Acquiring another language is an advantage, but what specific effects can it have on
people? Firstly, people's brains whose can speak a second language are proven to have
more neurons, which means they have a denser amount of "grey matter". These claims
are made by researchers who used MRI technology to observe differences in brain
activities between monolingual and bilingual people. Having more grey matter helps
one to learn skills faster as well as remember information better. As a result, knowing
a second language improves the learners' academic performance exponentially. The
system of nerve fibres that connects four lobes of the brain, the white matter, also
gains benefit from this. Better white matter integrity provides people with a brain that
functions better and lasts longer. Secondly, even the act of starting to learn a new
language can bring about great changes in one's life. People who learn how to use a
new language can also learn about its culture, its people and history. This greatly
boosts their sense of curiosity, general knowledge and awareness of others'
perspectives. In brief, learning a second language is beneficial to all learners, whether
it is for their academic journey or their personal betterment.
The oldest university in the world that is still in operation is said to be The University
of Bologna, Italy where teaching began around 1088 and later organised into a
university in the late 12th century. However, in Vietnam, the oldest university was
Temple of Literature - Imperial Academy which used to educate members of the
royalty from 1076 to 1779 before being moved to Hue in 1803. After many centuries,
Vietnam has continuously created more and more universities and institutions with
differences in organizations and purposes. At the present days, there are 3 main types
of university, based on funding, in Vietnam: Governmental, Private and International
Cooperating.
The most popular type of university in Vietnam would be Government funded ones.
These kinds of universities have their financial support from the state, which they
would use to pay for the facility, parts of students' fees and other investments. Because
most of its expenses have already been taken care by the public, the tuition fee for
students is more affordable compared to other kinds of university. In general, students
can apply to these state run universities via national entrance exams or abilities
evaluation exams, and the requirement scores are vary but often higher than most
Private universities. The number and range of majors are also very diverse in these
establishments, from natural sciences like Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry to social
sciences like Linguistics, Psychology or History. Well known Universities of this
category are USSH, HCMUS or UIT.
The opposite of the previous type of university is Private university. As the name
suggests, this kind of institution is funded mainly by non-government organizations or
the students themselves. Such foundation allows these establishments to be more
innovative and unconventional in their approach to education compared to state-owned
ones, sometimes introducing subjects that have not been taught outside of said
establishments. They typically do not require applicants to have high entrance exam
scores or sometimes only evaluate the study records. However, without the financial
support of the public, Private universities often charge their students much higher fees
than their counterpart, making applying for them a high-stake venture for middle class
families. Typical Private Universities are HUTECH, UEF or HSU.
