Reflection of Light

(experimenting the law of reflection for grade 3)

NELLY ADEL / G3B ISM

======================
============
The question asked: What
happens when light hits a shiny
surface?
Materials:
-cardboard paper
-laser pointer
-mirror
Procedure: Glue the mirror
perpendicularly to a larger
piece of cardboard. Secure the
laser to the base, then sketch
approximate lines showing the
path of the laser rays. Draw the
normal line and measure the
angles of incidence and
reflection.
Hypothesis: the light will reflect
in the same direction of the
incident rays
Conclusion: light reflects in
opposite direction with the
angle of incidence equal to the
angle of reflection

Light.
Light is a type of energy that helps us see things
around us. It travels in straight line rays very
quickly and can come from sources (known as
luminous sources) like the Sun or light bulbs.
While non-luminous sources are like the moon or
trees. When light hits an object, it can reflect,
absorb, or pass through.

Reflection
Reflection happens when light bounces off a
surface. For example, when light hits a mirror, it
reflects back, allowing us to see a clear image of
ourselves.

A smooth surface, like a mirror, reflects light in a

predictable way, while rough surfaces, like a
brick, scatter light in many directions, which is
why you can’t see a clear reflection on a rough
surface.
When light reflects off a surface, the angle at
which it comes in (called the angle of
incidence) is equal to the angle at which it
bounces off (called the angle of reflection).
This means that if light rays hit a mirror at a 30°
angle, it will bounce off at the same 30° angle in
the opposite direction. We use an imaginary line
known as the normal, which is set at right angles
to the object of reflection. This creates the angles
of reflection and incidence mentioned.

Absorbtion
Sometimes, light can be absorbed by surfaces,
like a black shirt, which absorbs more light and
becomes warmer.

Light can also be reflected or absorbed

depending on the surface's smoothness, color,
and texture. Understanding how light behaves
helps us see things clearly and explains why
some surfaces reflect better than others!
