SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 42 annual Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival! Thank you so much for your
generosity and continued support of live music in Missoula. The School of Music is thrilled to
bring musicians of this caliber each year to work with our students and the many talented junior
high and high school bands visiting our campus. It’s so exciting to hear these groups making
music together and to witness their growth in such a short period of time. This is music
education at its very best! Thanks for helping us make it happen.
All best,
James Randall
Director, UM School of Music

BRAD LEALI - Saxophone
A native of Denver, Colorado, Brad received a
bachelor of arts degree in music education from the
University of North Texas in 1989 and upon
graduating, the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra
immediately recruited him. In his tenure with the
orchestra (1989-1994), Brad was the lead alto
saxophonist and the musical director. By invitation of
Frank Foster, Brad then joined the Count Basie
Orchestra in 1995 (later under Grover Mitchell, 2003).
In 2008, Brad joined the esteemed University of North
Texas (UNT) feculty as Professor of Jazz Saxophone
receiving the UNT Creative Impact Award in 2014 recognizing his
outstanding contributions as an educator.
His discography also includes Live in Europe (Brad Leali Quartet, 2004);
Brooklyn Soul Organization (also produced by Leali, 2004); the critically
acclaimed Maria Juanez (2006) and DA’s Time (Brad Leali-Claus Raible
Quartet, 2008) on the TCB label. He performed annually for many years as
part of the Kennedy Center Honors program and performed at President
Obama's inaugural celebration “We Are One.” While Brad continues
teaching at UNT, he frequently performs, tours, and records. He also
enjoys working as a guest artist, clinician, and adjudicator at other
educational institutions. Brad has had a long-time endorsement with
Keilwerth Saxophones and D’Addario Reed.ASHLEY SUMMERS - bass
Ashley a Canadian-born, Chicago-based artist
whose talents have brought her to stages all over
the world. Known for a lyrical style that is
punctuated by a sinewy impetuousness, Summers's
artistic perspective has a striking sincerity that is
both invigorating and nostalgic. Summers has
brought her "glorious tone that pours forth passion
and groove" (Jazzreview.com, 2010)to the North
Sea Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, and Jazz
a Vienne. She has also toured venues throughout
the US, from concert halls like the Kennedy Center
for the Arts to Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn and the
Lilypad in Boston. Recent performances have included special guests
Aaron Goldberg, Corey Christiansen, Leo Blanco, Seamus Blake and
Kenny Werner.
Recently, the title track on Summers's upcoming ears&eyes Records
release, ‘True North’, was recognized by the International Society for Jazz
Arrangers and Composers as the 2017 “Outstanding New Music
Composition" in the small ensemble category. The piece will be
performed by members of the Chuck Owen Big Band at ISJCA's annual
symposium in Tampa, FL, in May 2017.
In addition to her busy performance schedule, Summers is an in-demand
educator. For several years she served as director of IAJE Canada's
"Jazzmobile" project, which placed professional jazz musicians in
Canadian schools to motivate, educate and inspire young musicians. She
has also held interim faculty appointments at the Cleveland Institute of
Music, Ashland University, Kent State University and Morehead State
University in Kentucky.BEN MARKLEY - piano
Ben Markley, a jazz pianist, has
performed with Brian Lynch, Greg
Osby, Eddie Henderson, Terell
Stafford, George Garzone, and
John Fedchock. Markley’s latest
project along with special guest
trumpeter Terell Stafford celebrates
one of the more influential and beloved figures in jazz in Clockwise: The
Music of Cedar Walton (OA2 records). Performing iconic compositions
the album received great critical acclaim and was selected as one of the
best 4 star rated albums of 2017 by DownBeat magazine. Markley is active
as a composer, arranger and writer with many big band and vocal jazz
charts published through UNC Jazz Press. Markley's book A Practical
Approach to Improvisation - The David Hazeltine Method was published by
Jamey Aebersold Jazz in December of 2014. It documents David
Hazeltine’s process of creating etudes from transcriptions.
Markley is an active performer in the Denver-metropolitan area and
currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wyoming
where he directs and coaches the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, and combos.
He also teaches applied jazz piano, improvisation and is the director of the
UW Jazz Festival.Jared Hall - trumpet

Hall hails from Spokane, Washington and
has studied at Whitworth University, the
Indiana University and the University Of
Miami (DMA 2015). Hall is the winner of the

others.
Based in Seattle since 2015, Hall has performed with the Seattle Repertory
Jazz Orchestra, Symphony Tacoma, the 5th Avenue Theatre and many of
the region's outstanding ensembles. His quintet performed regularly at
Tula’s Jazz Club, the 2018 Gene Harris Jazz Festival, 2019 Puget Sound
Jazz Combo Festival, and 2021 Bellevue Jazz Festival. As a clinician, Hall
has served many universities, high school programs and jazz festivals
throughout the Pacific Northwest and has presented lectures at the
National Association of Music Educators (NAfME), Washington Music
Educators Association (WMEA) Conference and the Jazz Education
Network (JEN) Conference. The Piano Grip System: An Approach to
Learning Jazz Harmony, a book co-published by Hall and Whit Sidener in
June 2020, has been welcomed as an essential guide to learning jazz

As an addition to the educational aspects of this festival, we have created a way of
recognizing excellence from the daytime participants by honoring those people who have
been a driving force in the Montana jazz education field. Throughout the day, young
musicians have been selected for “Outstanding Soloist’ or "Best Section” Awards. You will
have the honor of hearing some of them perform on the evening concerts. Maybe
someday you'll be able to say, "I heard them when ..."
This year we will be honoring seven very special people. Our newest award is given on
behalf of two music education legends Chuck & Brooke Florence. Chuck & Brooke left
have taught hundreds of woodwind students over the years and many current music
educators. You can hear both of these folks all over the community and we are proud to
have this award named after these two wonderful educators. An outstanding saxophone
section will be recognized as the ‘Chuck & Brooke Florence Saxophone Section’
The award was given for the first time in 2020 on behalf of a music education legend, Fred
Nelson. Fred left his mark on thousands of musicians over the years and many current
music educators are former students of this amazing educator. An outstanding trumpet
section will be recognized as the ‘Fred Nelson Best Trumpet Section’
‘An annual award is given on behalf of the festival namesake, Buddy DeFranco. An
outstanding woodwind soloist will be recognized as the ‘Buddy DeFranco Outstanding
Soloist’. This award is sponsored by Yamaha and we are pleased to have the opportunity
to name this award after the internationally recognized jazz legend, Buddy DeFranco.
We once again will be honoring Earl Morgenroth and Lance Boyd. Earl spent his life
giving to the arts as well as supporting the UM Jazz Festival. Lance Boyd, Director of the
UM Jazz Program and Professor of Music for 43 years has left a music legacy impacting
thousands of students, community members and jazz lovers across the Northwest. The
festival, university and community are honored to have awards in the names of these
generous and giving individuals.
We will also recognize pianist Jodi Marshall. For over 60 years, Jodi performed with some
of the best entertainers in Los Angeles and throughout the country including with Capital
Records and MGM and we were blessed to have this musical treasure in our community.
To say the Missoula community would not be the same without having Don & Pat
Simmons a part of it would be a profound understatement. We are so fortunate that these
wonderful Midwestern people came to help make a difference in our community.
A1971 graduate of the University of Montana, Larry Gookin is considered one of the finest,
wind band conductors in the country. Also, an exceptional trombonist, Larry has
conducted honor groups throughout the world and his name is synonymous with
educational integrity, class and exceptionality. We are lucky to call Professor Gookin ‘one
of ours’.Festival Sponsors
