An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase made up of numbers, variables, and operations without an equals sign. Key components include constants, variables, coefficients, terms, and operators, each defined with examples. The document also provides practice questions to identify these parts in given expressions.

Study Guide: Parts of an Algebraic Expression

What is an Algebraic Expression?

An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that contains numbers, variables, and operations
but no equals sign.

Parts of an Algebraic Expression:

1. Constant - A number that does not change (has no variable).

Example: In 3x + 5, the constant is 5.

2. Variable - A letter that represents an unknown number.

Example: In 2y + 7, the variable is y.

3. Coefficient - A number that is multiplied by a variable.

Example: In 4x, the coefficient is 4.

4. Term - A single number, variable, or a combination of both.

Example: In 5x - 2y + 7, the terms are 5x, -2y, and 7.

5. Operator - The symbols that show operations: +, -, ×, ÷.

Example: In 3x + 4, the operator is +.

Example: Identify the Parts

For the expression: 6x^2 - 3x + 8
- Constant: 8
- Variables: x
- Coefficients: 6 (for x^2), -3 (for x)
- Terms: 6x^2, -3x, 8
- Operators: -, +

Practice Questions:
1. Identify the constant, variable, coefficient, terms, and operators in:
5y^2 - 2y + 9

2. What is the coefficient of x in 7x - 4?

3. How many terms are in the expression 3a^2 - 5a + 6b - 2?

4. Write an algebraic expression with three terms, using the variable m.
