The 2024 Case Study on Behavior Management examines children's behaviors in early childhood education and outlines strategies for teachers to address issues such as emotional regulation, rule-breaking, and exclusionary play. It emphasizes the importance of intentional teaching methods, including calming techniques, positive reinforcement, and conflict resolution. The study aims to provide actionable steps for educators to implement effective behavior management practices in the classroom.

Project Overview

To present our topic giving examples and strategies in how we could approach the situation as
teachers during a 10-15 minute presentation.
Include a 1-2 page resource for every person.

Background

Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs - focused on understanding children's behaviour and developing strategies
for effective parenting and classroom management. His work has suggested that children's
“misbehaviour” is driven by specific underlying motivations.
The Pyramid Model - a group of researchers developed this to give early educators a proactive
framework for promoting positive behaviour and preventing challenging behaviour.
We will take a look at all of this and more in the following slides.

What We Noticed In Our Observations

Child A was playing with a toy when Child B came over and took the toy away from Child A. Child
A got upset and started yelling and hitting the toy out of Child B's hands.
Multiple times a child was running inside of the classroom.
Child A and Child B excluding another child they don’t want to play with (Child C). Child C does
want to play with them.
A little girl becoming “difficult” when things don’t go her way in the routine of the classroom. She
begins to get emotional and cry.
Two children started fighting over an object in the dramatic play area. They pulled back and forth
on the object until one fell. That child got up and pushed the other child down saying “You’re not
my friend anymore”.

The Problem/Challenge/Issue
The child (A) physically tried to hit the toy out of the other child's hand (B). Child could not
regulate strong emotions.
Running indoors is against the school rules and often someone else gets bumped into and hurt
by mistake.
Child (C) being excluded by child (A) and child (B).
A child did not know how to regulate herself in a change of environment at school and projected
her frustrations at her peers and teachers.
Harm was caused to child (A) when child (B) pushing him. Which caused child (A) to not want to
be child (B)’s friend anymore.

Additional Factors That May Influence These Issues

Mental Health - Life events such as a loss of a pet and/or a family member
“Education” - Parents may not be able to regulate their own emotions, therefore setting a
negative example for the child.
Different Discipline Styles - If they are disciplined differently at home or not disciplined at home.
Life Transitions - Taken out of a unhealthy situation and/or a family member no longer living at
home.
Culture - Language difference, not understanding what is being said.

Steps + Strategies to Help Become More Intentional

Introducing Calming Strategies

Relaxation thermometer
Calming/Quiet corner in the classroom
Breathing
Positive Reinforcement and Feedback
Following a Consistent Routine and Schedule
Tolerance Self-Assessment
Compassion and Inclusion
Characteristics of Intentional Teaching (as listed in “The Intentional Teacher”)
High expectations
Planning and management
Learning-oriented
Engaging
Thoughtful questioning
Feedback

Best Practice

Self Regulation- Having a child use calming techniques to calm their emotions down with little or
no help from an adult.
Offering choices and opportunities for autonomy, providing leadership roles giving responsibility
Gaining trust of the child and encouraging their problem solving skills.
Positive Behavior Support - Reading Social Stories to prompt expected behaviors, Providing
cues and prompts about upcoming activities, etc.
Using positive reinforcement
Making adaptations for children with special needs and/or disabilities

Changes to Start Practicing Tomorrow

Self Regulation discussion

Talk with the child about different ways they can calm their body down.
Prompting
Provide cues and prompts about upcoming activities and transitions
Display a schedule with pictures
Providing positive attention and feedback for appropriate behavior

Conclusion

Our 2024 Case Study focused on Behavior Management in early childhood education settings. We
dove into the understanding of children's behaviors and developing strategies to manage them.
Various issues were observed in a classroom setting and examined, such as emotional regulation,
rule-breaking, exclusionary play, and physical conflicts among children. We then explored different
strategies for intentional teaching such as, calming techniques, positive reinforcement, and conflict
resolution to address these issues.
