2. PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER ASSEMBLY - DESCRIPTION
SUBTASK 35-35-52-870-003-A01
A. General Description
(1) The POCA is a self-contained, regulated, high-pressured oxygen source that
supplies oxygen (per Military Specification MIL-PRF-27210, Type I) to crew
members and/or passengers. Each POCA consists of a cylinder on which a
manually operated regulator is installed (Refer to Fig. 3).
SUBTASK 35-35-52-870-004-A01
B. Cylinder
(1) Cylinders have a thin walled seamless aluminum alloy liner (6061-T6) reinforced by
carbon fiber in epoxy resin base wrap, with S-glass in epoxy resin overwrap, and
polyurethane top coating. Cylinders identified as 4, 7, or 11 cu. ft. have a rated
service pressure of 1850 psig (12.76 MPa). (Refer to Fig. 2) for cylinder capacity.
The cylinder is qualified to meet Department of Transportation (DOT) and Canadian
Transport Commission (CTC) requirements.
SUBTASK 35-35-52-870-005-A01
C. Oxygen Regulator Assembly
(1) The regulator is a single inlet device that has a low pressure outlet assembly, low
pressure safety relief valve, high pressure safety valve, and cylinder refill fitting.
The regulator is configured with a high-pressure gauge to monitor oxygen pressure
in the attached cylinder assembly during regulator operation or cylinder refilling.
(2) The regulator has a flow switching device that allows a user to manually control
oxygen flow to a passenger mask. High pressure oxygen is always applied to the
high pressure section of the regulator. When the on/off knob is turned to place the
regulator in one of two flow positions (2 lpm or 4 lpm), high pressure oxygen in
the cylinder is reduced to low-pressure oxygen and supplied at the low-pressure
outlet of the regulator.

3. PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER ASSEMBLY - OPERATION
A. General
All 3552 Series POCA’s may be configured with a carrying harness. The POCA is
typically mounted in the aircraft using two optional Bracket Assembly Sets. Refer to
Paragraph 3.F. for a brief description and maintenance manual references for the Bracket
Assembly Sets.
(1) The 3552 Series POCA’s are made of two assemblies: a high pressure cylinder
(item 500, (Refer to FIG. 2 thru , FIG. 4, ) and a regulator assembly (400, , FIG.
2, thru FIG. 4)). The cylinder is a composite type and stores the high-pressure
oxygen supplied to the regulator assembly. The regulator assemblies are manually
operated by an on/off knob and reduce the oxygen pressure to suitable levels for
use with the constant flow oxygen masks. Some configurations include breathing
mask assemblies stored in fastener mounted storage bags.
SUBTASK 35-35-52-870-006-A01
B. Cylinder Assembly
(1) The cylinder is a US Department of Transportation (DOT) & Transport Canada (TC)
rated pressure vessel that holds oxygen gas at a nominal working pressure of 1800
- 1850 psig (12.4 - 12.8 MPa). The cylinder is made of a thin walled seamless
aluminum alloy liner (6061-T6) reinforced by carbon fiber in epoxy resin base wrap,
with S-glass in epoxy resin overwrap, and polyurethane top coating.
(2) Information on the cylinder service life and the hydrostatic test frequency
requirements can be found in the Refer to chapter INSPECTION/CHECK, (Refer to
Table 5003) (Cylinder Inspection Frequency).
SUBTASK 35-35-52-870-007-A01
C. Regulator Assembly
(1) The regulator reduces high-pressure oxygen stored in the cylinder to a lower
pressure suitable for use with constant flow-type mask assemblies. The On/Off
control knob allows the user to open the On/Off valve and select the desired flow
setting. The knob synchronizes the position of an orifice indexing assembly with
the low pressure outlet. A gear on the knob mates with a gear attached to the
orifice indexing assembly. An indication of the flow appears in a window beneath
the low pressure outlet fitting assembly. Rotating the knob counterclockwise until a
flow indication appears in the window opens the valve and provides the indicated
flow (of either 2 lpm or 4 lpm) from the outlet. A mechanical detent is felt when the
POCA is adjusted to either flow setting. There is a mechanical stop at the 4 lpm
flow position in addition to the detent.

CAUTION : THE APPLICATION OF TOO HIGH A TORQUE TO THE POCA KNOB CAN
STOP THE FLOW OF OXYGEN COMPLETELY, WHICH CAN CAUSE IN-
JURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
SUBTASK 35-35-52-870-008-A01
D. Regulator Components
(1) The following components are included in the regulator assembly.
(a) Filler Valve ( (Refer to Fig. 4), 1)
1 The filler valve is used to fill the cylinder with high-pressure oxygen. The
On/Off knob must be in the closed position (finger tight) before allowing
oxygen to flow into the cylinder. High-pressure oxygen applied to the
filler valve inlet forces the valve core open and flows through porting into
the oxygen cylinder. When high-pressure oxygen is removed from the
filler valve assembly the valve core closes and stops the flow of oxygen.
(b) Relief Valve ( (Refer to Fig. 4), 12)
1 The relief valve protects the orifice from over-pressure. The relief valve
assembly will open and close as needed and is continuously available
for over-pressure conditions. Pressure greater than a specified value
at the orifice will force the poppet away from the seat in the regulator
body, allowing oxygen to be vented through an opening.
(c) Safety Outlet
1 The safety plug ( (Refer to Fig. 4), 13) and safety disc (14) are installed
in the regulator body to protect the cylinder from an over-pressure
condition. The location of the safety outlet in the valve body permits
continuous operation so that at all times, the cylinder is protected.

2 The safety disc will rupture if the pressure inside a cylinder is 2775 -
3083 psig (19.13 - 21.26 MPa). If the safety disc releases pressure
from inside the cylinder, the safety disc must be replaced before the
cylinder is ready for operation or is ready for the charging mode.
(d) Low Pressure Outlet Fitting Assembly ( (Refer to Fig. 4), 10)
1 The low pressure outlet fitting assembly is used to provide flow of
oxygen to a downstream component, typically a constant flow oxygen
mask.
(e) Cylinder Pressure Gauge ( (Refer to FIG. 2), 190)
1 The cylinder gauge provides a reading of oxygen pressure within the
cylinder.

NOTE : Service Bulletin 3552-35-01 Rev. Original cancelled and replaced SIL-35-63
Rev. Original.
(1) Summary
(a) The 3552 Series POCA originally included a sling strap (P/N 10013592) that
is slightly shorter than the sling straps used on most existing portable oxygen
units. Operators requested that the POCA be equipped with a harness equal
in length to the existing units in order to make training and familiarization
easier. AVOX recommends the replacement of sling strap P/N 10013592
with harness P/N 10014024.

(a) Aircraft
1 At the time of the Service Bulletin the P/N 3552 Series POCA was used
only on Airbus aircraft, principally the Airbus 340.
(b) This modification started on the production line with S/N P06070981.
(3) Determine whether or not any action is necessary.
(a) On the POCA Cylinder, find Identification Label P/N 10013676 or Amendment
Label P/N 806509-01. Look for the letter A on the amendment block on
either label.
(b) If an A appears on the cylinder, no further action is necessary ( (Refer to Fig.
16001) for label identification.) If an A does not appear on the cylinder, AVOX
recommends that you use Upgrade Kit 806507-01 to replace sling strap P/N
10013592 with harness P/N 10014024 on or before the next scheduled
overhaul of the POCA or September 2016 whichever comes first. Refer to
paragraphs 1.F.(4) thru 1.F.(5).

G. Verify and Adjust, if necessary, flow rates of POCAs (Incorporation of SB 3552-35-02)
The flow rates on some 3552 Series POCAs were inadvertently set approximately 7%
below the required values. Although the existing flow rates are not considered to be a
significant physiological risk, it is necessary to adjust the flow rates to return the units
to conformity to the regulatory standard.
AVOX Systems will re-adjust the units in coordination with the operator utilizing the
POCAs. AVOX Systems has coordinated this modification with Virgin Atlantic Airways in
order to implement it quickly, without adverse impact on aircraft availability, and without
impact on aircraft configuration, including aircraft documentation.
(1) Effectivity
(a) At the time of the Service Bulletin, the P/N 3552 Series POCA was used only
on Airbus A340- 600 aircraft with MSN 753, MSN 764, MSN 765 operated by
Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited. No other units are known to be in operation.
(b) This modification started on the production line with S/N P06090986.
(c) This modification also applies to all units held in stores for service on affected
aircraft.

H. Proper Use of the Regulator On-Off Knob on P/N 3552 Series POCAs (Incorporating
SIL-35-102)
Some previous heavy weight portable oxygen units have proportional valves that
can provide a higher flow rate the more the regulator on-off knob is turned. The new
lightweight POCA does not have a proportional valve. At this time there are only two flow
rates. The POCA will flow at 2 lpm when at the detent with the "2" in the window and
the POCA will flow at 4 lpm when at the detent with the "4" in the window. There is a
mechanical stop at the 4 liter position in addition to the detent. If a high torque is used to
turn the knob past the setting of "4", the flow of oxygen can stop.
(1) Effectivity
(a) Any aircraft with a P/N 3552 Series POCA installed is affected.
(b) All P/N 3552 Series POCAs in spares storage or in a maintenance shop
wherever the knob will be operated are affected.
(2) Accomplishment
(a) AVOX recommends that every person who may operate a POCA should
be trained to properly turn the knob.
1 Use your fingers to turn the knob, not your hand (Refer to Fig. 16005)).

2 Do not force the knob past the stop at the 4 lpm setting. Do not use the
hand or fist to turn the knob (Refer to Fig. 16005). If you try to turn the
knob past the detent at 4 lpm, you can damage the POCA and cause
injury to a person who is breathing with the POCA. Trying to turn the
knob past the detent at 4 lpm will not provide a higher flow, but may
stop the flow of oxygen completely. Attempting to turn the knob past the
4 lpm position by applying force to the knob may damage the regulator
and stop the flow of oxygen. Once damaged, the knob will readily go
past the "4" position and flow will stop. Damaged regulators should be
serviced by an authorized service center.
