• Understanding AI:
Technical understanding
This involves understanding the basic principles of how AI works. It includes knowledge of how AI
systems perceive the world, collect and process data, and make decisions or recommendations.
It's about understanding the capabilities of AI, such as pattern recognition, machine learning, and
natural language processing, as well as its limitations.
Core Principles of AI:
• Machine Learning: AI systems can learn from data without explicit programming, identifying patterns
and making predictions.
• Deep Learning: A subset of machine learning using artificial neural networks with multiple layers to
analyze complex data.
• Natural Language Processing (NLP): Enables machines to understand, interpret, and generate human
language.
• Computer Vision: Allows machines to "see" and interpret images and videos.
• Robotics: AI plays a crucial role in designing and controlling robots for various tasks.
Implications of AI:
• Ethical Considerations:
AI systems can perpetuate biases present in training data, raising concerns about fairness, transparency,
and accountability.
• Job Displacement:
Automation driven by AI could lead to job losses in certain sectors, requiring workforce adaptation and
reskilling.
• Economic Impact:
AI can revolutionize industries, creating new business models and opportunities, but also potentially
exacerbating inequalities.
• Social Impact:
AI can impact areas like healthcare, education, transportation, and entertainment, offering both benefits
and challenges.
Real-World Applications of AI:
• Healthcare: AI is used for medical diagnosis, drug discovery, personalized treatments, and robotic
surgery.
• Transportation: AI powers self-driving cars, optimizes traffic flow, and enhances logistics.
• Finance: AI is used for fraud detection, algorithmic trading, and risk assessment.
• Manufacturing: AI enables automation, predictive maintenance, and quality control.
• Customer Service: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants provide 24/7 support.
• Education: AI can personalize learning experiences, assess student performance, and automate tasks.
• Entertainment: AI is used for content recommendation, music generation, and virtual reality
experiences.
• Agriculture: AI can optimize crop yields, monitor livestock, and predict weather patterns.
• Security: AI is used for surveillance, threat detection, and cybersecurity.
• Environmental Science: AI can be used for climate modeling, pollution monitoring, and resource
management.

Societal impacts of artificial intelligence: Ethical, legal, and governance issues

Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly changing the way we work and the way we live. The emergence of
ChatGPT has thrust AI, especially Generative AI, into the spotlight. The societal impact of AI is on most
people's minds. This article presents several research projects on how AI impacts work and society.
Three research works are discussed in this article. The first study develops a theoretical framework
structuring the legal and ethical objectives that are needed and the means to achieve them. The second
study concentrates on bias and discrimination issues embedded in AI applications. It focuses on enhancing
the collaboration between AI users and AI systems to alleviate bias and discrimination issues. The third
study focuses on the governance of AI, and the study will design and develop an integrated AI governance
framework to help guide the design and development of AI applications and facilitate the evolutions and
revolutions of ethical AI systems.

How artificial intelligence is helping make informed decisions

1. Fighting wildfires:
The World Meteorological Organization predicted that climate change will lead to a 30% increase in
the number of extreme fires by 2050, rising to a 50% increase by the end of the century.
2. Targeting the right customers:
In tough economic times, it’s critical that marketing efforts reach the people most likely to buy
products if businesses are to survive. Getting it wrong can be an expensive mistake. Globally, businesses
spent over $567 billion in 2022 on digital advertizing.
3. Helping firefighters see through smoke:
When a fire crew arrives at a burning building, how do they decide where to go? Handheld thermal
imaging cameras have their limitations, but in 2022 the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service trialled an AI-
based system which helps firefighters find trapped people faster.
4. Detecting disease:
In the health sector, AI is having a big impact. Indeed, by 2026, two-thirds of medical imaging processes
are expected to use AI to detect diseases and guide treatment.

• AI innovations currently working to shape the global business landscape and prompt
continued tech progress
1. Generative AI:
Often hailed as an AI revolution, Gen AI is a type of AI that is capable of generating text, images, videos
or other data using generative models. Often created in response to prompts, the technology is often
developed to handle tasks that are unique to an individual business.
2. AI-Powered Drug Discovery:
AI can be used within the healthcare sector to help researchers analyse large amounts of data and
generate insights that can speed up the drug discovery process.
3. Financial Services:
Within the financial services landscape, AI has been posited as a solution to issues of security and
optimization of services. Its ability to protect against fraud, in addition to processing documents, has led
the technology to become a valuable tool within the global financial landscape.
4. Autonomous Vehicles
The EV market is continually turning to AI in order to boost its sales, with autonomous vehicles (AVs)
seeking to cement themselves as the future of cars. Through AI, AVs can interpret information that helps
them perceive their surroundings, including recognizing obstacles, traffic signals and navigating complex
environments.
5. Agriculture:
AI has a range of applications within the agriculture sector, including making weather predictions,
sustainability monitoring and using data in connection with satellite and drone photography. In fact,
Forbes even predicted in 2024 that The AI in Agriculture Market is projected to grow from US$1.7bn in
2023 to US$4.7bn by 2028.
6. AI-Enhanced Cybersecurity:
Helping to identify vulnerabilities across the cyber threat landscape, AI can be harnessed to defend
against cybercriminals and threat activities such as malware. Although hotly debated, AI-powered risk
analysis can produce incident summaries for high-fidelity alerts and automate incident responses. AI is
able to integrate into an existing system and monitor it for potential threats, operating 24/7 to thwart any
attempts.

Question 2: Story-based Assignment

• A Day with My AI Assistant
It was morning, and before I could open my eyes, my AI assistant had analyzed trending scientific,
Islamic, medical, and social topics from around the world. When I woke up, she greeted me and said:
“Good morning! Today’s truth-based insights are: a new discovery in quantum physics, a debated
interpretation in Islamic history, a breakthrough in cancer research, and a major social conflict being
discussed globally.”
She didn’t just give me the headlines but a summary of each topic in simple language, along with
credible references. That was exactly what I needed — not just to learn, but to share with others and help
them understand right from wrong in today’s world.
Then I asked, “AI, what do people think about new medical research in Pakistan?”
He replied, “This is a sentiment analysis based on news and social media: 60% positive, 30% ignorant,
and 10% misinformation being spread. Would you like to help me develop a counterargument to explain?”
“Absolutely,” I said.
In seconds, he had created a visual slide, facts, and a short audio message that I could send to my
friends, students, and social groups.
Later that day, I said to my assistant, “One day I want to travel the world, visit every culture, and discover
the true history.”
He replied: “Based on your interests, here is a list of places with deep cultural, historical, and spiritual
significance — including Islamic landmarks, ancient scientific centers, and museums where the truth is
hidden behind the artifacts. I’ve also highlighted places where there are ongoing social conflicts so you
can observe and understand the perspective.”
I smiled. This assistant wasn't just smart - it was part of my mission to discover, learn, and guide others
toward the truth.
