Bluetooth Part-1 (1)

The document provides an overview of Bluetooth technology, detailing its features, architecture, frequency band, modulation, advantages, disadvantages, and applications. Bluetooth operates on the 2.4 GHz ISM band and utilizes a piconet and scatternet structure for device connectivity. It supports various applications such as data transfer, wireless peripherals, and personal area networks, while facing challenges like interference and performance bottlenecks.

Learning Outcomes

The learners will be able to:

1.List features of Bluetooth..
2.Describe Bluetooth Architecture with diagram.
3.Recall frequency band,modulation of Buletooth.
4.List advantages, disadvantages and applications of Bluetooth.
Features of Bluetooth

•It is implemented using IEEE 802.15 standard.

•Bluetooth used the ISM band at 2.4 GHz.
•It uses the FHSS technique.
•The specified rate of data transfer is 1 Mbps.
•Its maximum range is 10 m.
•It is a wireless PAN standard which uses radio links instead of wires.
•Bluetooth uses a form of TDMA called as TDD-TDMA.
•Type of modulation used:GFSK
•Bluetooth does not have a very good security
•It uses 1600 hops/sec
Bluetooth Architecture
Bluetooth Architecture

•A piconet is the type of connection that is formed between two or

more Bluetooth-enabled devices such as modern cell phones or
PDAs.
•Bluetooth enabled devices are “peer units” in that they are able to
act as either master or slave.
•However, when a piconet is formed between two or more
devices, one device takes the role of master and all other devices
assume a slave role for synchronization reasons.
•Piconets have 3 bit address space, which limits the maximum size of
a piconet to 8 devices that is 1 master and 7 slaves.
Bluetooth Architecture

•A scatternet is a number of interconnected piconets that supports

communication between more than 8 devices.
•Scatternets can be formed when a member of one piconet (either the
master or one of the slaves) elects to participate as a slave in a
second,separate piconet.
•The device participating in both piconets can relay data between members
of both ad hoc networks.
•Basic bluetooth protocol does not support this relaying the host software
of each device would need to manage it.
•Using this approach,it is possible to join together numerous piconets in to
large scatternet and to expand physical size of network beyond Bluetooth’s
limited range.
Frequency Band of Bluetooth

•The 2.4 GHz ISM band is used by the Bluetooth.

•This band is divided in to 79 channels and each channel is of
bandwidth 1 MHz.
Modulation of Bluetooth

•Bluetooth uses an advanced version of FSK,called GFSK (FSK

with Gaussian bandwidth filtering) so as to convert bits in to signals.
Advantages of Bluetooth

•One can create a personal area network at home or on the road with
Bluetooth-enabled devices such as
keyboard,mouse,scanner,PDA,laptop,cell phone etc.
•This network can automatically help synchronize
notes, calender, address book and also print pictures, receive
emails,access cell phone messages etc.
•It can even help consumers pay bills with credit card through
Bluetooth cash register if a Bluetootth PDA stores the card
information.
Disadvantages of Bluetooth

•Bluetooth communication does not support routing.

•The issues of handoffs have not been addressed.
•Due to master slave configuration, many times performance
degradation takes place due to bottlenecking at the master.
•Interference with WLAN is essential as WLAN and Bluetooth both
operate in the same ISM frequency band.
Applications of Bluetooth

•Short Message Service (SMS)

•Enhanced Message Service (EMS)
•Multimedia Message Service (MMS)
•Ad-hoc network of laptops for interactive conference.
•Transferring data, photographs from one cell phone to other cell phones or
computers and vice versa.
•Connecting a digital camera wirelessly to a mobile phone.
•Three in one phone where same phone functions as an intercom,a cordless phone
and a mobile phone.
•Mouse, printer, keyboard etc can be connected to a computer without using wires.
•Wireless head phones for mobile phones.
•Wireless interface between a computer and printer.
