picks one of the bikinis up and holds it up
to her, before touching her side where her wound is. She
quickly puts it down and picks up the one-piece.

49 EXT. BRUCE’S HOUSE - BACK YARD - LATER 49

Laura comes out of the pool house in the one-piece bathing

suit. Bruce is nowhere to be seen. She sits down at the edge
of the in-ground pool and looks hesitant at the water in
front of her. She bites her lip as she slowly puts her legs
in the water, gently swaying them back and forth.

She looks up at the large house in front of her and her

attention is immediately drawn towards a lit up set of
windows on the second floor. Bruce is standing there, taking
off his pants and putting his swim trunks on.
Green (07/25/2016) 50.

Laura looks a little longer than she should, and Bruce turns
to the window, catching her. He smiles and waves, and she
immediately turns red in embarrassment, but laughs at herself
and waves back.

The light in the window turns off as Bruce leaves the room,
and Laura buries her head in her hands, still laughing to
herself.

UNDERWATER. Laura’s feet kick gently in the water. Bruce *

breaks the surface as he dives into the pool. He swims over *
to Laura and pops up in front of her.

BRUCE
Coming in?

LAURA
I just have to be careful with...
you know.

She gestures towards the side of her wound.

BRUCE
Don’t worry. I’ve got you.

Laura slides into the pool and into Bruce’s arms. He walks
her out towards the middle.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
You good?

Laura nods and dips under the water, quickly popping up to

find Bruce staring right into her eyes.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Hi.

LAURA
Hi.

Bruce leans in and kisses her on her neck. She’s hesitant at

first, but a smile spreads across her face and she allows it.
Bruce moves to her mouth and they begin passionately kissing.

50 INT. POOL HOUSE - NIGHT 50

Laura’s eyes open and she realizes she’s on the futon in the
pool house. Her back faces Bruce as he paces back and forth
on the phone by the pool, trying to whisper. *

BRUCE
(on the phone)
No, it’s okay, baby.
51.

BRUCE (CONT'D)
You know you can call me any time
of the day.
(beat)
Of course I miss you, Ali. I miss
Every day.
(beat with a laugh)
Stop that. You know I’ll see you
soon enough.

Laura as a mixed emotion of hurt and confusion as she closes

her eyes.

51 INT. POOL HOUSE - DAWN 51

Laura looks over at the sleeping Bruce beside her. She

quietly attempts to get out from under the blanket without
waking him.

52 EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY 52

Laura and Bre are jogging down the street, heading towards
Laura’s house. Bre has barely broken a sweat, but Laura looks
a little worse for wear, going slower and lagging behind.

BRE
You doing okay?

LAURA
Yeah. Just have to get back in the
groove. Did you talk to Parker yet?

BRE
Tried to. He’s dodging my calls,
which only happens never. He must
be really pissed.

LAURA
That’s an understatement.

BRE
How’d the rest of the night go?

Laura pauses, choosing her words.

LAURA
It was fine.

The reach Laura’s house and walk up to the front door.

BRE
Just fine? Could you be more vague?
52.

LAURA
What? I left early after
embarrassing myself horribly in
front of the entire town, and came
home.

BRE
What about Bruce?

Sandy comes out of the front door, dressed for work,

interrupting the conversation and saving Lauren from
answering.

SANDY
Hi, Bre.

BRE
Hey, Mrs. Wilcox.

SANDY
What are you two talking about?

LAURA
Frivolous girly matters.

BRE
I was trying to grill your daughter
for every little detail from last
night.

SANDY
Well, she must have had quite a
time since she let her mother wait
up half the night wondering where
she was. I didn’t fall asleep until
after one.

Laura pauses for a brief moment.

LAURA
Mom, I already told you I was
sorry, and I came home right after
that.

Bre immediately looks at her with a sly grin.

SANDY
I know, I know. I’m sure Bruce took
good care of you.

LAURA
Uh huh...
Green (07/25/2016) 53.

SANDY
I get out late, so don’t let Chloe
stay up all night.

LAURA
I won’t.

Sandy heads to her car, and Bre watches until she backs up
out of the driveway and heads down the street before turning
to Laura.

LAURA (CONT’D)
Bre...

BRE
You totally hooked up with him!

Laura looks at her with a guilty, toothy expression.

LAURA
I feel so guilty! We went back to
his place, drank a little, and the
next thing I knew... Bre, you can’t
tell anyone.

BRE
Do you want to be with him?

LAURA
No! I was just vulnerable, I guess.

BRE
Well, you better let him know now
before he gets too attached.

LAURA
I don’t think there’s any chance of
that. He’s still stuck on this old
girlfriend of his.

53 INT. BRUCE’S BOAT - DAY 53 *

Bruce undoes a button on his sleeves, his collar, rolls up *

his cuffs, tousles his hair. *

He stands in front of a mirror inside the boat’s cabin with a *

cue card in his hand. He looks at himself in the mirror,
trying different deliveries as if he’s an actor auditioning.

BRUCE
That shark is still out there. That
shark is still out there. The
shark’s still out there!
Green (07/25/2016) 54.

Bruce collects himself and takes a deep breath, ready to

perform.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
At the end of the day, that shark
is still out there. I just can’t,
in my right mind, let it take
another innocent life.

He smiles with satisfaction of that delivery. We can see on

the table behind him, that Bruce has collected all the *
newspaper articles that were written about him.

One features him standing by Laura’s hospital bed. It’s

framed and hanging on the wall.

54 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY 54

Laura walks into the room as Chloe sits on the couch,

watching TV.

LAURA
What are you doing? I thought you *
wanted to go to the beach? *

CHLOE
Your boyfriend’s on TV again.

Laura looks at the TV and Bruce’s face is plastered across it

yet again. He’s down by the docks.

BRUCE
(on TV)
At the end of the day, that shark
is still out there. I just can’t,
in my right mind, let it take
another innocent life. I’m going to
hunt it down, find it, and kill it.
For Nick. And for Laura.

Laura picks up the remote and turns the TV off. *

55 EXT. BEACH - DAY 55

Laura sits on the fence, with her sketch book in hand. She *
looks out to the shore where Chloe is playing with a small *
group of KIDS.

Someone has painted a shark behind the symbol of a swimming *

person on the “Swim at your own risk” sign. *
Green (07/25/2016) 55.

Laura’s phone starts to ring and she sees that it’s Bruce. *
She lets out a sigh before answering the call.

LAURA
Hello?

BRUCE
(on the phone)
You know, you should really put
sunscreen on. You’re starting to
get a little red.

Laura starts looking around and spots Bruce standing not far
from her. He holds a BOUQUET OF FLOWERS in his hand. Laura
hangs the phone up and rises up to meet Bruce.

LAURA
Hey. Sorry about just taking off
this morning. I had to get home
before Mom went to work.

BRUCE
It’s okay. Here.

He hands her the bouquet, which she accepts.

LAURA
What are these for?

BRUCE
A guy should never need a reason to
buy a pretty girl flowers.

LAURA
How’d you know I was here?

BRUCE
(changing the subject)
What? No “thank you”?

LAURA
Thank you. They’re beautiful.

BRUCE
Did you happen to catch the news
this afternoon?

LAURA
I did. Actually.

BRUCE
Don’t worry. That shark’s never
going to hurt another person again.
Green (07/25/2016) 56.

LAURA
Do you... know how to catch a *
shark? Something tells me you don’t
just put a net out.

BRUCE
Wow. I thought you’d be, I don’t
know, grateful.

Before Laura can answer, the phone in Bruce’s pocket begins

ringing. It’s the same ring from Nick’s phone. Bruce quickly
reaches into his pocket and awkwardly fiddles around until it
stops ringing. Laura is frozen.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Sorry. Are you okay?

LAURA
It’s just... that’s the same ring
tone Nick had.
(beat)
Listen, we need to talk.

BRUCE
That phrase is never the start of a
good conversation.

LAURA
What happened last night... it
shouldn’t have happened.

BRUCE
I thought we had a good time.

LAURA
We did! We absolutely did. But I
need a little time. And space.

Laura bites her lip, worried about Bruce’s reaction to the

blow.

BRUCE
Hey, you take however long you
need, okay? No pressure.

Laura lets out a sigh of relief.

LAURA
Really? Wow. Okay. Good!

BRUCE
What did you think I would say?
Green (07/25/2016) 57.

LAURA
I don’t know. I guess I just
assumed you’d be mad and never want
to talk to me again.

BRUCE
Don’t worry. I’m not going
anywhere.

56 EXT./INT. BEACH/BRUCE’S CAR - MOMENTS LATER 56

Bruce passes a “SHARK WARNING: HIGH RISK AREA” sign as he *

gets into his car. He pauses for a moment, taking in a deep *
breath.

BRUCE
(to himself)
I don’t want to end it, but it’s
for the best. We have to move on.
(answering himself)
But you’re my everything. I can’t
live without you.

It’s immediately followed by him smashing his hands on the

steering wheel in a fit of rage and SCREAMING.

A brief moment later, he calms himself down. He picks up a

phone and opens up his voicemail.

ALISON
(on voicemail)
Hey, babe! It’s Ali. I miss you.
Call me back, okay? I want to see
you soon.

The voicemail calms Bruce, and a smile begins to cross his

face.

57 EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY 57

Laura walks up to the school with Bre as other VARIOUS

STUDENTS head in.

BRE
You good?

LAURA
I feel like I’m going to vomit.

BRE
Why?
Green (07/25/2016) 58.

LAURA
I just don’t want to be THAT girl,
you know? Are people staring?
They’re staring.

BRE
Relax, okay? It’s just a school
day. Just like every other school
day. No one is staring.

They walk through the doors into the school.

58 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS 58

Bre and Laura practically stop in their tracks as everyone in

the hallway turns and looks at Laura. There’s a few WHISPERS
amongst them.

BRE
Okay. Maybe a few people are
staring.

Parker is standing by his locker, emptying books out of his

backpack. Bre and Laura approach him.

LAURA
Parker, what’s going on? Why is
everyone looking at me like I
strangled a puppy?

PARKER
Didn’t you guys read the paper this
morning?

BRE
No. Because we’re not Seventy.

He pulls the local newspaper out of his bag. On the front

cover is a picture of Laura and Bruce at the fundraiser with *
the headline “LOVE AT FIRST BITE?”

BRE (CONT’D)
Well, that’s a little distasteful.

PARKER
What? The headline?
(loud enough for everyone
to hear)
Or the cold hearted bitch flaunting
her new man in public not a week
after Nick’s death?
Green (07/25/2016) 59.

Laura snatches the paper out of Parker’s hand and starts

tearing up the front page.

LAURA
There is NOTHING going on between
me and Bruce. How dare you say that
about Nick!

Laura throws the pieces of paper in Parker’s face before

storming away.

BRE
(to Parker)
Really?

PARKER
Really.

Bre looks at him as disgust as she walks away.

59 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - ENGLISH CLASS - CONTINUOUS 59

Laura hurries in, looking behind her at the staring students,

and CRASHES into someone. She lets out a startled cry.

LAURA
I’m so sorry...

She whips around to see Bruce standing in front of her with

his usual smile on his face.

BRUCE
Hi, Laura.

LAURA
What are you doing here, Bruce?

BRUCE
That’s Mr. Kane here. I’m subbing
for Mr. Alves.

LAURA
I thought I said I needed some
space.

Bruce looks at her in confusion.

BRUCE
Laura, I applied to work here *
before I met you. *
Green (07/25/2016) 60.

LAURA
Don’t you think it’s a little
awkward. You know, considering...

BRUCE
Well, yeah. But I didn’t pick your
class. It’s what was open. I *
couldn’t give up this opportunity. *
We can both be mature about this.

LAURA
Yeah. I guess you’re right.

Bruce looks down and notices she’s wearing the necklace he

gave her. She looks down and sees what he’s staring at.

BRUCE
I’m glad you’re wearing it.

Bruce leans in close to Laura and whispers in her ear.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
You have no idea how happy it makes
me to see it on you again.

Bruce moves his head to look eye to eye with her, as if he’s
going to kiss her, but the bell RINGS and Laura goes to her *
seat. *

The class settles down as Laura takes her seat, excited at *

the site of a substitute. Bre walks in and sees Bruce as he
starts writing “Mr. Kane” on the board. She sits down next to
Laura.

BRE
What the hell?

Laura shrugs her shoulders. Parker comes in the classroom and

looks at Bruce in disbelief as he takes his seat.

PARKER
Where’s Mr. Alves.

BRUCE
Mr. Alves... had a bad fall last
night at home. He’ll probably be
out for a while.

Bruce stands in front of the class as they all pull out their *
copies of The Scarlet Letter. *
Green (07/25/2016) 61.

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
All right, so going from where you *
guys left off with Mr. Alves, who *
can tell me why Hester was *
ostracized from the community? *

There’s no response. Bruce scans the classroom and finally *

Parker raises his hand. Bruce looks at the seating chart in *
front of him. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Yes. Parker. *

PARKER *
She couldn’t bother to keep her *
legs closed after she thought her *
husband died at sea. *

BRUCE *
I think there’s a little more to it *
than that. Care to elaborate? *

PARKER *
Why don’t you ask Laura? She seems *
to be the expert. *

The students start to laugh and snicker to themselves. Laura *

immediately turns around to face Parker. *

LAURA *
EXCUSE YOU!? *

BRE *
Laura, calm down. *

PARKER *
You heard me. How long does it take *
for you to put make-up on two faces *
in the morning? *

LAURA *
One more word and I’ll kick your *
stones straight up into your *
throat. *

Parker laughs. *

PARKER *
(to Bruce) *
Did you hear that? She just *
threatened me! *
Green (07/25/2016) 62.

BRUCE *
I did hear that, yes. *
(beat) *
Hardly a threat since you’d *
actually have to have a pair for *
her to kick. *

The class laughs, and some even applaud. *

PARKER *
You can’t say that to me! *

BRUCE *
That’s funny. Because I just did. *
Now go to the office. *

PARKER *
For what!? *

BRUCE *
Causing a scene in my classroom by *
attempting to slut shame one of *
your fellow classmates, which this *
school has a zero tolerance policy *
on. *

Parker stares daggers into Bruce as he rises out of his seat *

and grabs his stuff. He doesn’t take his eyes off Bruce as he *
leaves the room. *

60 OMITTED 60 *

61 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - LATER 61

Laura opens the door to her locker and sees her reflection on
the mirror inside. Her eyes move down to the necklace she’s
wearing, and she unclasps it and puts it on the shelf. *

62 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - LATER 62

The door to a classroom opens up and a FEW STUDENTS file out. *

There’s a sign beside the door that reads “Detention sign-
in.”

Parker comes out and takes off down the hallway, passing by *
the English class. Bruce is sitting at his desk, going over
Mr. Alves’s lesson plan. *

Parker stops and looks at him. Bruce raises his head and
stares back, waving to Parker with a smile. In reply, Parker
raises his middle finger before heading back down the hall.
Green (07/25/2016) 63.

He stops at the bathroom, only to be met by WET FLOOR and DO

NOT ENTER signs. Parker rolls his eyes and turns around, *
passing by Bruce’s classroom once again. This time, he *
ignores Bruce as he passes, but Bruce notices him, sliding *
his chair away from the desk. *

63 OMITTED 63 *

64 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - LOCKER ROOM - MOMENTS LATER 64

Parker enters the locker room, passing by the sections of *

lockers and towards the urinals. *

He stands at one of the urinals, relieving himself, when he’s *

startled by the sound of one of showers being turned on.

PARKER
Hello?

No answer. Parker heads towards the showers and turns the *

corner, only to find them empty, still blasting out water. He *
curiously approaches the nozzle that’s on and turns it off. *

Beside the Coach’s office, there’s a wall of SPORTS

EQUIPMENT. A hand picks up a BASEBALL BAT. *

Parker passes by the lockers and walks towards the exit. *

Somewhere in the locker room, a locker door SLAMS, startling *
him. He quickens his pace towards the door when a GARBAGE CAN *
rolls slowy into the doorway. *

Parker stops, considering his options. He turns and heads for *

the other door. He doesn’t get too far before Bruce steps out *
from behind a doorway with the bat in his hand. He swings it, *
smashing into Parker’s back. *

Parker lands face first on the floor of the locker room with *
a pained cry as Bruce steps down on him, holding him in *
place. *

Bruce bends down and searches through Parker’s coat pockets.

As he does, Parker strains to look up, catching only a *
glimpse of the WATCH on his wrist. Bruce pats him down and
pulls Parker’s wallet out of his back pocket, before
withdrawing his foot and disappearing. Parker lies there in *
pain, unable to move.
Green (07/25/2016) 64.

65 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS 65

Bruce peeks his head out of the locker room door. When he
sees the hall is still empty, he takes off down the hall,
dumping Parker’s wallet into the trash can and rolling it *
back out of the doorway. *

66 EXT. GROCERY STORE - DAY 66

Laura and Sandy are at Sandy’s car in the parking lot with a
carriage full of bagged groceries. They pile them into the
open trunk.

LAURA
It’s weird that he just showed up
like that my first day back, don’t
you think?

SANDY
Honey, Bruce has been talking about
teaching ever since he started at
the hospital. That’s why he
volunteered for pediatrics.

LAURA
Of course you’re going to take his
side.

SANDY
There’s no sides here. You’re
blowing this way out of proportion.

LAURA
I don’t know. It just made me feel
really uncomfortable.

SANDY
He’s perfectly harmless, and
honestly, maybe he’s the kind of
guy you should spend more time *
around.

Sandy closes the trunk of the car, and almost on cue, Bruce
appears right beside them, smiling. Laura’s face drops in
disbelief.

SANDY (CONT’D)
Bruce!

BRUCE
I thought that was you guys.
Green (07/25/2016) 65.

SANDY
What a coincidence. Laura was just
telling me about the new job.
Congratulations.

LAURA
(forward and cold)
What are you doing here?

SANDY
Laura!

BRUCE
(of course)
Shopping.

Bruce notices that Laura’s neck is bare. *

BRUCE (CONT’D)
You took the necklace off.

LAURA
Yeah. I just... didn’t want to lose
it somewhere.

Bruce looks concerned, and before he can reply, LIZ, 25,

walks over.

LIZ
Bruce!?

Bruce’s eyes go wide as he recognizes her. He starts moving *

nervously as she comes up to him for a hug.

BRUCE
Hi, Liz.

LIZ
It’s been so long.

When she pulls away from the hug, the nervous Bruce gestures
towards Sandy and Laura.

BRUCE
Liz Vaughn, this is Sandy Wilcox
and -

LIZ
Laura! Of course. God, what an
ordeal you went through.
(to Bruce)
The whole family was so proud to
see you all over the news.
Green (07/25/2016) 66.

BRUCE
How are they?

LIZ
Good! Mom and Dad ask about you. *
You should come see them sometime.

BRUCE
Yeah. I will. Definitely.

LAURA
How do you guys know each other?

Bruce is extremely uncomfortable and starts fidgeting. A

nervous smile crosses Liz’s face.

LIZ
Bruce used to date my sister.
Alison.

Bruce immediately grabs hold of Liz and pulls her in for a

hug.

BRUCE
I’ve got to get going. It was great
seeing you, Liz. Give my best to
the family.

Liz is a little startled and confused by his abruptness.

LIZ
Oh, yeah... Of course.
(to Sandy and Laura)
Nice meeting you guys.

Liz starts to walk away.

BRUCE
I’ll see you tomorrow, Laura.

Laura forces on a smile as Bruce hurries along.

67 EXT. MARINA - DAY 67

NEWS FOOTAGE shot from the shore of Bruce chumming the waters
off the coast. He looks intently at the waters as he throws
the chum overboard.

68 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 68

Bruce is on the deck of his boat as the song he danced to *

with Laura plays through a speaker.
Green (07/25/2016) 67.

The CAMERA MAN on the shore gives him a THUMBS UP as he takes

the camera off his shoulder. Bruce replies with a nod.

The song ends, then begins again from the beginning. On loop. *
He looks out into the bloody water with no sign of the shark.

BRUCE
(to himself)
We have to move on.
(answering himself)
But you’re my everything.

Bruce heads to the cabin door. He unlocks the padlock, then *

vanishes inside.

69 EXT. MARINA - DUSK 69 *

Bruce stands on the dock beside his boat, looking at the *

CAMERA, with Casey beside him holding a microphone. She fixes *
her hair in the reflection of the camera. *

CASEY *
Are we ready to go again? *
Make sure to get the sign in the *
background. It’s useless without *
the sign! *

The FRAME adjusts to get another “SHARK WARNING: HIGH RISK *

AREA” sign behind them. *

CASEY (CONT’D) *
Great. Let’s go. *
(to Bruce) *
Bruce, can you tell us how it’s *
going out there? Any signs? *

BRUCE
Still no luck finding it, but I
refuse to give up. I know he’s out
there and this time, it’s personal.

CASEY *
Great, Bruce. Perfect. The piece *
will run on the morning show. We’re *
getting AMAZING feedback from your *
appearances. You’re ratings gold. *

BRUCE
Actually, can I get one more take?
I think I can do better with that
last line.
Green (07/25/2016) 68.

CASEY *
(with a wink) *
You got it, sweetheart. *

70 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - ENGLISH CLASS - DAY 70

Class has already begun as Parker enters the room. His face
is bruised around the nose. The students stare at him as he
hands a PASS to Bruce and takes his seat behind Laura.

BRUCE
How are you feeling, Parker?

PARKER
Fine.

Laura and Bre exchange a worried look. Bruce starts walking

down the aisles with a stack of papers.

BRUCE
All right, everything off your
desks except for a pen or pencil.
Pop quiz on last night’s reading.

The class moans as they obey. Bruce walks down Laura’s aisle
and subtly places his hand on her shoulder as he drops the
paper on her desk.

Parker takes notice of the hand and immediately catches a

glimpse of Bruce’s watch as his shirt cuff rises up. Parker’s
eyes go wide and he looks up at Bruce as he drops the quiz on *
his desk.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Everything okay?

Parker simply nods as he grabs the quiz.

71 EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY 71

Bre and Laura are eating lunch on the benches outside of the
school.

LAURA
You should have seen how he reacted
when she brought up Alison.
Something’s off.

BRE
I don’t know, Laur. He seems pretty
normal to me.
Green (07/25/2016) 69.

LAURA
Don’t you think it’s weird how he
just pops up everywhere? It’s like
he always knows where I’m going to
be.

BRE
Yeah, it’s a little strange.
Definitely. But at the same time,
the guy needs a job, and he needs
to buy groceries. He’s probably
just lonely. You said yourself he
doesn’t really have any friends.

LAURA
Maybe you’re right. I’m probably
just overreacting.

Parker walks by and stares at them, before entering back into

the school.

LAURA (CONT’D)
What happened to him?

BRE
Katherine told me he was attacked
in the locker room after detention.

LAURA
Do they know who did it?

BRE
(shaking her head)
No. They just stole his wallet and
ran.

72 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - ENGLISH CLASS - MOMENTS LATER 72

Bruce is sitting at the desk, going over the pop quizzes,

when Parker walks in.

PARKER
Bruce? Mr. Kane.

Parker is nervous, biting his lip and a little hesitant. *

BRUCE
What can I do for you, Parker? *

Parker takes a breath as he approaches the desk with forced *

confidence. *
Green (07/25/2016) 70.

PARKER
Do you know what time it is?

Bruce flashes a sly smile for a moment as he leans back in *

his chair and lifts his sleeve up to reveal his watch. *

BRUCE
It’s a little after 12.

Parker looks down at the watch then locks eyes with Bruce. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Anything else? *

PARKER
Nice watch. *

Parker looks daggers into Bruce’s eyes, and Bruce rises up *

out of his chair to come face to face with Parker.

BRUCE
You’re a smart kid, Parker.

Bruce gets very close to Parker’s face, and Parker tries to *

hold it together.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
And a smart kid would know that
next time maybe he won’t be lucky
enough to walk away with just a few
bruises.

Parker swallows and bites down on his lips. The bell RINGS,
signifying the end of lunch and Bruce smiles.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
You have a good rest of your day,
okay, bud?

73 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - LATER 73

Bre and Laura walk back in and see a small group gathered
around Laura’s locker.

LAURA
What the hell?

She storms over and pushes through the few gathered students
to see someone has spray painted “HOT FOR TEACHER” on her
locker. The A is larger than the other letters and in red,
while the rest are black. One of the girls looking on is
ASHLEY.
Green (07/25/2016) 71.

ASHLEY
Looks like we know what grade
you’ll be getting in English class
this semester.

BRE
Oh, knock it off, Ashley! Like *
you’ve never hooked up with a guy *
you shouldn’t have. *

Bre cringes when she realizes what she said, and Laura’s eyes *
go wide in anger. Ashley and the other students smile in *
shocked glee.

ASHLEY *
Oh my god, we thought it was just a *
joke! Good going, Laura! *

LAURA
Nice, Bre. Thanks. *

Laura storms down the hall.

BRE
Laura, wait!

She ignores her and keeps on going. She quickens her pace as
tears form in her eyes and she turns a corner. Standing in
front of her is Parker at his locker.

Laura collects herself and approaches him.

PARKER
Don’t worry, I didn’t write that on
your locker.

LAURA
I know.

PARKER
You can tell your boyfriend I got
the message loud and clear. I’ll
leave you alone.

LAURA
You think it was Bruce that did
this to you?

PARKER
Like you didn’t know. *

Parker grabs his bag and slams the locker shut near Laura’s
face, taking off before she has the chance to respond.
Green (07/25/2016) 72.

74 EXT. MARINA - DAY 74 *

Laura walks down to the docks. The place is very sparsely

populated. People are leaving their boats for the day as she
heads down the familiar pier we’ve seen before.

Laura stops when she finds Nick’s boat. It hasn’t been *

touched since the day of the attack. The birthday balloons
are now fully deflated, and the streamers are dirty and
wearing away from the elements.

Laura climbs in the boat and looks around, quickly finding a

sweatshirt of Nick’s. She lifts it up and smells it, taking
in a deep breath, before pulling it on herself.

Underneath the sweater is the portrait she has drawn of him.

The paper is beat up a little bit from being outdoors, but
it’s still in good condition. She sits down in the boat and
stares at it, letting a smile spread across her face.

LAURA
I miss you.

She rolls the portrait up.

75 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - LATER 75 *

Chloe is sitting in front of the TV with a video game

controller in her hand. She’s very into the game she’s
playing on the TV.

We hear the front door open and Laura’s voice. She walks into
the living room on the phone.

LAURA
(on the phone)
Yeah, I know you’re sorry, but how
could you say something so stupid?
(beat)
You know what? Save it, Bre. Don’t
talk to me.

Laura hangs the phone up and she stops in her tracks at the
sight in front of her.

LAURA (CONT’D)
What are you doing in here?

We PULL BACK to reveal that Bruce is sitting beside Chloe on

the floor, playing video games with her. Bruce turns around
with a smile.
73.

BRUCE
Your mom needed a last minute
babysitter when you didn’t come
home after school, and I
volunteered.

LAURA
Chloe, don’t you have homework?

CHLOE
Just one more game!

LAURA
Chloe!

BRUCE
You heard your sister. We can play
again next time I come over, okay?

CHLOE
Okay!

Chloe leans in and hugs Bruce, which makes Laura extremely

uncomfortable. She gets up and heads to the stairs to her
room.

LAURA
Next time?

BRUCE
Yeah! I gave up my shifts at the
hospital a couple days a week so
you don’t have to watch her all the
time.

LAURA
Was that my mom’s idea, or yours?

Bruce looks at her with a confused expression.

BRUCE
Hers. She gave me a spare key so
I’ll be able to get in... whenever
I want.

Laura looks like she’s about to be sick.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Is everything okay with Bre? You
look really upset.
Green (07/25/2016) 74.

LAURA
It’s just a stupid fight. I don’t
know. I really just want to be
alone right now.

BRUCE
Of course! Feel better, okay? She’s
not worth getting mad about.

Laura gives him a forced smile, which he returns with a

sincere one, before heading towards the front door. Laura
doesn’t move until she hears the door shut. She lets out a
breath of relief.

76 EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAWN 76

Bre walks out of her house in her workout clothes, turning

her music on, and putting her earbuds in. She stretches each
leg, before starting off on a steady jog down the street. Not
a single neighbor is around.

Not more than fifty feet from her house, a car pulls out of
one of the connecting streets, and turns onto Bre’s. It
follows close behind her as she jogs, unbeknownst to Bre as
her music blasts into her ears. The car is instantly
recognizable as Bruce’s car.

As Bre reaches an intersection, she slows her pace and turns

her head to each side, waiting for a car to pass. As she
does, she finally notices Bruce’s car behind her, which has
also slowed down.

She briefly looks at it suspiciously, but can’t make out

who’s behind the wheel. Not wanting to draw too much
attention to herself, Bre continues jogging down the street.
Bruce’s car starts to speed up again and follow her.

Bre tries to concentrate on her jogging, but keeps nervously

looking over her shoulder at the car. It follows close behind
her.

Bre finally stops abruptly and rips out her head phones,
causing the car to quickly brake. She turns around and starts
walking towards the car, shielding her eyes from the sun in
an attempt to see who’s inside to no avail.

The car speeds forward and swerves around Bre. She watches as *
it rockets down the road, then takes a quick left hand turn
and vanishes.

BRE
Asshole.
75.

Bre shakes it off before putting her earbuds back in and

taking off down the road, once again. She reaches another
intersection and halts at the stop sign. When the coast is
clear, she steps out into the street.

From seemingly nowhere, Bruce’s car ROCKETS into FRAME. Bre

turns at the last second to see the front bumper hurtling for
her as we...

SMASH TO BLACK

77 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - ENGLISH CLASS - DAY 77

All of the students are taking their seats as Bruce greets

them on their way in. The bell RINGS and Bruce closes the
door. Parker is behind Laura, but Bre is missing from the
seat beside her.

78 EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY 78

Laura is on her phone while leaving school.

LAURA
(to the phone)
Hey, Bre. I was hoping to talk to
you today. I don’t like being mad
at you. Can you call me back?

She hangs up the phone and looks back at the school. She can
see Bruce standing in the window of the English classroom,
staring at her. She quickens her pace.

79 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM 79

Laura enters the room to find Sandy waiting for her, still in
her work clothes. She looks upset.

LAURA
Hey, mom. What’s up?

SANDY
It’s Bre. They brought her into the
hospital this morning. She was hit
by a car while jogging.

LAURA
What? Is she okay!?!

SANDY
Uh... she will be. A couple broken
bones and a concussion.
Green (07/25/2016) 76.

LAURA
Did they get who did it?

SANDY
No. There were no witnesses, and
she couldn’t see the driver.

LAURA
That’s it.

Laura storms out of the room.

SANDY
Laura, where are you going!?

The front door slams shut as Laura leaves the house.

80 INT. POLICE STATION - DAY 80

Laura is at the front desk, arguing with the on duty OFFICER.

LAURA
I’m telling you, it was Bruce Kane.
He also attacked Parker Lowe at the
school.

The police officer waits an uncomfortably long time and then *

points at a TV. It’s another news broadcast featuring Bruce *
and Casey. *

OFFICER *
THAT Bruce Kane? *

LAURA *
Yes. *

OFFICER *
The hero. *

LAURA *
Yes, everyone keeps saying that. I
get it. But I’m telling you, he hit
Bre.

OFFICER
Did you witness the accident?

LAURA
No.
(beat)
But... I mean...
Green (07/25/2016) 77.

LAURA (CONT'D)
I told him how I got into a fight
with her last night, and today
she’s in a hospital bed.

OFFICER *
Look, I’m going to be honest. *
You’re not giving me anything to go *
on here. *

LAURA
So you’re not going to do anything?

OFFICER
Without any evidence or witnesses?
You’re talking about the law here.
We can’t just go arresting people
because you’ve got some kind of
hunch!

81 EXT. POLICE STATION - DAY 81

Laura storms down the steps in her own world and immediately
CRASHES into someone. She looks up and sees Bruce standing in
front of her.

BRUCE
Hi, Laura.

A scared Laura backs up.

LAURA
Bruce. Did you follow me here?

BRUCE
What? No. I’m meeting my parents
for dinner down the street. What
ere you doing at the police
station?

LAURA
Oh... I was just trying to see if
there was any information about
what happened to Bre.

BRUCE
Why would you care. Aren’t you
really mad at her? That’s what you
said yesterday.

LAURA
Yeah, I mean, we got into a fight,
but she’s still my best friend.
78.

BRUCE
Best friends don’t fight, Laura.
You shouldn’t be so back and forth
on who you keep close to you.

LAURA
I’ve got to go.

Laura starts walking away, but Bruce grabs her arm.

BRUCE
Hey. What are you doing tomorrow
night? We should go out.

LAURA
Isn’t that, like, against the
school rules?

BRUCE
I won’t tell if you won’t.

Laura looks conflicted.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Alison told me not to ask you, but
I figured I’d give it a shot.

LAURA
You talk about me with Alison?

BRUCE
Yeah. All the time. She’s usually
great with advice. So what do you
say?

LAURA
Uh... tomorrow’s mom’s late night
at the hospital. I’m on Chloe duty.

BRUCE
Maybe I can stop by then.

LAURA
Can I let you know? I’m just still
really far behind on a lot of
homework from the time I missed.

BRUCE
Sure.

Bruce smiles as she walks away.

Green (07/25/2016) 79.

82 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - FIRST FLOOR - NIGHT 82

We TRACK through the empty first floor of the house. It’s

completely silent and still. We reach the front door and the
BOLT LOCK suddenly turns, unlocking. *

The door opens up and Bruce walks in, placing his spare keys
back into his pocket. He looks around before walking up the
stairs.

83 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER 83

Laura is asleep in her bed as the door to her room opens up.
Bruce appears and enters, quietly looking at all her stuff.
The portrait she drew of Nick is now framed on her wall. He
glares at it. *

He walks over to Laura’s bed before and briefly watches her

as she sleeps, before climbing into her bed beside her. He
pushes in close to her, wrapping his arm around waist and
taking in a deep breath of her scent.

84 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - DAY 84

Laura wakes up and there’s no sign of Bruce. She stretches

and her nose begins to twitch. She starts smelling the sheets
beside her and recognizes the scent.

She rises up in a panic and looks around the room. She

notices the portrait of Nick is no longer in its place. The
frame lies on the ground as if it fell off.

85 EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY 85

Laura reluctantly walks towards the school amongst the rest

of the students. She pauses when she sees Bruce inside of the
school, chatting with another teacher.

Before he notices her, she turns around, and heads in the

opposite direction.

86 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - DAY 86

Laura enters the kitchen to see Sandy sitting at the table

with a cup of coffee.

LAURA
Mom, we have to talk.
Green (07/25/2016) 80.

SANDY
Yes, we do. You want to tell me
where you’ve been all day? I know
it wasn’t at school!

LAURA
Who told you that?

SANDY
Bruce.

LAURA
Of course.

SANDY
He also said you were at the police
station last night trying to blame
him for what happened to Bre?
Laura, what’s going on? I thought
we were starting over after the
accident.

LAURA
I know you think Bruce is the
second coming, but I’m telling you,
he’s certifiable. He was in the
house last night!

SANDY
Laura, stop. *

LAURA
You think I’m lying!? Great. Trust
the stranger over your own
daughter.

SANDY
I honestly don’t know what to think
anymore! I’m trying to give you the
benefit of the doubt here! You’re
skipping school again, you’re
unreliable with Chloe, and you’re
accusing some poor guy of running
your best friend off the road!? Is
this because of your father?

LAURA
Give me a break! This has nothing
to do with Dad! Now I’m starting to
see why he left you!

Sandy looks at her with a stern expression, holding back her

emotions.
Green (07/25/2016) 81.

SANDY
Okay.

Sandy rises up and puts her mug in the sink and rinses it
out.

LAURA
Mom...

SANDY
Just... *

Sandy raises her hand as if she’s about to lecture Laura, but *

instead simply shakes her head and leaves the room. *

87 INT. RESTAURANT - DAY 87 *

It’s the same restaurant that had catered the fundraiser. *

Parker is bussing a table when Laura approaches him. He rolls
his eyes immediately upon seeing her.

PARKER
And my day is complete. *

LAURA
Can’t run away from me now.

PARKER
Sure I can.

Parker puts his bussing tray down and walks into the Men’s
room. Laura lets out a frustrated sigh as she looks around
the sparsely populated restaurant. When she’s sure no one is
looking, she follows him. *

88 INT. RESTAURANT - MEN’S ROOM - CONTINUOUS 88

Laura walks in as Parker stands at the urinal. He catches a

glimpse of her out of the corner of his eye as she locking
the deadbolt, causing him to quickly try to zip up his pants.

PARKER
What the hell, Laura!?

LAURA
Oh, please, like I’ve never seen
one before.

PARKER
You’re going to get me fired.
Green (07/25/2016) 82.

LAURA
Listen, I believe you about Bruce.
I think he’s the one who hit Bre,
too.

PARKER
Yeah, well, go tell it to the cops
then. I want nothing to do with it.

LAURA
I tried. They won’t do anything.
I’m scared, Parker. He’s following
me everywhere. You’re the only one *
I can trust.

PARKER
I don’t know.

LAURA
Look, I know you’re pissed at me. I
swear, I never had any feelings for
Bruce. I still think about Nick
every day. You have no idea how
much I cared about him.

Parker contemplates for a moment.

PARKER
What are we supposed to do? We’re
kids, Laura.

LAURA
I want to go talk to his ex-
girlfriend, Alison. I looked up the
family and I found her sister on
Facebook. They live in Stonington.
Maybe she can help talk some sense *
in to him.

PARKER
(with a sigh)
All right. I’ll pick you up in the
morning.

A smile of relief crosses Laura’s face

LAURA
Thank you.

She turns to leave when he stops her.

Green (07/25/2016) 83.

PARKER
Laura? I lied to you before. Nick *
was never going to break up with
you.

In response, she playfully messes up his hair.

LAURA
Don’t go ugly crying on me now.

89 EXT. LIZ’S HOUSE - DAY 89

Parker and Laura get out of Parker’s car and approach the
front door of the large, beautiful home.

PARKER
So, is there like a game plan? Are
you going to distract Alison while
I go searching her room for dirt?

LAURA
Relax, Nancy Drew. We’re just going
to ask her to talk to him.

They reach the door and Laura presses her finger against the
doorbell. It CHIMES inside the house, followed soon by Liz
answering the door.

LAURA (CONT’D)
Hi, Liz. I don’t know if you
remember me...

LIZ
Laura, of course. Come in.

LAURA
Thanks.

Parker and Laura follow Liz into the house.

90 INT. LIZ’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS 90

Liz leads them into the living room and gestures for them to
sit down.

LAURA
This is Parker.

LIZ
Nice to meet you. So, what brings
you here? Everything okay with
Bruce?
Green (07/25/2016) 84.

PARKER
Not in the least.

Laura jabs him.

LIZ
What’s wrong?

LAURA
We’re... worried about him. I was
hoping we’d be able to talk to
Alison.

A confused look crosses Liz’s face.

LIZ
She’s... not here. How much has
Bruce told you about Alison?

LAURA
Not a lot. He said things were
complicated between them, but that
they still talk all the time.

LIZ
Oh... are you sure he said that?

LAURA
Yeah.

LIZ
Have you actually heard him talking
to her?

LAURA
He was on the phone with her the
other day.

LIZ
I think maybe I should talk to him. *

LAURA
Please don’t! He doesn’t know we’re
here. We really would like to...
help him.

LIZ
Then you need to tell me exactly *
what’s going on. *

LAURA
Did he ever get... violent with *
Alison? *
Green (07/25/2016) 85.

Liz looks as if she’s starting to grow nervous. *

LIZ
No, Bruce was always good to her. *
He was a nice guy. A little quiet, *
I guess, but Alison really loved *
him. *

Parker notices a picture on the mantel with Bruce and a GIRL

in it. Bruce is just barely visible behind another picture *
placed in front of it. He gets up and walks towards it, *
revealing Bruce in the image. *

PARKER
Is that her?

LIZ
Yeah. That’s Ali.

Liz and Laura get up and walk towards the picture. It’s
ALISON and Bruce at prom. Alison is wearing the same blue
dress that Laura wore to the fundraiser. *

Around her neck is the same necklace. *

Parker mouths “WHAT. THE. HELL.” to Laura.

LIZ (CONT’D)
She looks like you a little bit. I
guess Bruce has a type.

LAURA
Is she coming home soon?

Liz becomes emotional as tears begin to form in her eyes.

LIZ
I don’t know who Bruce is talking
to, but Alison died almost four
years ago.

PARKER
Shut. Up. How?

LAURA
Parker?

LIZ
No, it’s fine. It was a car
accident. Bruce took it really *
hard. He’s always blamed himself. *

LAURA
Uh... we have to go.
Green (07/25/2016) 86.

LIZ
Okay. I mean, is there anything I
can do to help? If Bruce is in *
trouble... or... *

LAURA
No. Thank you, though.

Parker and Laura hurry to the front door as Liz stands there,
beyond confused.

LIZ
Well... bye. I guess.

91 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 91

Bruce is back out on his boat, once again chumming the water.
He stares out at the blood trail he’s leaving in the water as
he starts to squint as if he has a bad headache.

FLASH TO:

92 INT./EXT. BRUCE’S CAR/STREET - NIGHT - FLASHBACK 92

Bruce and ALISON speed down the road in their prom attire.
The song that Bruce keeps playing is coming out of the car
radio. Alison wears the exact necklace Bruce gave Laura. *

BRUCE
I can’t believe you’re doing this
to me. Tonight.

ALISON
It’s not going to work when we
graduate. I don’t want to end it,
but it’s for the best. We have to
move on.

BRUCE
But you’re my everything.

BACK TO:

93 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 93

Bruce starts panting and getting upset, looking like he’s

about to cry.

FLASH TO:
Green (07/25/2016) 87.

94 INT./EXT. BRUCE’S CAR/STREET - NIGHT - FLASHBACK 94

The car speeds down the road.

ALISON
Bruce, slow down!

A crying Bruce shakes his head and goes faster.

BRUCE
I can’t live without you. I won’t
live without you.

Bruce swerves the car into the other lane as oncoming

headlights approach.

BACK TO:

95 EXT. OCEAN - DAY 95

Bruce smacks the chum scoop on the bucket in quick

succession. He takes out his phone and brings up his
voicemails. *

ALISON
(on voicemail)
Hey, babe! It’s Ali. I miss you.
Call me back, okay? I want to see
you soon.

The sound of her voice begins calming Bruce down as he

catches his breath. Once he’s composed, he dials Laura’s *
number. It rings a few times before going to voicemail. *

Bruce puts his phone away, and pulls another one of his
pocket. The wallpaper on it shows us that it’s Nick’s phone.
He hits the command button.

BRUCE
(to the phone)
Find Laura.

PHONE VOICE
Finding Laura.

As the GPS app opens up, Bruce can see that she’s home. He
heads for the wheel, but stops when he notices the SHARK FIN
pop out of the water not far from him.

Bruce picks up a SPEAR GUN and approaches the edge of the

boat. He aims it at the creature, which begins swimming
closer and closer to the boat.
Green (07/25/2016) 88.

It’s mere inches away when Bruce aims the spear gun, but at
the last moment, he pauses and retracts the weapon. He
watches the shark as it swims right by.

96 EXT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LATER 96 *

Bruce is at the front door, pressing the doorbell. Sandy

quickly opens it.

SANDY
Bruce. Hey, hon. Is everything
okay?

BRUCE
Laura said you were working *
tonight.

SANDY
Nope. First night off in over a *
week. Lucky me, huh?

BRUCE
I she here? I’ve been trying to
call her phone.

SANDY
No. She forgot her phone charging
in the kitchen. I honestly don’t
know where she went off to.

Bruce is growing angrier by the second, but keeps it hidden

as best he can. Bruce begins breathing heavily.

BRUCE
(low, to himself)
I told you not to ask her out.
She’s no good.

SANDY
Bruce, you look a little flushed.
Are you feeling all right?

BRUCE
No, I AM NOT FEELING ALL RIGHT!

Sandy is surprised by his reaction.

SANDY
I think you should go now.

Bruce is immediately calm and smiling, as if turning a switch

inside himself.
Green (07/25/2016) 89.

BRUCE
Be a dear, and tell Laura I stopped
by, okay?

Sandy starts closing the door, giving him a nod.

SANDY
Sure.

97 EXT./INT. SUBURBAN STREET/BRUCE’S CAR - LATER 97

Bruce sits in his car with his lights out a few houses down
from Laura’s. He watches as Parker’s car pulls up in front of
the house. Laura gets out, and Parker comes out of the
driver’s side.

Bruce can see them exchange a few words before leaning in and
hugging each other. He tightens his grip on the steering
wheel as Laura heads towards the front door. *

98 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - ENGLISH CLASS - DAY 98

Bruce enters the classroom in the morning and notices a

familiar box on top of his desk. He opens it up to reveal the
blue dress, and the small box with the necklace.

He slams the lid of the box on the desk before tossing it

across the room.

99 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - LATER 99

Bruce stalks down the hallway with the now bent box in one
hand. He spots Laura walking away from her locker amongst the
crowd of students. He quickens his pace to catch up with her.
He grabs hold of Laura’s arm and pulls towards the JANITOR’S
CLOSET.

LAURA
Bruce!?!

100 INT. HIGH SCHOOL - JANITOR’S CLOSET - CONTINUOUS 100

Bruce pushes Laura into the closet with force and locks the
deadbolt behind him. Laura immediately tries to push through
him to the door, but he drops the box and holds her in place
with force.
90.

BRUCE
Did you think you could just sleep
with another guy behind my back and
I wouldn’t care!?

LAURA
What the hell are you talking
about!?!

BRUCE
I saw you with Parker. I can’t
believe you’d cheat on me like
that!

LAURA
Parker is just my friend! And even
if he was more, it’s none of your
business! We are NOT dating, Bruce!
My personal life is none of your
business!

BRUCE
I should have listened to Alison.
She told me you were trouble.

LAURA
Alison’s dead, Bruce!

Bruce’s in control demeanor quickly switches to one of anger

and sadness. He starts punching boxes on the shelves beside
him as Laura backs up in fear

BRUCE
SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! You
don’t know anything about her! You
take for granted everything I’ve
given you! I saved you! I’m in
charge of your life now! I decide
what you do!

Laura cowers towards the back of the closet, scared to come

anywhere near Bruce. His anger subsides as he stares directly
in her eyes, getting closer to her and placing his hand on
her face.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
I’m taking you out to dinner
tomorrow night. And we’re going to
have a good time.

Bruce leans in and forces a kiss on Laura, as she fights the

tears about to pour out of her eyes.
91.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
You understand me?

Laura reluctantly nods. Bruce smiles as he bends down and

picks the dress box up, handing it to her.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
I’ll pick you up at 8. You choose
the place.

Bruce gives her a wink then unlocks the door, and leaves
Laura alone in the closet. She lets out the breath and tears
she’s been holding back.

101 EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - LATER 101

The students file out of the school for the day. Among them
is Parker. Laura quickly grabs hold of him.

LAURA
I need your help. What are you
doing tomorrow?

102 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - FOYER - NIGHT 102

Laura holds a screwdriver in her hand, putting in the final

screw of a new CHAIN LOCK on the front door. She locks it,
then heads upstairs.

103 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER 103

Laura enters her room and changes into her sleep wear. A POV
from inside her opened closet watches from behind the clothes
as she crawls into bed.

104 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - DAY 104

Laura wakes up, and as she stands up, she notices the framed
portrait of Nick has fallen on the floor again, but this time
the glass is smashed.

LAURA
Dammit.

Laura bends down to pick it up, trying to be careful not to

cut herself while collecting the pieces of glass. Something
in the reflection of the glass catches her attention that
causes her to literally drop what she’s doing.
Green (07/25/2016) 92.

Laura rises up and reaches for her neck. She’s wearing the
necklace from Bruce.

105 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - DUSK 105

Laura sits at her vanity, once again in the blue dress. She
puts the finishing touches on her hair, which now looks
almost identical to how Alison’s hair was in the prom
picture. When she’s done, she places the necklace around her
neck and clasps it.

106 INT. RESTAURANT - EVENING 106 *

It’s the same restaurant that Parker works at. Laura and
Bruce sit at a small table across from each other, going over
the menu. Laura is holding back her nerves as Bruce looks
happy and comfortable. He puts down his menu and looks at
her.

BRUCE
God, you’re beautiful, Ali.

LAURA
Thank you...

BRUCE
Did I tell you I’m still looking
for the shark? No sign of it yet,
but I’m not going to give up.

LAURA
You really don’t have to do that.
I’m sure it’s long gone by now.

BRUCE
Shark’s are territorial. You have *
to admire their tenacity. *

Laura smiles uncomfortably. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
I’ll find it. The whole town is
counting on me. I have to give them
that headline and show them I’m
more than just Richard Kane’s son.

LAURA
I always thought you were more than
that.
93.

BRUCE
I know you did. From the moment you
looked at me when I pulled you out
of the water, I knew it.

Parker appears behind Bruce, bussing a table. Laura makes eye

contact with him and a small nod, but quickly gives her
attention back to Bruce before he notices.

Parker puts his tray down on the table and sneaks behind the
wall leading to the bathrooms. He pulls his phone out and
turns the video camera on, poking around the corner.

LAURA
I thought about what you said about
Bre. How best friends don’t fight.

BRUCE
Really?

LAURA
Yeah. You were absolutely right. I
can’t have people like that in my
life.

BRUCE
I’m glad you’re realizing that.

LAURA
I wanted to say thank you. For what
you did to her. I know you were
looking out for me.

Bruce grabs her hands.

BRUCE
Hey. You’re welcome. If anyone else
tries treating you badly, I’ll take
care of them.

Laura puts on a fake smile as she looks over towards Parker.

He got the entire thing on camera, but his MANAGER is heading
towards him. Laura tries to give him a nod to he boss as a
warning, but it’s too late.

MANAGER
Parker, what do you think you’re
doing? Get back to work!

Bruce looks around and sees Parker standing a few feet behind
him with his phone still in his hand, recording.

PARKER
I... uh...
Green (07/25/2016) 94.

BRUCE
Laura, what’s going on?

LAURA
(to Parker)
Did you get it?

Parker nods his head as he quickly picks his tray up and gets
back to work.

BRUCE
You recorded me?

Laura rises up out of her seat.

LAURA
It’s over, Bruce. Leave me and my *
friends alone and stay the hell out *
of my house! *

Laura takes the necklace off and throws it down on the table.

LAURA (CONT’D)
You understand me? *

Bruce looks at the necklace in front of him and quietly nods.

He doesn’t get angry, or violent. He just sits there with a
stern look on his face. Laura storms away towards Parker.

LAURA (CONT’D)
Send me the video.

PARKER
I’ll pick you up when I’m out. *
(to Bruce, gloating) *
The cops will listen to her now, *
Mr. Kane. *

Bruce doesn’t acknowledge him. Before leaving, Laura looks *

back at the table. Bruce continues to sit there in silence,
rhythmically tapping the pendant of the necklace on the
table.

107 INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM - NIGHT 107

Laura has placed Nick’s portrait in a new frame. She hangs it

on a hook at she talks on the phone. She looks over to the
vanity where the blue dress is slumped over the chair.
Green (07/25/2016) 95.

108 EXT. LAURA’S HOUSE - NIGHT 108

Laura walks out the front door to the GARBAGE CANS in the
driveway. She opens the lid and tosses the dress in. Before
heading back inside, she closes the lid, but a piece of the
dress spills out.

109 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - FOYER - CONTINUOUS 109

Laura closes the door as she enters, and locks the deadbolt
and the chain lock.

110 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - CHLOE’S BEDROOM - LATER 110

Laura stands in the doorway of the room, watching Chloe as

she sleeps. She heads back into the hallway, shutting the
door behind her.

111 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - LATER 111

Laura sits on the couch watching TV. There’s a RUSTLE coming

from somewhere in the house. She turns the TV off and
listens. It comes again, followed by the faint sound of
FOOTSTEPS

Laura gets up and starts quietly walking around, trying to

listen for where the footsteps are coming from. The house is
dark and once again silent.

112 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - DINING ROOM - CONTINUOUS 112 *

Laura walks into the dining room and turns the light on, it’s *
empty. However, she notices the curtain billowing from an
open window. She hears the footsteps again before closing the *
window shut and latching the lock.

113 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - STAIRWAY/UPSTAIRS HALL - MOMENTS LATER

113

Laura cautiously climbs the stairs one step at a time up to

the second floor landing.

LAURA
Chloe?

There’s a CREAK somewhere in the house and it nearly makes

her jump out of her skin. Several doors are open, and there’s *
nothing but darkness inside and shadows inside.
96.

She quickly flips on the hall light as she approaches Chloe’s

room and rips the door open. Chloe’s bed is empty. Laura
starts frantically running in and out of the other bedrooms.

LAURA (CONT’D)
Chloe!?! Chloe, where are you!?!

No sign of her. Laura pulls the hall closet open, only to

find towels, then heads for the closed bathroom door. She
reaches for the doorknob just as it opens up, startling her
and making her jump.

Chloe stands in front of her, still practically half asleep.

CHLOE
Why are you yelling?

Laura clutches onto the confused Chloe with relief.

LAURA
It’s nothing. Let’s get you back to
bed.

114 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - CHLOE’S BEDROOM - LATER 114

Chloe is once again asleep in her bed. Laura stands beside

her, nervously looking out the window at the empty driveway,
then glancing down at her phone. No messages. She starts
typing to Parker, “Are you on your way?”

She looks at the phone, waiting a moment for a reply, but

still nothing. Laura heads to the door, but before she
reaches it, a car horn BLARES from the driveway. She’s
startled by the sound, but relaxes when she realizes what it
is.

She heads to the window and looks out to see Parker’s car in
the driveway. The horn goes off again, followed immediately
by a text alert from Parker. It simply reads, “Here,” and is
followed by a message that her battery is almost dead.

115 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER 115

Laura plugs her phone into the charger on the kitchen

counter, then heads towards the front door of the house.
Green (07/25/2016) 97.

116 EXT. LAURA’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS 116

Laura opens up the door and stands at the stoop as Parker’s

car is still parked in the driveway, running and with the
lights on. Laura gives him a wave to come in, but there’s no
movement.

She can see the silhouette of him sitting in the front seat
and begins walking over towards the car. She passes the
garbage cans, and unbeknownst to her, the lid is now open,
and the dress is missing.

As she continues to the driver’s side of the car, Bruce steps

into FRAME behind her, and sneaks into the house before she
notices him. She reaches the driver’s side of the car and
knocks on the window.

LAURA
Parker?

Still no movement from him inside. She opens the door and
gasps in horror at the sight. Parker sits there lifeless in
the front seat of the car with a clear plastic bag wrapped *
around his face. His mouth is agape in a silent scream. *

Laura SCREAMS and takes off for the front door.

117 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - FOYER - CONTINUOUS 117

Laura rushes inside and slams the door shut behind her, *
locking both locks. We FOLLOW her as she rushes through the *
empty house and into the kitchen.

118 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS 118

There, she grabs for her phone, only to discover that the
front screen as been SMASHED. There’s no life left in it.
Laura stares at it in disbelief and the realization that
she’s not alone in the house hits her.

Suddenly, the radio in the living starts playing. It’s

Bruce’s regular song. It echoes throughout the entire first
floor. Laura heads to the back door and reaches for the
handle when she suddenly stops.

LAURA
Chloe...

Laura open a drawer and pulls out a KNIFE. She holds it up,
ready to stab at any movement, as she makes her way into the
living room.
Green (07/25/2016) 98.

119 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS 119

Laura is cautious with every step, searching all around her

as the song continues to play. She flips the living room
light on to illuminate the room. Bruce sits in a chair in the
corner of the room with another bouquet of flowers in his
hands.

BRUCE
Surprise!

LAURA
(trying to keep it
together)
You’re not supposed to be here,
Bruce.

He stands up and places the flowers down, and starts walking

towards her.

BRUCE
I’ve come to forgive you, Ali. I
don’t care what happened with
Parker. We can move on from this.

Laura’s hand holding the knife is trembling as she tries to

hold back her tears of fear.

LAURA
Don’t come any further!

BRUCE
Awe, baby. I’m giving you another
chance! Put the knife down. I know
you’d never hurt me.

Bruce reaches for the knife and Laura quickly pulls her hands
back from his and stabs the knife into his leg, causing Bruce
to SCREAM in pain. He quickly rips it out and throws it on *
the ground. *

120 INT. LAURA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - SECONDS LATER 120

Bruce turns the corner into the kitchen, only to have Laura
waiting for him with a chair being held legs out. She rushes
at him and drives the chair into his stomach, knocking him
down on the ground.

Laura quickly grabs ANOTHER KNIFE out of the open drawer and
jumps on top of him, holding it at his neck.

LAURA
Don’t move!
Green (07/25/2016) 99.

Bruce smiles at her.

BRUCE
Oh, Laura. It doesn’t end here.

Bruce quickly reaches for her stomach and digs his fingers in *
to where her shark wound is. Laura cries out in pain, *
doubling over as he digs his fingers into the wound. She *
rolls off of Bruce onto the floor. *

She grasps futilely at his arm as she loses consciousness *

from the pain. *

121 EXT. MARINA - LATER 121

The trunk to Parker’s car pops open to reveal Parker’s dead

body and Laura inside. Laura is tied up and gagged. She looks
up to Bruce standing over her. *

BRUCE
Come on, darling. Time to go
fishing.

122 EXT. OCEAN/BRUCE’S BOAT - LATER 122 *

The boat coasts through the sea as Laura is still tied and *
gagged, lying on the rear deck. The sound of the engine *
rumbles through her. *

She hears SPLASHING and twists her body towards the stern, *
trying to make out the source of the sound. *

The movement makes her wince. Her shirt is matted to her *

side, where the wound has re-opened. *

There are lights on the side of the boat that show a few feet *
of the water, but beyond that, she can only see darkness
surrounding her. She sees the spear gun not far from her,
still loaded.

Bruce slings a scoop full of chum overhead and into the water *
behind the boat. *

The engine cuts off and Bruce climbs down to lean over Laura, *
placing the disgusting chum bucket on the ground near her and *
pulling out her mouth gag. *

BRUCE
Not going to need this out here. No
one’s going to be able to find us.
Green (07/25/2016) 100.

Bruce grabs the chum and steps over her. He dips the scoop in *
and starts slinging it into the water around the boat. *

LAURA
Bruce, what are you doing!?!

BRUCE
You don’t appreciate what I’ve done
for you. I gave you back your life!
Rescued you from death!

Laura shifts herself to be seated upright. *

LAURA
You know how grateful I am for
that!

BRUCE
WELL, YOU DON’T SHOW IT!

LAURA
I’m sorry about Alison, Bruce! I
really am. But I’m not her.

Bruce laughs to himself.

BRUCE
You’re right! Alison would never
take life for granted the way that
you do!

Bruce continues to throw the chum in the water. The shark’s

fin suddenly thrashes out of the water and Laura’s eyes go *
wide with fear when she sees it.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
There you is. I told you it was *
still around.

LAURA *
Bruce, no...

Bruce climbs back up to Laura and bends down towards her. *

BRUCE
Awe, it’s a shame we can’t make *
headlines with this one. Killed by *
the same shark you were rescued *
from. They media would have eaten *
it up.
(beat)
No pun intended.
Green (07/25/2016) 101.

Without warning, Laura hurtles her head into Bruce’s,

knocking him backwards and sending blood shooting out of his
nose. As he falls back, Laura quickly raises her duct taped
arms up to her mouth and rips through it with her teeth.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Well that wasn’t very ladylike! *

Bruce recovers himself as Laura grabs the spear gun, holding *

it on Bruce, who hesitates as she reaches down to free her *
legs. *

LAURA *
Don’t come any closer. *

She shuffles back into the boat’s cabin. Bruce slowly moves *
towards her. *

LAURA (CONT’D) *
Back up! *

He takes one small step back. As she frees her legs, he moves *
for her suddenly and she fires, hitting Bruce directly in the *
shoulder and sending him reeling backwards. *

Bruce WAILS in pain as Laura clambors to the door with the *

empty spear gun still in her hands.

The shark is feeding in the water behind Bruce. She clenches *

her teeth, conflicted, as he examines the spear wound. *

BRUCE *
You stupid bitch! *

Laura slams the cabin door, sealing him outside behind the *
glass. *

123 INT. BELOW DECK - CONTINUOUS 123

Having bought herself a few moments, Laura searches around *

the small space.

BRUCE
(O.S.)
Laura!

She tears through the place and quickly finds the spears for
the gun. Laura attempts to reload it, but struggles with
getting it to lock into place. She presses it up against her
chest, but still can’t get it. *

Laura tosses the spear gun down, and starts going through the
room.
Green (07/25/2016) 102.

She opens up a CABINET and a flutter of PICTURES come flying

down. Laura picks them up and realizes they’re all photos of
her. Some were taken at the hospital at night while she was
sleeping and a few of her walking the halls at school.

Laura is shocked by the sight of the pictures. She opens up

another cabinet to find even more. These ones are of her
undressing in her room, taken from inside of her closet.

Bruce wails as he pulls the spear free. The slider opens. *

Laura looks for someplace to hide and retreats further into *

the cabin, pulling open the small door to the sleeping *
quarters and backing into the dark room. *

Bruce enters the cabin. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Play nice, now. *

Laura lets out a muffled scream when she bumps into someone *
in the room. It takes her a brief moment to realize it’s a *
MANNEQUIN staring back at her. It wears the blue dress and
Alison’s necklace.

Hung up on the walls of the room are all the newspaper *

clippings covering Alison’s death. A quote from Bruce, “IT
SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME, TOO!” headlines one of the articles.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
(O.S.)
So you’ve met Alison.

Laura turns to the door and Bruce stands there with blood
dripping out of his severe spear wound. He stumbles towards
Laura and Alison. *

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Beautiful, isn’t she?

He reaches his hand out and starts patting the mannequin’s

hair, then fingers the necklace. *

BRUCE (CONT’D)
(to himself)
I knew you wouldn’t leave me, baby.
(answering himself)
Of course not, Ali. You’re my
everything. I can’t live without
you.

Bruce leans in to kiss the mannequin, and Laura seizes the

opportunity to grab the small FIRE EXTINGUISHER, and swing it *
at him. *
Green (07/25/2016) 103.

He raises his hands and blocks the blow. She swings again and *
he catches it. *

BRUCE (CONT’D) *
Laura, you... *

She squeezes the handle, spraying it at Bruce’s face. He *

cries out at he rips it from her hands and turns his face *
away from the blast. Laura takes off for the deck. *

124 EXT. OCEAN/BRUCE’S BOAT - CONTINUOUS 124 *

Laura bursts out of the cabin and looks out into the water. *
The shark is still there, taunting her. Bruce comes racing *
towards her from inside and Laura takes off towards the bow *
of the boat. *

It’s a narrow walkway, and her feet slip with every step. She *
almost falls into the water, but catches herself, just as the *
dark silhouette passes by her side of the boat. *

As she reaches the bow, Bruce approaches from the other side. *

She darts for the front open window of the cabin and climbs *
in head first. *

Bruce races for her and gets there just as her feet are
sticking out. He grabs hold of one, but she’s able to kick
herself free. He lunges for the window just as Laura slams it *
shut.

BRUCE
YOU CAN’T HIDE ON A BOAT, LAURA!

Instead of trying for the window, he heads down the narrow *

walkway towards the door at the stern. As he’s about to reach *
it, Laura pops out from the cabin with the necklace in her *
hands. She holds it over the railing, above of water.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Don’t do it!

Laura looks into Bruce’s pleading eyes.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
Please! It’s all I have left of
her!

For a moment, Laura looks as if she feels bad for Bruce, but
that quickly washes away to anger as she tosses the necklace
into the water.
Green (07/25/2016) 104.

BRUCE (CONT’D)
NO!

Without hesitation, Bruce dives into the water after it. *

UNDERNEATH THE WATER - Bruce swims towards the necklace which

begins to sink further and further down. Before he can reach
it, the SHARK appears from the shadows in front of him. Bruce
quickly pushes himself back, just barely missing the shark’s
teeth.

Laura peers over the ledge of the railing, trying to make out
what’s going on below. Suddenly, Bruce pops out of the water.
His hand reaches up and latches onto Laura’s arm. She cries
out as she’s pulled over the railing and into the water with
Bruce.

UNDER THE WATER - Laura is face to face with Bruce as she

tries desperately to pull her arm away from his grasp. The *
shark is approaching from behind her. Bruce’s eye widen in
fear as he starts pushing Laura towards the shark.

She turns around to see its teeth heading straight for them. *
At the last moment, she takes her free hand and jabs it into
Bruce’s spear wound, causing him to wither in pain and let
her go.

Laura swims up to the surface, her feet missing the shark’s

mouth by mere inches. Bruce lets out a muffled cry as the
shark’s mouth ENGULFS him.

Laura breaks through the surface of the water and quickly

swims back to the boat. She latches onto the railing and
pulls herself up back onto the boat.

She gasps for air as she tumbles onto the deck, before
getting back up to her feet. She looks down and can see the
red water illuminated by the lights around the boat. *

Laura stumbles towards Bruce’s jacket beside the wheel and *

searches through the pockets until she pulls out Nick’s
phone. She looks at the wallpaper picture of the two of them
for a brief moment with a smile, before dialing 911.

UNDER THE WATER - The necklace continues to float down into

the water, glistening as the lights from the boat hit it.
Bruce’s blood billows after it. *

125 EXT. MARINA - DAWN 125 *

The marina is lit up with blinking lights from police cars

and an ambulance. It’s a very similar, but much smaller scene *
than after Bruce rescued Laura. *
Green (07/25/2016) 105.

Laura sits with a blanket around her as a POLICE OFFICER

interviews her and an EMT looks at her pulled stitches. *

CHLOE
(O.S.)
Laura!

Laura looks up to see Sandy and Chloe running over towards

her. Laura rises to her feet and hugs them both.

SANDY
I’m so sorry, Laura. I should have
listened to you about Bruce. I
should have trusted you.

LAURA
It’s okay, Mom. I’m sorry for what
I said about Dad. I didn’t mean it.

SANDY
I know you didn’t.

LAURA
I’m going to try to do better. I
promise.

SANDY
We both will, honey.

They hug and walks towards the ambulance with her mother and
sister.
