“When are you coming here again to tell us about disaster prevention in our societies?”, posed by
a resident, was a memorable question that resonated in my mind during my participation in a Focus
Group Discussion (FGD) with district societies in Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi,
Indonesia, to discuss a potential tsunami disaster occurred there. They experienced the trauma of the
Palu-Donggala disaster with 7.4 Mw in 2018 and they were afraid that the same disaster would
happen near them. Although the location is quite far from the destructive earthquake damage, their
disaster awareness can arise because they know the damage depriving life and its environment.
This disaster event brought three types of disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and liquefaction
where liquefaction is a new one for them. This watery soil disaster has created confusion for the
community regarding what to do and where they must evacuate themselves. In total, thousands of
people have been killed and injured, and more than five thousand people outside Palu-Donggala
have become refugees.
I also found fears among tourists during the surveys in Lombok, a small island recreation area.
There is a potential tsunami disaster occurring there, even though the tsunami inundation prediction
could reach almost the entire island area, there are no suitable evacuation routes. My experiences as
a Junior Disaster Analyst showed me that disaster prevention is essential for our societies.
Not only Sulawesi-Lombok Province but also Jakarta Region, the country’s capital, also experienced
a disaster, flooding. There are three types of floods at the same time, namely fluvial floods due to
overflowing rivers because of extreme rain falling upstream, pluvial floods which occur due to
extreme rainfall in the central area of the capital worsened by land subsidence, and coastal floods
due to rising sea levels in coast of the capital.

Jakarta has installed numerous structural countermeasures to prevent floods there. There are canals
at the west and east in northern Jakarta in the coast area, several floodgates, and the biggest
structural mitigation is the Great Garuda Sea Wall (GGSW) along Jakarta Bay. While numerous
countermeasures have been implemented, there are also breaks and failures when floods come so
assessing their effectiveness remains an important complex challenge.
Motivated by the need for enhanced disaster mitigation, I have decided to embark on a journey as a
disaster researcher. This journey can be improved by joining at Environmental and Energy
Technologies International Course with my research evaluating the Great Garuda Sea Wall Project,
as a flood countermeasure in Jakarta, under the supervision of Professor Taniguchi Kenji to be able,
at least, meaningfully contributing insights to the government for informing decision-making and
prioritization.
Recognizing the limitations of my future master’s degree focusing solely on the fluvial-coastal
flood, I aspire to broaden the scope of my research by integrating the impact of land subsidence that
worsens floods in my doctoral degree planning in the future, hopefully. I intend to contribute to
flood disaster mitigation research by also conducting research and studies for my country and its
vulnerable communities.
As a disaster analyst, expanding the analysis of disaster is imperative. We cannot prioritize one
disaster over another; therefore, comprehensive analyses of various disasters must be conducted.
Given the opportunity to delve deeper into research, I am eager to enhance the analysis of
multi-hazard scenarios, encompassing tsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes, liquefaction, and more. The
countermeasures must be provided not only on structural approaches but also on non-structural
approaches. I realize that societal disaster awareness from societies in Indonesia must be improved
by enhancing the community's capacity to respond to disasters effectively. So, the role of becoming
an expert disaster analyst, serving either as a researcher or a consultant, would enable me to advise
my government on informed decision-making strategies to proactively prevent and mitigate
disasters. In addition, my dream involves becoming a lecturer at my university. During the alumni
meeting, I noticed a shortage of instructors in my field, meteorology, so I aspire to contribute as a
lecturer on my previous campus.
