Introduction

What are some services that the Internet offers?

Services Provided by the Internet

1. Electronic Mail (Email)


- An electronic message that can be sent from
one computer user to another.
- Made possible by software called email
client. Examples include Microsoft Outlook
and Gmail.
2. Instant Messaging
- The instantaneous exchange of text, audio
or video messages between users, made
possible by instant messaging software.
- Examples of instant messaging software
include Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp
Messenger, etc.

3. World Wide Web (The Web)


- A collection of websites

4. File Transfer Protocol (FTP


- A set of rules and procedures that govern
the downloading and uploading of files on
the Internet.

5. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) – the


technology that makes it possible to have
voice transmitted in digital form over the
Internet.
- Makes it possible to have platforms like
Skype, Whatsapp, etc.

Requirements for Internet Access

1. A computer with:
2. Network Interface Card (NIC), also called a
network adaptor OR
3. Wireless Network Adaptor
4. Modem
5. Router and/or switch
6. Internet service account from an Internet
Service Provider (ISP)
Give the difference among modem, a router and a
switch.

Types of Internet Service

1. Dial-up
- Requires a landline and a modem to connect
- Cannot use the phone while connected to
the Internet
- Slowest way of connecting to the Internet
- Seldom used today

2. Broadband
- Uses a digital subscriber line (DSL) to
connect.
- Uses a phone to connect to the Internet, but
subscriber does not require a landline to
connect.
- Faster than dial-up
- Can use the phone while connected

3. Cable
- Uses a cable modem.
- Digital television sets can connect to the
Internet this way.

4. 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G-LTE

Internet Protocol
- a standard way in which different networks
are linked together

- the set of ru1es, sometimes known as a


protocol, for sending and receiving data over
the Internet, known as TCP/IP (Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet protocol).

- IP address – a unique number that identifies


each computer on a network, such as the
Internet. An example is 194.238.196.100. IP
address can be seen each time an email is
sent or a web page is visited.

- Internet address (also called a URL or


Uniform Resource Locator) – an address to a
website, such as www.youtube.com.
- Internet cache – a temporary folder on a
hard disk that stores web site addresses,
making it easier to access them again in the
future.

- Blog – a personal website for posting of text


and graphics.

- Vlog – a personal website for posting of


video content

- Podcast – a personal website for posting of


audio content

- Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) – a


text-based language for creating web pages

(advantages) of the Internet.
b. In the second column, list all of the
disadvantages of the Internet.

OR

Using Kahoot, create a crossword puzzle, game, or


quiz using all of the terms used in this lesson.
