Echague, Isabela

NUR 113: BIOCHEMISTRY

Module Title:
Structure and Organization of Cells

Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, the students should be able to:
1. distinguish between a prokaryote and the eukaryote; and
2. correlate each organelle with their function.

Learning Content
All animals, plants and microorganisms are composed of cells. Cells are the fundamental units of life. There
are two types of cells based on the basic classification of organisms: eukaryotic cell and prokaryotic cell.

Prokaryotic cell
The prokaryotic organisms are the most abundant and widespread organisms.

Eukaryotic cell
Eukaryotic cell are cells found in eukaryotes which includes plants, animals, fungi, protozoans, yeasts and
some algae.

Learning Task
We will have a synchronous quiz on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 during our class schedule. Make
sure you have a stable internet connection during that time.

All answers in the learning activities will encoded in the official form posted/created in our google
classroom on or before the set deadline. All intellectual dishonesty will not be tolerated. Please do cite your
references.

SHORT RESPONSE (25 points). Answer each question briefly and correctly. Limit your response to 5
sentences. Each question is worth 5 points and will be assessed using this rubric:

5 points – The answers are well organized, comprehensive, accurate and complete. Key ideas are clearly
stated, explained, and well supported.
4 points – The answers are accurate and complete. Key ideas are stated and supported.
3 points – The answers are not comprehensive or completely stated. Key points are addressed but not well
supported.
2 points – The answers are partial or incomplete. Key points are not clear. Questions are not adequately
answered.
No point – Irrelevant answer/did not answer the question.

1. State one function of each of the following organelles: lysosome, Golgi apparatus, rough
endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, cell membrane.
2. Explain why mitochondrion is defined as the powerhouse of the cell.
3. Distinguish between the structure of plant and animal cells.
4. Using a table, compare the structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
5. Draw a diagram to show the structure of a cell membrane
